Steelers Treating Justin Fields Unfairly in QB Situation with Russell Wilson? | Offensive Leadership

Спорт

The Pittsburgh Steelers are putting Russell Wilson as their top quarterback with Justin Fields behind him start training camp. But is that fair to Fields and his development? Christopher Carter and Mark Kaboly tackle that question and what that means for how the Steelers' quarterback depth chart will shake out in training camp, the 2024 season, and if Fields can turn into the future for the team.
Also, is Wilson the right leader to get the Steelers' offense back on track? Chris and Mark explore beyond just Wilson's football skills and look at how his personality could work with a young offense that includes George Pickens, Pat Freiermuth and Najee Harris. Could he be the right fit to reset offensive leadership for the Steelers?

When Russ was a rookie, Matt Flynn was presumed to be QB1, and Russ was presumed to be the backup. Russ went out and EARNED the starting position over Matt Flynn, and he justified it by becoming an all-pro. Fields wasn’t brought to Pittsburgh to be the starter, but if he’s good enough to do that, let him prove it. He’s a grown man, and he needs to EARN what he gets. If he’s as good as people think he is, he can earn the starting position. But about him being given a chance, he was given that when the Steelers traded for him. To Russ’s haters, the only thing “fair” would be for the Steelers to treat Russ like sh!t. Every time Fields goes into practice, he receives a fair chance, but a backup is a backup. Why do people act like the Steelers owe him something? He isn’t owed anything besides a paycheck for the work he is doing. He’s not owed a crack at the starting position just because he’s younger and presumably more athletic (barely). He’s not owed a chance to start just because certain members of the media and public like him better than they like Russ. He isn’t owed a chance to start just because he and Russ are both new to the Steelers organization. The Steelers TARGETED Russ, and if not for Kenny Pickett self-destructing, the Steelers would’ve had no interest in Fields. In fact, the Bears had no interest in trading Fields to Pittsburgh until AFTER Russ signed there, and there’s a strategic reason for that. He’s also not owed a chance to start just because SOME people think he didn’t get a fair shake in Chicago. Russ clearly didn’t get a fair shake in Denver, and unlike Fields, Russ has a long track record of success! People need to quit trying to put Russ out to pasture! He doesn’t deserve this disrespect. Plus, Fields isn’t another Lamar Jackson. He’s more like Cam Newton. And I’ll keep it a buck: LJ wouldn’t beat out Russ in a training camp competition either. People will probably laugh at that because of the individual success LJ has had, but on an even playing field, with both getting #1 reps, Russ would beat him out with his passing ability. Receivers LOVE Russ because he is insanely accurate, has great velocity, and has a soft touch. Bring up Russ missing open receivers and I’ll ask where those receivers are now. They barely have jobs because they were lazy or repeatedly ran the wrong routes. I’ll also remind you that former and current Seahawks receivers like Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate, Jermaine Kearse, Sidney Rice, Paul Richardson, Brandon Marshall, David Moore, Ben Obomanu, Jimmy Graham, Josh Gordon, Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, never got missed! Antonio Brown, one of the greatest, wanted to play with Russ, as did D’Andre Hopkins. They all sang Russ’s praises and still do. People need to quit bashing Russ, and they need to quit assuming he isn’t still athletic. He can still move well enough to give his team 400-500 yards in a season, and he’s a superior passer to LJ and Fields.

