Steel Rails - The Petersens (LIVE)
This is one of our favorite bluegrass songs of all time! Louisa Branscomb wrote "Steel Rails" when she was 20 and it has been recorded by both Alison Krauss and John Denver. We performed this song years ago when Emmett first joined our group and worked it back up because so many of you requested it in the comments!
Like many bluegrass songs, the lyrics get passed down by ear and we're so grateful Louisa has since got in touch to share the correct lyrics (so you may notice different words in the captions!) :)

This is our first video with the blond dobro Emmett acquired in early 2021. It's a Byrl with a deeper sound, perfect for hard-driving bluegrass songs. His original mahogany Scheerhorn isn't going anywhere, it's just more suited to melodic, pretty songs. We also bought Emmett a travel dobro for Christmas so he doesn't have to put his in the belly of an airplane when we're on tour. A man can never have too many dobros, right?
He tunes the Scheerhorn to G, and the Byrl to D.

►LYRICS - Steel Rails
Steel rails, chasin' sunshine around the bend
Windin' through the trees like a ribbon in the wind
I don't mind not knowin' what lies down the track
'Cause I'm lookin' out ahead to keep my mind from turnin' back
It's not the first time I've found myself alone at dawn
If I really had you once then I'd have you when I'm gone
The whistle blowin', blowin' lonesome in my mind
Callin' me along that never-endin' metal line
Steel rails, chasin' sunshine around the bend
Windin' through the trees like a ribbon in the wind
I don't mind not knowin' what lies down the track
'Cause I'm lookin' out ahead to keep my mind from turnin' back
The sun is shining through the open boxcar door
Blinding my mind to the things I've known before
I've lost count of the hours, days and time
The rhythm of the rails keeps the motion in my mind
Steel rails, chasin' sunshine around the bend
Windin' through the trees like a ribbon in the wind
I don't mind not knowin' what lies down the track
'Cause I'm lookin' out ahead to keep my mind from turnin' back [x2]
'Cause I'm lookin' out ahead to keep my mind from turnin' back

I rate all the Petersons A+ but there is just something magical when Katie sings the lead. The BEST voice in Branson by far.
If anyone has any doubts about just how good The Petersens are, compare this with with the Alison Krauss version. Alison is (in my view) one of the best female singers of all time. The Petersens are well up there in that league! Superb.

You mention that they are as genuine in person as they appear on video. And yet I already knew that, their genuineness comes straight through the screen and the speakers. But I’ll absolutely have to see them live. Another artist whose genuineness comes across undiluted on a screen and through speakers is Tommy Emmanuel and I’ve had the good fortune to see him live many times and to chat with him after a show. I’d love to meet the Petersens after a show. I told Tommy that his music makes me want to be a better man and it’s the same with the Petersens.

There’s just nothing like watching Katie smile when she sings. I think it could melt the meanest heart. The first time I ever saw the Petersens sing, I think it was the very first thing I noticed. This song is one of my favorites, specifically because of her. 😀
It's the little 'accidentals', accents, vocal grace notes here and there that Katie does which so beautifully capture Ms. Krauss best recordings of this. When someone with great talent covers a song from someone else with great talent then BOTH sets of gifts come thhrough at the same time. It' s hard to put this into words. That is no easy accomplishment to pull off. But the proof is when I can feel the sound of Katie's voice and recall her singing 'California' while at the same time I can hear/feel Allison's inflection in the lyrics of this song. It's hard to explain. but I think this is what is meant when someone might say 'she made the song her own'. I only hope Alison krauss had a chance to watch this. I bet she would love it.

