Starting Your Own Home Bakery: Is a Cottage Food Operation Right for You?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Bake Toujours Business Vlog-- Episode 1
Want to start your own home business? In this video, I am introducing Cottage food Operations. I am sharing to whom you can sell under this license and what you can sell.
It is important to know each state and each county have different regulations. In this next business series, I will be doing my best in to streamline the info on how to start your own business from home. Please realize that California tends to have some of the strictest laws and your process may be easier and more lenient. Please check with your local Environmental Heath Department for specifics on your County.

    Hi! I love that you are doing these videos and providing more information about home cottage food operations. My husband and I have discussed doing something similar for the state we live in. I found the process to be exactly how you described it... convoluted and frustrating! After going through the process to set up my LLC and meet the state requirements, I thought it would be good to help others, but I haven't quite decided how to go about it. I love your videos and have learned so much about making macarons. I started my first home business in 2004 because I didn't want to leave my babies, plus we were homeschooling. Blessings!

    Fabulous video! I’ve been thinking abt this subject a lot lately because my son wants me to do Farmers Markets with him this summer. Utah has a fair number of restrictions as well. They also inspect your home/kitchen and you have to have a food handlers permit. I’m excited to see your next video and more helpful information 😊

    I'm starting my home business in September or October! I'm so excited! I live in Texas so they don't do inspections and all you have to have is a food handlers certificate as well as follow the food Cottage Law. We're allowed to pretty much make anything as long as it doesn't spoil outside of a refrigerator. I'm making a sweets business. Candy, cookies, and cakes. Not just simple ones either, I'm going fancy with it and cultural as well as organic. I also am donating some of my profits to my city to combat against homelessness and struggling families. Oh and in Texas, you can take orders online and ship throughout Texas, it just can't go pass state lines or you'll get in trouble with the FDA. So if you live in Texas and word spreads about your home business, you can make a website and online store for your products and ship your products to anyone in Texas!

    @@baketoujours You should totally think about it! The rent is cheaper over here than in California and Texas is more laid back on it's laws. I live in the Central part and I think it's the best part of Texas. The West part of Texas is more hot, dry and more prone to drouts. The East part rains a lot and is really green, but tornadoes hit more often over there. And the South is like the west with palm trees and the occasional tropical storm and hurricanes. Of course the weather in central Texas is random, but it's way safer and affordable in my opinion.

    This video series is exactly what I'm looking for!!! I'm in LA and the list of ingredients not allowed was disheartening. Can you go over labels (do you have to put every ingredient for each macaron, or just every ingredient you use in general for you business?) Can you explain how chocolate ganaches are okay if they have heavy cream? Can you also go into how you'd list and label Amoretti compounds that you'd put in a buttercream? Also, if you come up with a new flavor, how to update your license to include new ingredients. Looking forward to hear the obstacles, challenges and over-comings you dealt with in California. Thanks again for this vlog series!

  • @baketoujours

    @baketoujours

    4 жыл бұрын

    So each product has a different label. You only have to put in the ingredients for that specific product. If you have something like Amoretti in your filling, you just put your shells ingredients list, then filling ingredidents and add all amoretti ingredients in by weight as they have on their label. As for why and how i got ganache passed, I don't know! It really is up to whoever looks at your labels. There is another mac business in pasadena with me and she got Italian meringue buttercream passed somehow and I couldn't. So some things like this are frustrating, but just take them one at a time and you can still make your product great!

    What a great vlog - thanks for all you do! I've been baking under the Ohio Cottage Food Law for several years and feeling so blessed as we don't have to obtain any licenses or pay any money. We just need to be aware of the laws and abide by them. Mostly the labeling - and they are very strict about that. But thankfully no CFO licensing ;) required!

Do you think you can go into more detail about products that can be sold? I’m really interested in selling French Macarons, cookies, and Cupcakes. But based on the restrictions listed here in Maryland it looks like I can’t (no cream cheese, buttercream, fillings, etc).

    Eryn Hines definitely no cream cheese frostings...things that go bad (not shelf stable will not be allowed). But butter based frostings are okay in California. You’ll have to check with your local area of this isn’t the case for you. You could always use shortening or vegan butters.

    At my markets I would just have my labels in a print out because people could pick and choose their flavors and I wasn't about to put 12 different labels on a box. haha So if you do a primary label with your info and then secondary label with ingredients you can get away with having one label and then asking if they want the ingredient labels as well and if they do, you can give them the entire sheet with all the products

Your input on this idea would be much appreciated!😔🙏
