Staying Warm This Winter With Our Rocket Mass Heater | Zero Cost Completely Off-Grid

This is how we've been keeping our house the perfect temperature when it gets below freezing outside... and doing it for free. It's also a mix of emotions as our dog Crew goes in for surgery to remove a tumor.

Jim and Jess, I cried when I saw your video today. It’s like a replay of what I went through with my dog, Duke. As I told you before, I’m glad I got him operated in. He had a wonderful last year of life, after the surgery. He also had three more small growths under his R eye, that were removed during his surgery. The vet was sure they’d come back. The labs were positive for cancer. He looked so happy, tho. He could eat without pain after his sutures healed, and after his hair grew back you couldn’t see the scars. I never regretted my decision. He was 12 yrs old at the time of the surgery. He was 13 when he died. He just passed in his sleep one night. He’s buried out in my back yard. I never got another dog. I didn’t listen to what others wanted me to do, which was to put him down to save money. That last year he had was worth every penny. He will have some pain if he barks or eats the next few days, but I pray he’s fully recovered soon. God bless you.

Hi from wet and windy Cornwall UK if you Fine that your rocket stove is causing a draft from doors and windows then the best thing to do is to put a pipe through the wall and draw the air from outside to feed the rocket stove and that will cancel the draft sale which would warm the property up quicker and keep it warmer longer good luck well done

I am so impressed and inspired by the dedication and the integrity with which the two of you persist despite difficulties. I started out on the homestead path, for excellent reasons, five decades ago, then somehow was derailed by medical school and a long clinical and teaching career. All of that was good, but if I had it to do over, I would choose to continue the homesteading/self-reliance path. Blessings on you, your dogs, your chickens, and all the wildlife that are attracted to you.

Have you thought about runing a 3 inch or so duct from the top of the inside of course lol, down the wall to the lower lvl and use a computer fan to draw down the warmer air? It would keep the inside more regulated an make for less fire time, less fuel usage etc. I don’t know how much battery usage a single fan would use per day but it should just be able to move the hot air from the peak. Just a thought. Glad the RMH is working good for you.

Ok I would like to know the temps on the upper level when it’s 72 on the main level. I’m so happy Crew got through the surgery. You worry so much about older dogs and their health. Think about a steel plate for over the opening to add wood, a plate about the size of the block , you could put the pot for hot water or cooking but still be able to add wood, like an old wood stove. Love watching you guys❣️❣️❣️Merry Christmas 🎄 and Happy New Year 🍾

My old shep of 13 yrs had hip dysplasia she could barely get off her hind quarters but I heard of Hip and Joint repair Glucosamine and chondroitin from K-9 and it turned my old dog back in a pup, she could run around and jump within 2 weeks. I just thought that could help Crew. Colloidal silver might help him as well for the growth, to stop growth in the future..

In 1980 I had the opportunity to visit an Egyptian peasant's home in Aswan, Egypt. It was over 100 degrees F outside. It was a mud brick structure. We entered an outer wall which enclosed a circular outer enclosure which was used for storage. The inner structure was pleasantly cool and I was served hot tea in a glass by the host. No a/c and I can't remember if there was electricity. He was a construction worker and I bought a couple of ancient bronze coins (one was a Hadrian and the other was issued by Cleopatra's grandfather). He offered gold coins but I couldn't afford them.

It's good you've gotten the rmh fired up and you've seen no issues that'll hopefully put your mind at rest for the upcoming winter months knowing how little it takes to heat the dome sounds like it actually got a little too hot but you'll find a routine as you go. It's pretty fascinating to see how well it's working and I'm intrigued by whatever ideas Jess is going to have for the bench she's so artistic and creative I know it'll be great! Thinking about your boy Crew and sending out prayers for his complete recovery along with a clean bill of health in the coming weeks I'm happy he didn't appear too uncomfortable after his surgery. I can see from your worried faces, the toll it's taken on you all. Hopefully it's just smooth sailing ahead and the worst is behind you for a good long while. ❤

Hi Jim. Good to see the rmh is working for you. Check the temperature upstairs. It should be 10 to 15 degrees warmer. What would help stabilize the domes temperature is to pipe air from upstairs to the basement. I’ve done this in an earth sheltered house and it cuts down how much wood you burn and makes the whole house’s temperature more stable. Keep a pot of water on the heater to keep it from drying out everything.

its more efficient to trickle feed a mass heater like that to keep a good temp than it is to burst and starve it. You *can* (and have) been successful in burst feeding it, but it's also easier to go overboard and get too hot. Its all about managing the delay between putting fuel in and having the additional heat percolate through the bench/mass. Which, you'll dial in over time.

It's interesting to hear your account of how your RMH is heating your dirt bag dome. My set up is different, and I can see the pros and cons for both from your experience. Mine is frame, insulated, but not thick insulation. It's small. I have a small wood stove to heat it. We've had morning temperatures in the 20s often, and it was 17 this morning. If the coldest temperatures are in the low 30s, it's 60 deg inside in the morning. If it's in the 20s, it's about 50 deg, and if in the teens, then low 40s. So of course I get the stove fired up right away. It takes about 45 min for the stove to get to get hot enough to make a noticeable difference. In that time it raises the inside temperature maybe 5 deg. Then it gets to really full heat, where you can feel it across the room, and it raises the temperature 10-15 deg an hour. In a couple of hours it's 75 or even 80 (if I added wood later than I should have). It stays good all day until dark (if the day is nice and gets into the 60s). If the day is cold and cloudy, I have to make another smaller fire mid-day. Your place holds the heat much better, as you would expect. Your heater heats slower, but lasts longer. You have slower temperature swings. So my place heats up quicker and was quicker and easier to build, but your place holds that heat nicely. In the summer, my place gets much hotter than yours does, and I open all the windows and turn on a fan. If the temperature is around 100 outside, it'll be 90 inside. So for everybody deciding between walls that are thick and slow to build, or thin and fast to build, here's some data to help decide.

Think about adding an outside cold air inlet to feed your fire. If you're drawing from the air in the dome then the (cold) air from outside will flow into the house to replace it.
