Stealthy Hammock Camping ..Hiding in the Woods

My first attempt at a real stealth hammock camp - always a challenge to hide when you’re hanging above the ground but I think this turned out pretty good :D

Hi Claire. Thank you so much for all your videos! I love every one. I hate giving unsolicited advice as much as I do receiving it so I will just share my hammock experience and let everyone camp their own camp. I found that in a gathered end hammock(not the trough type with the spreader bars) that if I lay in it diagonally, then I can lay very flat rather than have my neck and spine curved like a banana . It feels weird at first because we don't normally sleep in a bed or on a mat that way. It has greatly improved my comfort while hammock camping. Give it a go if you like. You might find that it makes your hammock adventures even more comfy and cozy. Thanks again Claire!

My hammock says to do this, but I can't figure it out, to be honest - the automatic bundling up of the hammock always presses me so I end up straight, unless I lay down practically horizontally, but then my head and feet don't fit in. How do you manage it so you stay in that diagonal position?

  • @xthinker88

    @xthinker88

    18 күн бұрын

Yes. That’s the way to do it. Otherwise your back is a shallow c shape all night which is not good. Sleeping diagonally lets you lay flat.

  • @MrDegsy69

@@xthinker88 I've always found if you are reasobably tall a double gathered end hammock helps tremendously in getting that diagonal or ' Brazilian lay' spot on due to the extra width it affords. Another good trick is to experiment with the amount of sag until you get it dialled in pefectly. Once you've found that sweet spot you can attach an adjustable structural ridgeline made from dynema cord to make the process easily repeatable each time when setting up your suspension webs or whoopee slings.

Hey Claire! If you hang your hammock, try and make sure that your rope, isnt more then 30degrees, otherwise you'll get folded up like a banana! The way to check this is to hold your fingers like a pistol, if the thumb and the tip of the pointer finger touch the rope, it's a good lay. Anything less then 30, you'll risk falling out, anything more it's like being a banana. Can't wait to get out and overnight in my hammock setup again... SOON!

  • @Paekabou

... and once u got that 30ish° figured out I'd highly advise you get some non stretch cord, like dyneema and tie in a ridgeline to permanently fix that sag, no matter how much you play with the tie-outs to the trees. (The length is usually about 83% of the hammock length as a guide). Happy camping!!

I went into hammock camping thinking you just need two trees and you're set. No. You need two trees which aren't too thick, aren't two thin , aren't to far apart, aren't too close together, are on reasonably level ground and have no obstructions between them. Then you can do the hard part of hanging your hammock. You did a great job Claire.

Pro tips: Head end of hammock needs to be lower than foot end by about a foot (as you are laying down. Lay diagonally, not like a banana, if possible in your hammock. Suspension should usually be around the tree at or below your own eye level as you stand by the tree (varies by your height of course) will give you about 1 to 2 feet of ground clearance.

I spotted when you wanted to get the hammock higher you pushed the tree huggers' up Well you had whoopee slings on the end of the hammock and you can raise and lower it with them. I'm assuming the hammock is new and you haven't used it before because I watch all your videos and don't remember you ever in one before. However, all that being said you did a great job. 👍👍👍👍

Awesome! I love your channel ❤ I am a "pro" hammock camper, family tradition down south where im from, and i discovered my talent for ropes at a young age. Recently, i became homeless, and i live in the city. Ive been stealth camping with a hammock for years, mainly to try out Do-It-Yourself gear i make, for hammock camping. Ive been stealth camping in local Hill top public parks, some urbanized and one wild. I was inside of a california redwood tree, 10ft up and no one could see me unless they were under the tree! And no other homeless people, or worse, could get to me up there. I slept very well and even pitched my tarp up there. Getting inside the tree involved parkour, and set up was almost like the old time sail ships, with the climbing and rigging. Hammocks are difficult to hide! Im taking a page out of birds and nesting my hammock ontop of hills, or places with sloping ground, or inside of large trees. So far, so good. I am safe from the dangerous drug addicts in my city, nested away in hammock bird nests.

Hi. As a long-time hammock camper, I think the best way to be comfortable in a gathered end hammock like yours is to get a diagonal lay. You'll need a little more slack in the hammock itself than is afforded by simply tying off to trees. You can install a ridgeline directly to the ends of the hammock itself that will keep the gathered ends a set distance apart no matter how you attach to the trees. This will allow you to lay more diagonally in the hammock, which keeps your body flatter and not as much of a banana. You'll have to play around with it to figure out the length that works best with your body and that particular hammock, but once it's dialed in, you can leave it installed on the hammock and have the perfect lay every time (use a cord that will not stretch). I also suggest you attach your head end just a little lower on the tree than your foot end. It seems counter-intuitive, but it's actually more comfortable that way.

Hammock camping is awesome in the wild. A couple of tips I have found from trial and error...1st is to wrap around the tree at shoulder height to start and that is a good starting point to adjust the height. b) is to get in and be on a slight 10 degree angle from top to bottom, off kilter so to speak. I found placing a pillow under my knees helped too but at 6'2 that might be due to my height and a dodgy knee. Sleeping bannana style isn't good for the knees. A tarp over the top definitely helps too and also gives a small amount of protection from widow makers. Lastly, an underblanket keeps the chill from underneath getting to your back, legs and arse when sleeping. A midge net included in the hammock is a bonus too. FWIW I have a few vids on my channel of hammock camping to give you an idea.

Thanks for another wonderfully relaxing video. Hammock in the woods does sound like a plan. If you're interested, the 'spider' was actually a harvestman (order Opiliones - also an arachnid, so related to spiders). There are thousands of different ones and most are omnivores, eating things as diverse as insects, fungi, plants and dead and decaying stuff. Probably not spag bol though. Phew.

Well Claire , this is the first time I've seen you make a real stealth attempt. I'll give you some tips. Pick an area where a pile of leaves the size of your tent just fits in, the you can use a bright red or bright yellow tent, then you cover it up in a queen size large black sheet, Then you start with multiple layers of camo with the last layer mixed with real vegitation from the same area. Then you can be literally 3 feet away from it and not see the tent.

Efficient relaxing in a hammock takes practice...and it's always good to practice! Get the spacing dialed in, make a thing called a structural ridge line and you can hang your hammock in minutes, toss a tarp over it and regardless of the weather sit back, chill out, cook, do whatever. I use one in all conditions from 100F/38C to 10F/-12C. We have snow, rain, insane storms, but set it up right and it's the way to go. Of course I'm a little (as in WAY) farther off trail than that!

Love the hammock setup....just roll out of bed for morning coffee. And it beats falling out of a top bunkbed in the middle of the night. I picked up the same alcohol stove 2 mths back and fell in love with it. One word of warning though (just found out the hard way!) The rubber o-ring generally doesn't fall out and holds up well if you let the stove cool first...no leaks. But once the stove gets carbonized/dirty it can stick to the rim of stove, and in low light you MAY not see it! I didn't, only to smell plastic burning...argh! Time for a new stove or 2.