The Petersens are quite an assembly of talent, and the addition of Emmett on dobro puts this group over the top. Years ago I saw Alison Krauss with Jerry Douglas on dobro and it was quite a show. Some day I plan to see this amazing family in person.
I was at karaoke last evening and met a young lady about Miss Juliannes age. I asked if she would sing with me sometime and suggested a bluegrass tune. She had no idea what that is, her exact words. I was thinking about how to tell here what Bluegrass music sounds like. What I should have done is to tell her to listen to any Petersons song. Everything you do has a Bluegrass flavour, joy and musicality.
Mama hiding behind her bass was priceless. Thank you.
This remains one of my favorite Petersen bluegrass songs. It's by far the best arrangement and performance of this popular bluegrass tune.
A new Petersens drop is like seeing the sun after a week long rainstorm, brings a smile to your face and warms you up.☀️😁
I think Petersens videos are just me planning my vacation for the next year. Every spot, I want to go for a week or more.
Hey Petersens... I JUST discovered your group for the first time two nights ago after THIS video popped up on my "recommended for you" KZread list. As a lifetime lover of trains, it was the title of the song which drew me in to watching it. As a musician of more than 55 years, it was the quality of your video which caused me to search out more of your music. I watched close to a dozen of your videos the other night and enjoyed every one of them VERY much! I've liked the sound of bluegrass music ever since being introduced to it as a child while watching The Andy Griffith Show on TV back in the early 1960s. I'm cursed with being a bit of a perfectionist, so compliments don't often flow freely from me to others. However, there are several things I'd like to mention which impressed me very much with regard to your music videos. First of all, whoever does your audio recording is someone you should DEFINITELY hold on to! The sound and balance of all of your videos would be impressive if recorded inside a studio, but the fact that so many of them are recorded live and outdoors in nature... well, let me just say I spent close to an hour watching your singers' mouths and the fingers playing the instruments VERY closely because I kept thinking your videos HAD to have been dubbed to a prerecorded track... THAT'S how GOOD they are! I also must compliment your natural talents, from the quality of sounds produced on the instruments you all play, to the pleasing vocals which come forth from the mouths of ALL of your singers. And, last but not least, the WONDERFUL, nearly ever-present smiles on the faces of your fiddle and banjo players (sorry, but I haven't yet learned your names) and the way you move to your music -- as well as your choice of clothing and your wholesome appearance -- well... let me just say that I can't compliment you all enough for your MANY jobs WELL DONE! It's a real pleasure watching such entertaining videos on KZread and I hope there will be many more coming down the line sometime soon. You should all be extremely proud of the music you're creating. And to your Mom... keep those tasteful and musical bass lines a coming! :-) Best wishes to all of you from your newest fan, Mark.

@Mark Rabenold They sound mix live on all their videos by moving closer or further away from the mics! Truly spectacular!! I know the lead singer/fiddle player in this video is named Katie and she also has her own channel and writes her own music! :) Ellen is the gal on Banjo and her and her husband have a channel. Julianne is the young lady on the farthest left in this video. I know one of the guys is named Emmit and I think he is the Dobro player. Choo choo!! Goin' in the right direction. Ridin' the rails with y'all. That's the long and the short of it. Nobody left behind in that number!

Make sure you always have a pair of clean, dry socks.
This song is right in your wheel house! Loved it! And Emmett can never have too many dobroes. I think they line up patiently in the dobro store hoping that one day he will pick them.
I really love how all of your vocals harmonized in this. I dont know what it is, but it just sounds different, and I'm loving it!
It's amazing, every song they play sounds incredible.
As a breath of fresh air, a drink of cool spring water, and the fragrance of a field of wild flowers the Petersen’s have delivered a delightful performance. Quite refreshing!
Did you know that Matt can play da heck outta dat geetar!!! 🤠
Their music is always a gift to me.
This looks (and sounds) like it was recorded in a very wholesome place.
The Petersen again with a beautiful song, an excellent band but now the video is fantastic and different. Another beautiful song to their collection of bluegrass hits. It makes my day special.
Thank you for bringing sunshine into this world with your music.
Your art help us in the south polar frozen Patagonia Argentina to forget Covid for a while. We thank you. Cheers!!!
They can sing any genre (well maybe not hip hop) but I love that sweet bluegrass music they do so well.
My favorite bluegrass song by my favorite bluegrass group. It’s a good day!!
Love me some Petersen's talent, joy & freshness coming back from work! You are well loved and deeply thanked from all around the world; here, a USA-loving Frenchman salute all of you, keeping in his (non-essential) prayers to Our Lord Jesus Christ to be able to meet you one day! Thank you again, Godspeed & God bless! +Pax+
I've really come to love what Matt does on that guitar in the past year. Great song, great fun behind the trees afterwards, and classy dresses by the gals.
THANK YOU TOO MY BEAUTIFUL BROTHERS AND LOVELY SISTERS SINGING SO NICE COUNTRY HOME TIME SONGS I LOVE VERY MUCH, PLEASE CONTINUE
Thank you guys accompany my days making me dream, a hug from ITALY🇮🇹
There's nothing like bluegrass!♥️
With all the chaos in the world, when a Petersens video pops up you know God is giving us a smile.
Nice job. Katie has a very pretty singing voice. She and Ellen also had on a very pretty dress. Here is a song that would be good for this group. It was put out sometimes in the 1950's by Doc Watson. The song is called " Mama Don't Allow No Music Around Here".
I love you guys. his music brings me a lot of peace. greetings from Argentine Patagonia ❤️🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
oooohhhh Hidden Mamma behind an standbass??? no clues needed it's KRN!!!♥♥♥
This is so good I can't even believe it.
Such an upbeat song and talented performers. Love "Mama" hiding behind her instrument at the end.
