Stay with the Amish? One way to do it

Ever wondered if you could stay overnight on an Amish farm? Here's one way to do it.
My name is Erik Wesner and I'm not Amish. Back in 2004, I met the Amish while selling books. Since then, I've visited 5,000+ Amish homes & dozens of Amish communities. My book on Amish business, Success Made Simple: An Inside Look at Why Amish Businesses Thrive, was published in 2010. I run the Amish America website: amishamerica.com/

I have never stayed at a Amish home but I defiantly would like to. As someone that's older and not tied to social media, etc., it seems like an Amish stay would be very relaxing and perhaps eye opening.

Being from the county I miss the smell of hay, and cow poop. Pigs and chickens, not so much. :) I live such a minimalist life the Amish would be proud of me. The only thing I gave in to is power and internet.

You mentioned the website, however I have another suggestion, we shop monthly at a Amish grocery store.. just as you exit they have a bulletin board anyone can use.. mostly driving service as the buggy can only go so far. Put your card up. Southern Iowa has stores as well northern Missouri.. they are in places you wouldn't expect.. the little weekly shopper newspaper is how we found ours. As for meeting an Amish person, I used a local Walmart and almost every day the town had a Amish person walking, I talked to a man and apparently they come to town for a doctor's care and stay at a nearby motel. I'll warn you, he had halitosis like mad, as if he drank very sour or butter milk.

Great idea! More and more people are looking to go back to basics. In the RV world the huge trend is to go solar and stay off grid. I'd be surprised if more of the Amish do not sign up for Harvest host where people can stay for a night in there parking lot to drum up more business. But it would have to be some of the more progressive ones because it's many done on line.

My husband is Amish. He left when he was 18 year olds and he say that he would not go back living on a Amish farm. His family don't like when he said that he went to do a police officer. Then he told them that we was going to get married to me. I am a Mennonite. His family don't like him married a Mennonite. They had a Amish girl for him to married. It hard to raise our kids when they are half Mennonite and Amish. So we raise them in some Amish away and Mennonite life style.

I understand where you are coming from grew up as a teenager on a farm and on summer vacations as a child we would go to my grandparents Farm. My grandfather owned his own feed mill and would grind feed for various farmers in the area. So every time I go get feed from my local Mill I just stand there and I inhale deeply and memories just start.

The Amish must think some English are so bizarre. I mean, who pays to stay at someone elses farm just to observe how you live?? For a vacation? Seems like a very urbanite thing to do. Like, this is a farm, not a hotel or an exhibition. We have work to do.

@@marylee7467 I agree with you. Due to living in various areas as a child growing up there are certain words I pronounce in a different way than the local area that I live in now. Quarter, Park, garage, I speak with a northern accent. Pecan, you all, stay awhile, I speak with an southern accent. When I was younger I said home and roof like Erik. Someone told me that I sound like I'm from north Texas. One of my children say puurty in place of pretty. So to me that what makes each of us unique.
