Staying In North Korea’s MOST EXPENSIVE Hotel 💲 🏨 | Pyongyang, North Korea

Ойын-сауық

The Pothonggang Hotel is North Korea’s most expensive, and fanciest hotel. It’s located in Pyongyang, and a night here in this North Korean hotel will set a few hundred USD - depending on if you want a standard, premier, or VIP Suite room. (I stayed in a standard one).
I’ve only had the privilege of spending the night here on one tour, but I go here frequently as this is one of the locations you can top up your phone for internet in North Korea. It’s also the only hotel with WiFi service. 😱
Many ask about the nicest hotel in North Korea… The best hotel in North Korea… I’ll do a video on Hotels of North Korea soon, because I can’t answer these questions just like that. I have a favourite hotel, but it’s not because it’s the nicest or best. And everyone has their own preferences when it comes to accommodation!

POTHONGGANG HOTEL
The Pothonggang hotel is located on the banks of the Potong river in Pyongyang. Despite it’s name literally meaning ‘normal hotel’, it is far from normal.
Built in 1973, the Pothonggang Hotel is one of North Korea's top-class hotels and is one of Pyongyang's fanciest and most expensive hotels - if not the most expensive.
Both local Koreans and foreigners can use this hotel, and it can get pretty busy during summer.
The Pothonggang Hotel has a large exterior. There is a large driveway up to the main entrance of the hotel, as well as a large parking area just below.
Behind the hotel, there is a large terrace area where you can dine or have drinks on a warm evening.
The Pothonggang Hotel has a total of 9 floors.
On the first floor, you can find a Korean restaurant, a barber's, beauty parlour, sauna, massage room, and fitness room.
On the second floor, there is the reception, an international communications service office, a bookshop, a coffee shop, karaoke, three interview rooms, a banquet hall with 180 seats, and various restaurants. There are also multiple number of high-class shops selling various types of clothing, as well as a food shop selling various foreign products.
There is also a KoryoLink office - the foreign internet service provider.
There is also a WiFi service in the lobby.
POTHONGGANG HOTEL CAFE
The Pothonggang Hotel coffee shop is located in the lobby and reception area. It is an open plan but cosy area that plays Austrian classical music and gives the illusion that you are somewhere else in the world.
To the back of the coffee shop, there is a wall partition offering a more private experience.
The coffee is good but expensive. You can also get various bar snacks and light meals. Alcohol is also available here.
POTHONGGANG HOTEL ROOMS
There are standard, premium, and VIP rooms available, and I take a look to see what they’re all like. When I visited, two out of the three VIP rooms were already full.
Standard - The standard room costs 10,360 DPRKorean Won per night.
(Approx 103 USD)
They are basic but large.
There are two standard single beds, a TV with foreign channels, and a basic bathroom with bathtub.
Premium - The premium room costs 18, 340 DPRKorean Won per night.
(Approx 183 USD)
This room is made up of two areas - a bedroom with ensuite bathroom, and a lounge area with large TV and sofa, as well as a reading desk and chair, and a small fridge.
VIP - The VIP Suite costs 38, 360 DPRKorean Won per night.
(Approx 384 USD)
You will spend about 5 minutes trying to navigate this suite.

Might have something to do with the fact that it’s the most sanctioned country on earth 🤷‍♀️ Before the collapse of its trading block, via the Soviet Union, working class people in North Korea had a better quality of life than comparable capitalist countries and decent economic growth. Where South Korea did have the edge, it’s because it had the richest country on the planet giving it full support - in fact, the US gave more aid to South Korea than it gave to all of Africa or Latin America combined. The Western press is totally dishonest about the history of the DPRK and why it’s in such a horrible position.

I noticed a woman duck into the bathroom at the end of the video, I’m curious if you found that the guests avoided the camera while you were filming this? The staff seemed comfortable. Basically most guests are out in the day (tourists) and I presume the cars are from people here to have lunch or for some meetings (so busy away somewhere else). And if the cars are from tourists then I presume they're resting in their rooms - sounds silly but a tour to North Korea is very tiring. You hardly have any time in the hotel so the time when you do it might just be a 30 minute break to change clothes or catch up on stuff.

I don't want to appear critical - but I suspect if you saw the real North Korea, you'd burst into tears. People starve in that nation for no better reason than to keep the elite in luxury. Anybody visiting that country is effectively supporting that regime.

"Ethical travel to North Korea" is simply a non-sequitur, I'm sorry.
