The Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally, and Legion GO are some of the best PC handheld techs there are to date. Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses. But I think the bigger aspect of which to choose comes down to which PC handheld fits your needs and what you're going to be playing on them. In this video, I break down each of them, their pros, their cons, and what makes them stand apart.

just a question why dont you turn down the resolution on the legion go to 1920x1200 instead of running it at full rez since it wont bring any advantage on such a small screen anyway, i mean i get 2 hours of games with my settings if i absolutely have to use it on the go (which i never do) i carry my legion go in a backpack and when i arrive at my destination i use it plugged in most of the time (alternative to a gaming laptop which i have) since its much more easy to carry with me instead of packing a full 17" backpack with all the bricks (charger etc) when i shifted to legion go i went from 4.5+ kg to less than 1.5kg all in one.

Its large enough to be used as a tablet pc with the added bonus that it can also game. the kickstand is just genius, I've used this thing on its kickstand more than holding it on my hand. there are 2 USBc ports too which is super useful. clicking things and touch typing on the on screen keyboard is also easier on a larger screen.....sausage fingers I know but it is what it is lol. played with a test unit of an dog ally in my local best buy and I instantly knew I'll be cursing on that thing working windows on that tiny ass screen.

Underrated SD feature: instant sleep suspension and wake. Makes it truly feel like a pick up and go device that can be played at any time. Windows simply isn’t built for that I also have windows installed on a microsd for anti-cheat games (I’m amazed I can play modern warfare 3 on this). This thing does everything. The only thing it’s missing out on more performance but it still has been able to play everything great and if I want to have the highest end experience I’ll just play on my desktop. I personally couldn’t deal with having the windows jank be part of my core handheld experience

Loving my Legion Go!!! Planned on getting it and returning it and trying the Ally before making a final decision, with steam deck as a backup plan. But this gigantic beautiful screen, and removable controllers are a no brainer. The buttons and sticks feel so great! And it’s not heavy at all for me. The controllers are SO ergonomic unlike the Ally and Switch. Speakers are no problem. I didn’t even download audio software like people suggested. They sound fine. Fan noise is not even noticeable to me unless I have it plugged in to the TV and set the TDP to 30. And it has TWOOO USB C ports? This means I don’t NEED a dock to play on the TV. Just USB C to HDMI on the top, charger on the bottom and I play for hours. And did I mention THE KICKSTAND??? It’s amazing. Better than the switch. Not only is it great for standing the Legion Go upright, but it allows you to stand it up ON ITS SIDE. Perfect for laying in bed and resting on your side with controllers to your side relaxing. Can’t do that on other handhelds. I don’t even need to prop the Legion Go up on a pillow to play it on its side. The kickstand does it all. It’s so substantial. This also means when I plug it in to the TV I can just use the stand to have it on its side so there’s no issue with the cords. Battery life hasn’t been an issue either. With 2 charging ports, I can just plug in if needed. In whichever direction is convenient at the time. But even then, I haven’t had an issue considering game in short bursts. Being windows, I get any game I want. Gamepass got me Starfield, Deathloop, Coral Island, FarCry 6 and more. Other games I downloaded from their site. And then I downloaded Steam for my first time ever. Then BOOM Steam sale. So now I have a handful of other games. Next comes emulation. Any game I want, I have access to! This thing is great. There’s no way I could use one of these others where the controllers don’t even come off.

Being able to dual boot SteamOs via BazziteOs and use a gaming front to make Windows gives us a console like experience. Does require initial setup, but imo it's worth it. Works seamless and I haven't had any issues with my Ally once it was set up. I did make a custom Os with NTLite and removed a ton of stuff from Windows to make it very lightweight. With these things in mind for me the Ally is a nobrainer. With Skull & Co grips it feels solid to hold as well. And the placement of thumbsticks is exactly like on the Xbox controllers. Just got the OLED Steam Deck, playing Yakuza 0 at 45FPS / 90Hz and getting like 5 hours of playtime is really nice. 👍 I'm aware that it's an older title, but the image looks crisp at high settings, no blurry pixel mishmashing like FSR is required, it can play at rock solid 90FPS as well, I just prefer to have slightly more battery life. Just commenting on this since saying 1.5 hours of battery life couldn't be farther from the truth, I'm not even talking about a 2D game here. I have an LCD deck as well, can check the expected battery life on it if you'd find it useful.

@@AqroMedia Idk, never tried the others. But I'm quite satisfied with this resolution on a 7 inch screen. If this is what I have to pay for having 100% more battery life and not being forced to use Windows I take it anytime. I also have a laptop that's equivalent to a ps5 (actually a fair bit stronger) and a pc with a 3090, I use each of them for different use cases. For a handheld I think battery life and the overall user experience is the most important, of course game compatibility as well, which is quite good on Linux. If this was not the case why would the Switch be that popular compared to Windows handhelds. At the end of the day it's nice having competition, it drives the market and it's up to the user to choose based on their own preferences.

I’ve had a Rog Ally z1 extreme for over a year. My third one actually. First two didn’t last long and thankfully I still had warranty. I just got a OLED steam deck and now my Ally is for sale. One thing many of us forget is that the paper specs don’t tell us what it’s like to live with. The deck is an overall more polished and refined machine. In my opinion it’s much better to just grab and go like a handheld. The Ally is closer to a laptop with a controller attached. Very buggy and can be annoying when the system doesn’t cooperate. I just got tired of dealing with the issues instead of playing the game while I had the time. Good power but definitely rough around the edges. I hope their next system will fix the issues many of us have because that system has allot of potential as a handheld gaming device.