Mark Kaboly is wrong.... Steelers were interested in Justin Fields first and all along. Chicago was trying to act as if they were not going to pick up a QB in the 1st round and was asking too much for Fields. The only reason why Russell Wilson got picked up is because we were able to get him at a ridiculously low price. Nobody was interested in RW when we picked him up. Only interview he had was the Giants. That should speak volumes. We only got him because he was super cheap. Second, let's stop with all of these accolades you guys keep hyping and pumping up about Russell Wilson. If he were so great, two HOF coaches would not have dumped him. We are wasting time hyping up Russell as if we some how are going to resurrect his 2018 season. Finally let me tell you why starting RW is a poor business decision. You start RW and he plays ok maybe to a 5-4 start for the season and goes down with an injury or because the fans are getting tired of mediocracy. Do you really want Justin Fields coming in mid-season cold and with out timing and chemistry to start a 8 game stretch of the hardest schedule in the NFL? Will he get a fair assessment of whether we should keep him or not during that 8 game stretch? Let's say we go 4-4, was that enough to want to resign, keep and invest in JF for the future? On the other hand, start Justin and bench RW. Let Justin play to keep his job and his future with the franchise. Let him build team chemistry and timing through the first half of the season. If he plays poorly and has to be benched, then you know what you got. Behind him on the bench is RW who is a veteran and would be better suited to come in mid-season to salvage it even at the odds we face in the second half of the season. Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF), RW has enough resume for us to know who he is at this point of his career. We need to find out who JF is from our own perspective and not Chicago's. The best hope for the future of this franchise and its QB position is to start Justin Fields. It should be his team to lose, not the other way around.

I don't understand how people can say Mason was the best QB. He lost his job to a practice squad QB, he never surplanted any QB on the depth chart, he was always #2 or #3. You saw 3 games where the team played well and say he is better in a void. They had a different OC, the WRs got their acts together and started playing for the team (low effort plays), and there was more pressure on the offense in terms of game script due to not having any safeties or linebackers. Kenny and Mason basically played on 2 different teams. The fact that you say Mason was the best QB shows how shortsighted you are. Neither of them were great, Mason got a lucky streak.

I guess you thought critically and surmised that your statement was based on opinion and facts do not back your argument. Mason had 3 good games in his tenure and suddenly he was the best QB on the roster. You ignore the fact that Kenny played injured, ignored the fact that Kenny had Canada as OC and Rudolph had Faulkner. Kenny had a gutted defense that gave up too many points because they were injured, Mason had a team where the defense was healthier; Kenny played with an O Line that was struggling, Mason played with an O Line that was above middle of the pack. Kenny had WRs who were dropping balls and putting no effort into the play, Mason got the WRs after Tomlin got them back in Line and they started playing team ball; Kenny got Najee with a Liz-Frank injury, Mason got Najee as he recovered. They played basically on 2 different offenses but somehow Mason is the better QB because they won those 3 games....it has nothing to do with the O Line, defense, running game, coordinators or any other aspect. Mason won, therefor he is the best QB. Glad your critical thinking is so one tracked....way to make an ass of yourself kid. As you were...

Look at how awesome Justin played last season after sitting on the sidelines and taking advantage of the opportunity to get mentally sharpened and yet more unstoppable. He gets a chance to learn how to win Superbowls playing real football with a real football team. Justin will become the best second string quarterback because in order to become a great leader you have to be a great follower. Make sure Russell Wilson is the MVP that way Justin can kill two birds with one stone. By sitting on the sidelines Justin will learn how to take the game into the future because Justin is a one man offense. But Justin has to learn how to keep the defense honest.

I think this is a wise move. Fields should sit behind Wilson unless there is some crazy breakout in training camp and preseason games. He has some areas he needs to develop...consistency and going through progressions as he reads a defense. These are things he can learn as the #2 instead of spending all of his time prepping for gameday. We get him for 1 year, he isnt a starter so that should mean a modest contract when we sign him to a longer contract. Russ probably has the higher floor whereas Justin probably has the higher ceiling. We are trying to win playoffs so experience and consistency are more important. Again, the perfect situation for Fields....develop, no pressure, a veteran to learn behind, an experienced OC, a team that is actually building a complete team (think Khalil Mack, Roquan Smith, no WRs, mediocre RB) as opposed to the Steelers who have invested in an O line, WRs, 2 solid RBs, good TEs, and has a defense so the QB doesnt have to score 30 to win.

Well i see a superbowl all day. There are very few qb's that have the college numbers that fields has. He beat out a lot of qb's by the numbers. The man has not been given a chance to be who he could be. He got picked by a funky team like Chicago. He was so good in college and he just lost out by going to a $#%&# team.
