Starting Spawn From a Wild Oyster Mushroom
Did you know mushrooms like coffee?!?! Well, at least some of them do. Today I am going to transfer some wild oyster mushrooms that I found growing on a stump to some coffee grounds. You can also use sawdust (or other hardwood byproduct), cardboard or wheat straw. Once the mycelium spreads into the grounds or other preferred substrate, you can them use that to start mushroom logs or mushroom beds.
But remember, harvesting wild mushrooms can be dangerous so always consult a local expert before consuming anything!

Very neat video of showing it's ENTIRELY possible to coffee grounds' oyster mushrooms if as you said the grounds are sufficiently clean.

Thanks for stopping by. It's not always easy, but it isn't as hard as some people make it. Honestly, I find enough wild mushrooms, that I don't grow many anymore. I did just get some spawn for some King Oyster that I am going to try soon.

@@growinggreenways5623 I think a lot of gardening in general it down to nature. You can try to control it but nature WILL find a way. Even my indoor grow/bedroom room is changing itself!!
Excellent video. Thanks for the information.

Thanks for visiting. Not exactly the mushrooms we are interested in, though.
Mycelieum can also be produced from the caps.

You can definitely clone using the caps, but I prefer to eat those... :)
I'm using store bought oyster mushrooms. The stems are growing little baby's in just a few days.

That' awesome. I am about to get some spawn to start some experiments. It's exciting to see those little pins pop out.

I am surprised that they weren't irradiated or otherwise growth inhibited. Comes to show, you just gotta try!

I have the spawn growing all over the coffee grounds. It's completely engulfed in a white as snow mushroom roots. It smells like sweet mushrooms. Soon I will put it in the straw, and cardboard.

@Ricky Torres, That is definitely true. So much is inhibited in some way now days. I think at this point, it is not to prevent people from planting or reproducing it, but to improve the shelf life. If you can find products that won't benefit from being inhibited, then its probably usable.

Thank you very much for your informative video. Have you ever frozen the coffee grounds until you were ready to use them?

You are welcome. I have not frozen them. With my wife's coffee habit, I have never had a shortage. I can't imagine it would make a difference. Freezing draws the water out, but it should re-absorb when defrosting.
So ...how did your mushroom beds turn out? Would love to see some follow-up.

I have yet to try out the beds. I found more wild mushrooms than I needed last year foraging, so I haven't taken the time to build that setup. I am also going to try experimenting with an easier inoculation method for mushroom logs than I have done in the past, so I am hoping to try that our in the next few months. Video pending...
