Steam Bending and Laminating Transom Knees! ***Episode 21***

Episode 21
In this episode it's time to make a start on the next stage of the transom build, the Transom Knees.
I've decided to steam bend and laminate the knees using seasoned english oak boards.
So templating, setting up the steamer and selecting the boards is the first priority of this task.
Sometimes things go really well, sometimes they just don't!

Hello Finn, As Epictetus puts it, "It is not events that disturb people, it is their judgements concerning them." You have faced earlier setbacks with fortitude & I could feel your disappointment when the second knee sprang back, however 2022 offers a fresh opportunity to move forward. To Epictetus, all external events are beyond our control; we should accept whatever happens calmly and dispassionately. Yeah, right! Sometimes, it's better to let it out & have a damn fine rant & then restart the task in front of you. May you have a happier new year & good fortune to you.

Great video Finn. I have steam bent quite a few parts. Some thicker like snow sled runners, and some thinner like guitar and bouzouki sides. I hope these become welcome suggestions. First, when i make my formers I generate the former with more curve than necessary to allow for spring back. That is certainly more guess than science. Second, I allow the timbers to stay a couple of days in the former if I can to thoroughly cool down and dry. The thicker the wood the longer the stay. And third, I glue the pieces in the very former that they dried in. On bigger projects that may mean that I need to make two or three formers so that they can really spend some time in them. With all those provisions I will still get some failures. That is life and that is the nature of working with wood. That all being said, couldn’t you simply make one more laminate on that particular knee? That seems like it would give you plenty of room for your pattern. For sure there will be some grain run-out but there will still be tremendous strength in that knee - and you will have three other knees within inches of that one. Seems like it should be plenty strong enough. I really appreciate the videos and all of the effort you have put into this project. And as I said before, it was wonderful watching your skills and interest level devolve on the TH project. IMO you were instrumental in getting the ribs on in time and your leadership skill were apparent. Best of Christmas wishes to you.

Can I offer a bit of advice, I have been a Carpenter and spent many years forming timber starting from the age of 15, I am now 72 and for most of my adult life running my own business, so when consolidating the last form use the same jig / former as you used for the steam bending it will ensure they all end up the same, hope this helps. Great vlog, shall follow with intense interest.

Laminating like this makes some really strong & beautiful parts, but I too have learned (the hard way) to expect some springback. The thicker each layer is, the more it springs back. I can see steaming makes a big difference, but doesn't completely eliminate it. I really like watching you work with the tools & space available to us commoners, and still do high quality woodwork. Thanks Finn, Merry Christmas!

Yep--springback is real. I've been making bent shaft laminated canoe paddles for 2 years and that happened to my first shaft. I learned to apply the glue, re-clamp the shaft to the bending form and and let it cure for several days befroe removing. Love your work!

  • @ciberbri59

My thought also. It would leave a little internal tension in the glue up but should result in zero spring back. Springback is so unpredictable and hard to design for.

Hi Finn. Just in case you are unaware, the epoxy can be heated to a point where it can be taken apart. If you put the knee back in the steam box it shouldn't take as long as all that to heat it with the steam to that point. Also, the oak can then be steamed again to be able to re bend it on the former. I hope you read this before you start making a new knee, you can sand the faces back a bit before re applying thickened epoxy.

Spring back can be a real bummer. We generally place steam bent material in "resting" from to let it fully dry and set. This has helped keep spring back to a minimum. But it is not 100%, when steam bending you just never know. I've had some pieces that actually got tighter after steaming. I wish you better luck on your next attempt.
