Oscar Robertson doesn't get talked about enough as one of the greatest of all time. He played his carreer without a three point line. The game was very different, and he was a dominant player from the point. That was much more rare when he played.

None of us saw him play. Even if you are old enough to be alive then and still remember what was going on most of the games weren’t available, the ones that were played on a delay. He played with Kareem in an era wrought with drug issues and expansion and only came away with a single title? Yes he has a boat load of triple doubles but as you’ve seen in todays nba you can get triple doubles in a variety of ways. Was he playing to win? Was he playing for stats? Was he a great defender? Maybe possibly the answer to all these questions is the correct one and he is in fact a top player of all time. Without any evidence or a more undeniably robust résumé it’s just impossible to say. That’s why he gets left out.

It’s odd, because this statistic’s actual importence for a team to win a game is very volatile. A point heavy triple-double could mean that you’re the team’s number one option, so naturally you’re going to take more shots, and generate more plays. If it’s done for a bad team, but you carry your whole team, it’s a heroic performance. But it can also mean that the team plays well together and has good chemistry and is playing a fast pace - more possesions type of game, then sometimes very random players can get triple-doubles just cause the good ball movement and style of the team’s play (like Draymond Green). Also I think there’s different types of rebounding. It can be a crowded huge fight for the ball at the like Rodman, Olajuwon, Ewing, Garnett, Duncan etc. Or it can be the type where there is more spacing, generally a more perimeter oriented game, “positionsless basketball” as they say - that a lot more people are gonna be in the position to grab a rebound. Smaller guys like Westbrook. So this whole stat depends like so much, how each player plays in a statistically-speaking totally different era. I am high and I don’t remember anything I wrote.

@@perfxshun3766 kind of hard to explain...i dare say the "value" of assists are different..guys like cp3 truly create chances for teammates and help them score easier buckets, whereas a big portion of westbrook's assists compose of deadball disposals where he just chucks it to the guy next to him with 2seconds on the clock or "intentionally" starts to force bad shots on teammates when he has 8, 9 dimes in a game. Nobody 100% discredits his greatness of course, but seriously if you have ever seen one of his games (not the highlights, the full game) you would know what these guys are talking about.

Triple doubles have lost their mystique nowadays. It's easier to get triple doubles when your star player has full license. Coaches used to create systems for the players and now it's like your star player is the system. The hierarchy used to be coach, star players, role players. Now it's star players, coach, role players. The coaches job now is to be a manager of egos.
