Well you don’t like that way that I am (is not the way)
Way that you want and the way you understand (but I can’t)
Can’t help being the way that I am (it’s just the way)
Way that it is and what I know so sorry about
All of these things that I be and I know (it's all me)
And not you but this ain't how I wish (it to be)
For you and your way and I know (it’s all me)
Just know that I know, I know it’s all on me
All the little pieces make up so much sense in the distance, a-whoa-ho-ho-ho
Fragmented to the point of is it possible?
Hot on the trail of a real fine life
This could be what it means to be alive
Can’t be too sure but it feels the right way
Love is infinite like sun rays
I know what I need to be me
And I know being me makes it hard to see
Standing on a precipice isn’t new
Those demons sometimes get me seeing blue
All this, call this, what you want but it
Makes me feel alive
Stowed it , showed it, now I know it
Can’t be in my mind
It was foreign, pouring, I’ve been storing
This for a long while
I consumed, felt doomed, sung a new tune
Eventually in time
But you don’t like that way that I feel (is the way)
Way that makes you feel worse all of the time (and I know)
Know that it’s not okay for you (and it’s not)
Not for me and is for you so sorry about
All of these things that you didn’t sign up for (and I don’t)
Don’t wish the pain on you it’s so sore (but I’ve been)
Honest to fault (but it doesn’t help)
I know that hurts and it hurts and it keeps on hurting
Every single time we try and try to
make things right for you and I
We just kept digging, digging it deep
Below our feet ‘till we started to sink
And I didn’t know what what to do
I told myself the truth the truth
And I could understand and you could understand
But how could we stand, when there was nowhere to stand?
And all the little things that get under our skin
Didn’t make us better in that heavy weather
I hope that it’s better but never upsetter
We took ours hands, made some vague plan
All the little pieces make up so much sense in the distance, a-whoa-ho-ho-ho
Fragmented to the point of is it possible?
Hot on the trail of a real fine life
This could be what it means to be alive
Can’t be too sure but it feels the right way
Love is infinite like sun rays
I know what I need to be me
And I know being me makes it hard to see
The distance hasn’t always been clear
But finally with our love it could appear
And you don’t like what it is
And you don’t know what it is
And I can’t sum it up easily
But I know what it is that I plainly see
Yeah who could have liked what it was?
It caused such a fuss
My heart placed in your hand
Then we gave love a chance and

I love how every character has a kind of theme to their songs. Hatchworths previous songs and, now, Zero are kind of silly and fun. Spine comes across as romantic and love oriented/lost love and Rabbit is very heartbroken/sad, but sometimes very upbeat and positive (Malfunction comes to mind). That's not counting the group songs where they all act and sing together.

I am absolutely enamored by the decision to end the song with the word "and." It's the ultimate "show don't tell" and really emphasizes how emotional the song is, and how it uses that emotion to convey meaning. From my reading of it, this is a song about a relationship that ended poorly. Ending the song, then, with "we gave love a chance, and..." says everything by saying nothing. The Spine put faith in love, and was let down. But instead of spelling it out to the listener, y'all let the passion of the performance do that work. Really wonderful writing!

My sort of headcannon interpretation is that it could also be a loop. In code, you can have a statement that essentially repeats itself endlessly, when it ends it just starts again from the beginning. Essentially, it could represent a broken relationship with two people who love each other but simply aren't compatible for one reason or another but they keep trying anyway, even though it keeps breaking down like clockwork.

It's always a treat to hear The Spine take the lead on a song. I love how all of the recent music videos have given a different bot the chance to shine, and how different the visuals and approach to each video has been. It never ceases to amaze me how much love and care goes into every single thing this band does.

Its hard to believe that almost 7 years ago my best friend (r.i.p now 😥) introduced me to spg with the song Brass goggles, the first time i listened to it i knew he had gifted me with something special, my hope is to one day actually get to see spg play live (its hard as i live in the UK). I know Josh would have loved this song and probably play it on repeat till he knew it word for word.

I’ve just ended a 3 year relationship that was also long distance for at least 50% of the time. I’m in the UK and he’s in the US. It was a really hard choice, but this really really hits home. We lived together for a while too, it’s hella heavy but this is really helping. “All the little pieces make so much sense in the distance, fragmented to the point of is it possible.” Plus it just wasn’t helping my mental health, aka “the things he didn’t sign up for”. Thank you for always being there for me SPG, when I don’t know what to do, you remind me to tell myself the truth, the truth 💕

David is so talented at writing lyrics and music in general. The storytelling, the singing, acting is all wonderful. I love that we have a new Spine song. I can't wait to see how this song fits into the new album and the story it all tells. I know I'm probably off base, but it almost sounds like a poly relationship that soured.

I know I'm 9 months late to this comment, but honestly that was my take as well. The line "Love is infinite like sun rays" really drove the poly idea through for me. This song also came out when a poly relationship I was in had soured, and everything he sings about in this really just felt like he was talking about what I had gone through. It's probably off base, but it's definitely possible; I'm pretty sure Bunny has talked about having multiple partners in her vlogs in the past, so it wouldn't be too shocking.

OKAY SO now that I've had this song on repeat for a little bit I wanna write out a lil love letter. I absolutely adore this song, and it feels like such a sweet mix of your classic tunes and the more modern sounds you've been working with. Hearing everyone's voices boom in the bg along with spine gives me chills. ALSO MY FAVOURITE PART IS THE END!! I love the gentle quieting down of the instrumentals, the camera pulling back as the spine's body language slumps and the lyrics reveal that the relationship talked about throughout the song didn't work out. I love the last lyric of that haunting "And", and the chords not quite allowed to round off satisfyingly, implying that the story isn't over and that there's always more experiences to be had in the future for the songs protagonist. IM V BAD AT WORDING MY THOUGHTS but I hope ppl can understand what I'm trying to say! 💖 this is easily a new favourite from you guys

I feel the cutting of the end is more due to the words not needing to be said, or the words hurt so much that the sentence didn't need finishing. Reflecting on the events that have happened makes it obvious the relationship was doomed, but it only shows when you look back on it.
