    You can place the bucket with holes into a bucket without holes for the colonization. Blocks light and minimizes O2. Once it's ready to fruit, pull the bucket with holes out of the other bucket and set it in the fruiting environment. Thanks for all the helpful info!!!

    How does the generated CO2 get out and fresh air get in. Isn't this needed during colonization? In one video by grocycle i saw they put micropore tape over the holes. I was planning on doing what you mentioned but with theouter bucket having holes that align to the inner bucket (but fewer), then cover those holes in the "shield" bucket with 5 micron stick-on filter patches. Thoughts?

    Hi, loving the videos, I'm looking forward to trying this! I'm hoping to start growing my first oyster mushrooms this way very soon but I'm a little unsure of how much spawn I would need for this exact method (20 litre bucket). A lot of sources say I should use 1 - 2.3 kilograms of grain spawn per 20 litre bucket but often sellers will sell in much lower quantities (e.g. 50 g of Mushroom Spawn Seeds). Do you have any recommendations of where I can go to get the right amount? Cheers :)

    Thank you for the video! To me it seams for a small hobby single household level, hardwood or straw pellets seam to be the most convenient substrate to get. But you mention issues with compaction and air exchange with fine materials. Do you think using smaller buckets would help with the air exchange? What would you say is the smallest reasonable bucket to grow oyster mushrooms?

    I am planning on doing this soon and was wondering if can you use the spent substrate to inoculate a new bucket instead of having to keep buying grain spawn? It seems like this should be possible as long as the mycelium in the old substrate is still active. My plan is to harvest the mushrooms from the first bucket once or twice and use the substrate just like I would grain spawn for the next buckets.

  • @Yoggoth

    @Yoggoth

    7 ай бұрын

    @@johnhedge9328yes, you can. But you need to resterilize your substrate. Molds is always there, but undeveloped for some time. From Paul Stamets book: Species succession can be accomplished indoors. Here is one example. After Shiitake stops producing on logs or sawdust, the substrate can be broken apart, remoistened, resterilized, and reinoculated with another gourmet mushroom; in this case, I recommend Oyster mushrooms. Once the Oyster mushroom life cycle is completed, the substrate can be again sterilized, and inoculated with the next species. Shiitake, Oyster, King Stropharia, and finally Shaggy Manes can all be grown on the same substrate, increasingly reducing the substrate mass, without the addition of new materials. The majority of the substrate mass that does not evolve into gases, is regenerated into mushrooms. The conversion of substrate mass-to-mushroom mass is mind boggling. These concepts are further developed in Chapter 22.

    They basically made a video doing experiments on this idea, "using mushroom substrate as spawn" kzread.info/dash/bejne/aY56qtJ8nqrKf5M.html. Basically he says you can reuse substrate like you suggest, but the yields vs your fresh substrate inputs get worse and the mycelium starts to get sick/lose energy, and you should at most reuse substrate like once, maybe twice. Its an interesting video.

    @@GroCycleTV I assume you're usig straw then the hole size should be ok I'm using sawdust and straw like stuff because I get it for free (wheat hulls straw rests etc. ) because thats smaller it would break loose easier. At the moment I did just a test with cold pasteurization in bahs which worked pretty well but the strain of oyster that Icloned from the wild because it seemed so strong didn't fruit in all tries before (sterilized and other mediums). Now after 10 or so attempts I found how to make it fruit finally, but it grows strange as if it got way to high CO2. Looks more looks like a Trumpet than an oyster mushroom. Many stems wit just a tiny cap that is white in the middle.... Very strange.... And no its not because high CO2 I tried mor air exchange, different humidity and different temperature. Maybe my culture is just to old. Tried for 3 years to get it fruiting at all. Now I found the reason why it didn't fruit but now it doesn't grow as its supposed to do.... Will probably dismiss this strain even its growing exceptionally strong and quickly mycelium but getting it to fruit and then fruit correctly is pretty hard to do.

    Does anyone have an opinion or data on the yield of this method vs the yield of grow bags methods (either sawdust or sawdust+soy hulls)?

  • @celticlass8573

    @celticlass8573

    Жыл бұрын

    IMO the benefit to doing the bucket method is that it's much lower waste, because the bucket is reusable and the bags are not, and the secondary is that over time, because you won't be purchasing the bags anymore, you save money. I like the bucket method because of this, though I have grown many in blocks as well. The ones I've grown in bags, if the blocks have had a few flushes I like to revitalize them by putting them in a bucket with either straw or chips, and they will recolonize and I get a decent yield from the "spent" blocks. 😊 I also reached out to one of my local businesses, and they gave me the buckets that bulk nut butter comes in, for free. I also combine that with colonizing grain in jars rather than grain bags, so that cost is nominal as well.

    @@celticlass8573 thank you for the reply. Did you find any differences in the yield per space utilised when growing in buckets vs bags? I am considering the different methods, and lower costs and waste are definitely an advantage, I agree. I want to know the trade off. Why are bags still popular in this case? Yield must be different...

  • @celticlass8573

    @celticlass8573

    Жыл бұрын

    @@anirshadchowdhury9653 The yield is quite similar by volume of substrate. It shouldn't be any different, when you think about it, a block is a block, if all the prep is the same. As for why people still use bags to grow mushrooms, I believe it's because it's convenient, and they don't want to bother with washing the buckets. The buckets take up more space than bags do, but the buckets have the capacity of producing more than one mushroom at a time. Definitely experiment and see what works best for you. 😊

    Very low contamination rate growing like this. Oysters grow very happily on 100% straw substrate, which contains much higher Nitrogen and mineral levels than sawdust, meaning supplementation is not necessary to get good yields.

    Aside from the pasteurisation moment, this method seems to have none of the focus on sterile handling that the other methods have. Letting the pasteurised back drip out outdoors, just hosing the bucket down with gardenhose water etc. Is it because oyster mushrooms are just tougher against contamination?