I've seen a lot of people argue that you should either just get the Steam Deck for the emulation capabilities, or just buy an older Android phone with snapdragon and run a controller on it. I'm thinking of buying a Steam Deck personally, or the Legion Go for the controller that it already has that can be taken off.

Legion Go for me. I got one about a week after release. It's been a rough first few months, but Lenovo is finally pulling it together on the software end especially with the most recent Legion Space and controller updates. The screen is gorgeous and great for all use cases. It's big enough that bars above and below 16:9 games aren't as big of a deal as they are on the Steam Deck. It's even better when running emulators with retro games. The 16:10 screen is perfect because it gives more vertical space for games that run in 4:3. It also a better PC replacement. The screen is big enough to use with a keyboard and mouse to do everyday computing tasks without the need to connect to an external monitor.

27:25 It's really worth noting that this performance increase for ROG Ally and Legion Go over the Steam Deck is basically only possible while plugged in to a charger(like you're showing in the video), because without a charger you get like sub 1 hour battery life. Otherwise, you get more or less the same performance if you set it to a power level that the Steam Deck is operating at.

I travel quite a bit and own both ROG Ally and Legion Go (Legion go was not announced when I got the Ally). Since buying the Legion Go, I haven’t touched the Ally. I absolutely the versatility of the legion. When on a plane, being able to pull of the controllers and set up your screen on the back of the headrest is awesome and so much more comfortable than trying to hold either handheld in hand/on your lap. Highly recommend buying a controller joiner off eBay or Etsy. Legion screen is big enough that it’s still very usable at that distance too. Same goes for when docking on tv/other monitor. When I go home, i travel with a dock and works great when setting up on tv. 2nd usb c port is so invaluable. Overall i just love the flexibility of the Legion Go.

I almost bought the Legion Go a week ago, but then thought that I want a console like experience (just better for me than Windows gaming) and be able to play my Steam or Epic Games and PSP games. Then the Deck Oled stood out for being able to handle the games I play, not too heavy in my hands (wrist problems and the Go would cause more harm) and I am satisfied with the Deck after a week and I am not regretting this decision over the Go.

Should I get the regular SD OLED or etched glass OLED model if I mainly play indoors with anywhere from lights off dark room, to dim room no overhead lights on, to moderately lit up room? I'm leaning towards the regular since I could also save $100, but part of me still wonders about the 1tb etched glass version

Of you want to use a screen protector, than the etched version has also no benefit, because the protector now reflects light. Also you can later buy a screen protector that is etched itself. Also colors are better on non-etched versions. It just pops more. Seen this myself with friends.

Glossy glass all the way. I don’t care what anyone says, OLED will always look better unobscured by any amount of matte coating. You can always upgrade the SSD in the future if you want. I swapped mine to 1TB on my glossy version and I have zero regrets

The regular Z1 can be bought open-box for around $350. Now with AMD Fluid Frames, it puts out more FPS than the Steam Deck OLED so for the money, it's the better choice.

I've owned all 3 (LCD Steam Deck though) - Each gave me some recency bias, but my take is the SD is great for low power titles and emulation, the Ally is a huge step up for performance and with Windows native the best UI of the Windows models, plays AAA titles very well but ergonomics are tough. SD drove me nuts trying to get titles from Epics Games Launcher and other platforms going. Getting Horizon Zero Dawn going was like tweaking so many settings it damn near required a degree. The weight being so light is great, and I never had any issue with the screen, very nice LCD screen. The GO has the best build quality, its a chunky monkey but the performance from that speedier RAM seems to make a big difference and the screen is beautiful and actually usable. I can see what I'm doing in MWII in multiplayer. The other things that have stuck out to me are the battery, which seems to be much better than the Ally, though testing on several channels haven't shown it. A usuable Micro SD expansion slot, detachable controls of course and in my testing the WiFi card is way faster than the Ally. The kickstand is also very sturdy and very useful.Downsides: Weight, Replacing 3 Batteries vs 1, speakers compared to the Ally. I think its the winner for me.

I only have maximum a hour to myself in a day. I don’t have the time or energy to go figure out or search and try problem fixing issues. I just want a handheld that simply I can pick up and play. And I am a Triple A player. Some of my game list include: cyberpunk, Hogwarts legacy, helldivers 2, Elden Ring just to name a few. Remember I want and need 0 tinkering.

Had all 3 & kept the legion go. Rog Ally has trash analogue sticks & the SD card reader is a time bomb! The triggers are also cheap & had 2 models after having to return one. It feels cheap & does not fill you with confidence. OLED is class but limited with newer AAA games. If you have a PC & OLED then you sorted as best of both but if you wanted a hand held gaming PC & have no gaming PC then get the LLG. Been playing WWE 2k24 & RE4 Remake & it looks gorgeous. If battery is a issue get a power bank. W11 isn't perfect but the bigger screen helps having access to more than 1 games launcher with having to use heroic & other faffs on the SD is massive win

@@nanamin7298But the highest resolution & refresh rate doesn't mean much when anything besides indie/small game won't be able to use it. At native resolution you'll get much better perf on the Ally. In most benchmark I've seen the Go get better perf at the same resolution or 800p vs 720/1200p vs 1080 but it's doesn't look better as you have a bigger screen & the difference from native rez is much higher. In many game the Go also lose in stability (lower 1%) because of it's 16:10 ration & native portrait mode screen. Then the Ally has VRR which will make the game smoother too. In the battery department the Go isn't better at native rez but is doing better at same/similar resolution.
