There is something so magical about a stream train coming out of the darkness with its whistle like a siren song.

My abiding memory of a night journey by steam was in 1958, on the Euston-Stranraer night ferry train, climbing Shap in the dark and the shower of sparks flashing past the carriage windows - it was like descending into Dante's Inferno! Wish I'd taken the engine's name.

The sound and atmosphere of a streamer powering along the tracks! Superb. I'll imagine the smell.of steam and oil in the nightime. Great video, well filmed thank you.

How wonderfully evocative steam trains are at night.I used to listen to them in the distance when I was a young lad tucked up in bed wondering what loco's were making that noise, and where they were gong to.

Very special. Thank you. And all engines so well maintained too. When I was a child in the forties (!) I thought that all engines expelled all the used steam came out of the backs of the cylinders and not the chimneys....

When it comes to trains, the best camera work is no zoom and no movement. Just a still camera👌👌.

Perfect !...just perfect, what? That 'troop carrier' at 05:00 reminds me of when we were youngsters in Ireland & always loved it when the trains passed by at a leisurely rate, as it provided us a great chance to bounce a few ripe tomatoes off some of the pork-pie-faced blokes who stuck their mugs out the window/door openings. Blimey, what fun. ESPECIALLY if they were holding a pint a' bitters that they then dropped! Ho-Ho-Ho!...as Monsieur Santa would say.

Lovely, thanks. Strange how much more evocative whistles seem after dark. Strange, too, to hear that unmistakable A4 sound on the Talyllyn the other weekend!
