During an era when America had leadership, strength, class and direction.
Where are these wise and compassionate leaders today?

Oh that Van Cliburn were here now and this lovely atmosphere! What a difference and he created it. Remembered with affection!
Mikhail Gorbachev is now gone. Truly the end of an era of East-West relations never to be repeated.
Miss those days, when people understood each other despite their differencies Kiev, USSR
He was such a gentleman. And one of the great ones. RIP, Mr. Cliburn.
Amazing how culture can be such a gentle ambassador! But it requires both exceptional performers and educated hearts. Seems like times like these will not return.
This wonderful musician did more for detente and US/Soviet relationships that evening than an army of diplomats could do in a year of meetings.

Echoing your thought, Reagan himself said that he felt the cold war melt away as he heard the Gorbachevs sing along to Moscow Nights.
May both of them rest in peace!
Van Cliburn .. what a gracious man. So authentic, so heartwarming, a true patriot and goodwill ambassador ... Fort Worth is very proud of him. May he rest in peace.

My wonderful boyfriend, now equally wonderful husband, introduced me to Van, when we started dating. Unfortunately, at that point he was done touring. I immediately, and hopelessly, fell in love with him, and his transcendental playing...he will forever hold a piece of my heart, and I hold him dear, whenever I play my own piano! ❤️
Rip to George H. W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Mikhail Gorbachev.
He would only have American sparkling wine served while entertaining heads of state. What a patriot!

I love the moment when MG arrived in his mythic limo Zil ... like a authentic state leader. So, we don't must forget one thing; Gorvachev and Yeltsin was a pair of persons easy of surprising with this kind of ceremonies and protocols to try of buy their dignities ... Reagan did it with Gorvachev... Clinton with Yeltsin... Both american presidents buy the dignity of those two leaders.... but now with Putin all that protocols and ceremonies are obsoletes and useless when a authentic world leader knows what really wants the US government. Why Obama, Bush, don't doing the same thing ?? Easy, Putin is honest and unbreakable with the US methods. This is history, today the world is different. Russia is not the Soviet Union anymore ...Russia is different today.

Here is the stark example of how a foreign country treats Gorbachev - a person who is going to ruin his homeland. He is venerated, respected and cherished as a hero. On the contrary, look at how they feel about Putin now - (not a flawless person at all, but still) who is a Russian patriot and defends Russia's interest on every front - he is being hated, smeared and turned into a boogeyman in the West. How can one not see hypocricy and not hate politics after that?
@charmainemorley2197

I think this piece says more about Van Cliburn than the politics. His warmth towards everyone and his singing of Moscow Nights. You would have to be hard hearted to quarrel with his attempt to bring folks together in music and song and his gracious manner.

@@charmainemorley2197 So beautifully stated! We need more Van Cliburns in the world, don’t we? I remember when he returned from Russia, people asked him if he was a communist or if he supported communism. Some people just couldn’t see the impact he had made, and see beyond the political part of it. He made such a connection with the people, from the moment he took the stage…and to this day, Russians still appreciate the awakening he gave them. One man really did make a difference! He solidified the universal language of music! ❤️He was such a classy, beautiful, man…who deeply loved his state of Texas, his country, and by all accounts everyone whose path he ever crossed. I cannot love him more than I do! When it was my time to choose a favorite pianist, I’m glad I found him! I’m glad that you found him, too! ❤️
