I used to start with drums for my whole music production career. Now I start with sound designing a lead for melody and foundation. I felt limited with doing drums since the pattern would be similar and the fact that the melody would be a groove in the pocket of the rhythm by the drums.

thats an interesting take, i think for those that do one more than the other should experiment with the other side to be more well rounded

@@JaeFreshmendefinitely, also the deciding factor of why I start with drums is because I actually zone out and don’t hear the internal clock or metronome after a while when punching in a take. So I always either step-sequenced drums or finger-drummed.

Sometimes i start with drums, sometimes a melody. Sometimes i start with a bass line if one pops in my head. Gotta switch it up and keep it interesting/fresh

I usually start with a melody or a vocal foundation I know I’m weird but it makes bangers

I definitely agree
Starting out with drums is usually the best. And I say that as a producer who is more of a keyboardist. Tracking a melody and then adding drums can more times than not kill the vibe I had going. But if I have drums tracked first, I can track countless melodies/chords and the go with my favorite takes. But I always say there is no wrong way to create music, as long as it gets finished. Although sometimes I also statt off with keyboard/synth and create a wild intro and then work section by section until the song is finished. I also mix while Im creating. Lol. So it takes me a day or two to complete some instrumentals. I dont believe in making a bunch of beats everyday. I may go a few days without creating.

yea starting with drums definitely can lock in the groove right away, as someone that plays the piano it would help for sure to make a melody more simple thats still fire because you already have the pocket but yea producer should experiment more like a drill, and with finger drumming it can get crazy
First, although I don't really listen to or(obviously, I hope) produce hip-hop, I have learned a TON of great knowledge from your videos. I really appreciate it. Second... last I watched you, you were sitting on the floor at a coffee table, or something. This is a HUGE step up in video production and environment. Looks awesome

I use to start with drums. But now I find I like to get my sample or main idea down so I can match my drums sounds against the melody and texture.
There's a few that chop like this 🫡 I carried it over from the ASR-10 ministered. The best way to chop

Thank you!
Excellent video once again, small things you mentioned such as checking the volume when auditioning samples .So as to get a better idea how they work together with the other drum sounds .

I appreciate this video so much. I’ve always struggled with approach and find myself juts finding synth sounds and playing with synth sounds all day and never making one beat 😂
this crazy, thanks man
currently on my 2nd beat doin this this shit, shits kinda crazy nbs. good looks fam
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I have been using double time and playin drums first and man you find that groove so much more easy.
Fam is alway on point salute
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 dope for real
Bro u the best hands down ! I have question. Can u do a tutorial on how to use the sampler with creating your own sounds using it and making your own beat tags using the sampler? Thats something that alot of ppl not making tutorials on, on KZread. Ive seen videos of ppl with salt shakers, keys shaking, ect ect but they wasnt using the mpc and there were no tutorials.
Also you could start with melody/instrumenst first then make drums, then scrap original melody/instruments … leaving you with just drums … and from there start with the drums and they should be pretty dope already!
That hour lesson I had with you the other day gave me so much game for being a beginner with this mpc. You goated fr ✊🏽

That little a capella./ Vox thing you were doing while working out your hats perc part was cool. It fit. To me at least.
Start with drums if you want to be a beatmaker. Just start if you want to make music
Sequenced noise music like this first so for trap I think it’s almost essential to get your cut, you can always layer and delete! Thanks for showing your workflow man

These mf tutorials 😮💨
I just finished listening to Kanye's Bound 2 track - that had no drums, snares, nor hi hats, just chops and synths. If I wasn't listening closely, I wouldn't have noticed this. Do you know the secret to this phenomenon? Good video by the way

What's going on? I'm using the Latest MPC Software and when I'm in controller mode when I'm making a Beat! I see a Red Line come across the bottom of the Grid! And it do it often when my beat is on and when the sounds match! Why is that? I'm surprised you never talked about it. But I'm not using a standalone I'm using a MPC Touch
Dey sleeping gang wake em up do more videos on the way u sample
❤❤❤
But if I happen upon a dope sample, I’ll start there. If I don’t HAVE a sample in mind, I got my drums.

Great tutorial but everyone operates differently. Me? I listen to the sample and I listen to the drum pattern and listen to melody and then I start matching the drum patterns in my head and sound it out with the sample. Then I pick the drums and the rest is history....
I like to start baseline then drums or melody then drums. But that's just me
🫡👍🏾🫡
There is no secret sauce. Inspiration comes from everything. Could be a baseline, could be a string sample, drums, guitar keys, etc. Limiting yourself to starting with drums won't help you progress either. Say you find a really dope melody, being able to read it and program drums accordingly is vital.
Starting with Drums should be 2 in 10 times if you want to sound different and creative.
I have to disagree here. The beat is the heartbeat of the song, but the sample/instruments* are the body and the mind. A heart has to adapt to the body of the individual as the beat has to adapt to the feel of the sample. The sample will dictate what type of beat you need, that is why you should start with the sample. You could start with the beat, and spend time with a sample/instruments* that will work *Instruments: melody and harmony, in case that the producer is not a sample-based producer.
@ezskreet
19 күн бұрын
I somewhat agree….. but u can manipulate a sample to incorporate into the beat. However if you start with a sample then you have to build the beat around the sample.
@MrMakemusicmike
19 күн бұрын
I usually add drums last, so the main sound dictates everything, each main sound is journey in and of itself. But, I will say that you can come up with more drum patterns than you can get a perfect match when going drums last.

You'll live longer with being brain dead than you will having no heart beat. Music is life.

ehhh i think most producers aren't drummers so that why their approach is not that solid but the video is not about which is better but more so why its important to experiment to bring back fun and creativeness in the beatmaking process
@JaeFreshmen

@@ezskreet no way is wrong , but the point of the video just to show how to think outside of the box from the approach you normally take
Start where ever you want ain't no rules to finding you.

I thought everybody started with drums. Drums give you a rhythm to play off of
you don't have to start with drums..
@MaestroVzvet

Aaaaand?
Always. But f trap.
This really you only applies to non musicians(drum sequencers). Drums are not the heart of every song not even hip-hop, although they might carry a good amount of energy. Drums can also pigeon hole a melody and a groove, considering most drums today are made of non-natural sounds and tones.
