Steam Train Race up the Tharandt Incline | 8K HDR

In the course of the 15th Dresden Steam Locomotive Meeting on April 16, 2023, two steam locomotives ran parallel on the Tharandt ramp. The show freight train with the steam locomotive 52 8154 was waiting in Tharandt station for the steam locomotive 41 1144 with the passenger train to arrive. The parallel drive then took place via the Tharandter ramp to Klingenberg-Colmnitz. From there, the trains continued separately to Freiberg and finally back to Dresden Central Station. The maximum incline double-track main line is 2.6%.
The video was uploaded in 8K HDR. An HDR-compatible device is recommended for realistic color reproduction.

Ganz tolle Aufnahmen von diesem besonderen Treffen. Sieht klasse aus, wie beide Dampfloks nebeneinander fahren. Auf der Überführung hat man ja ordentlich Rauch abbekommen:-) Auch die Luftaufnahmen sind echt schön anzuschauen. Daumen hoch! Gruss inselvideo.

Vielen Dank! Leider hatte das Timing nicht so gut gepasst. Der eine Zug hat viel früher zum Überholen angesetzt als ich erwartet hatte.

When I was a kid I used to stand on a bridge when the trains would go under, got enveloped in steam and smoke, the bridge would shake, scary…but I loved it !

What grade is the Tharandt ramp? is it 1.2%, 1.4% or a really steep Sherman Hill 1.8%. Maybe it's the record breaking ultra steep a Lima to Andes plateau 2.4%

With excursion runs the only thing the "helper" engine actually helps with is providing heat and power for the coaches, since modern coaches are designed to run with a head-end power unit and aren't compatible with the steam heat ports on the steam locomotive, and then as a backup if the steam locomotive breaks down. So if anything it's actually additional weight on the passenger train.

From my limited knowledge, grey smoke indicates more efficiency so is that possibly why the engine with the black smoke was slower

Both locos have far to much water in their boilers , hence the steam coming from their cylinders .
Just Stop Oil loves this, no oil, pure coal.

Yes, they spew a lot of smoke, are dirty and not environmentally friendly, but who cares? Nothing can equal their charm and the theatre that surrounds them. For oldies like me, they are really nostalgic. Loved it every bit.

Hardly a fair race. The 41 has a few passwnger coaches and krokodil shoving it up the hill. And the 52 has several hundred tons of minerals/ by itself. Wonderful tho. And the Germans trust their railfans no to be stupid. Unlike nanny state Britain where they threaten to stop steam excursions bwcause someone 'trespassed'.

Yes in Britain the mindset is if something is difficult then it's impossible hence the immigration debacle they're currently having. The authorities just can't think outside the box. Holding Network Rail responsible if someone trespasses onto the railway lines is akin to blaming the MOT every time there's a road accident. We have two train races every year in New South Wales Australia. One in Sydney and the other on the central coast at Newcastle. The one in Sydney is two trains and the other at Newcastle can be up to four trains all running parallel. We don't have any problems and many in our railway hierarchy are ex BR and they're all for it too.
