5 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Growing Mushrooms For A Living | GroCycle
Here are 5 of the main lessons I've learnt after more than a decade growing mushrooms for a living.
The 5 lessons are:
1) You don't need to grow mushrooms using sterile techniques (low tech methods work well)
2) It's easier to source your spawn from a supplier (instead of making it yourself)
3) Growing mushrooms is really labour intensive (start small and scale up once you know what is involved)
4) Selling food can be more difficult than growing it (focus as much time on selling your produce as you do growing it)
5) It's difficult to grow mushrooms as a full-time business (unless you incorporate value-added products like mushroom grow kits, workshops/courses, or charitable activities)

"I started growing mushrooms around about 2007-" Sir that was the year I was born and now here I am trying to learn how to grow them because the first time I ate a mushroom it totally changed my life. Thank you so much for sharing this video.
This hit my heart. As a small scale producer of specialty fats, these lessons you share are pretty close to the same advice i would give to artisans no matter what they make. Know your customers and work backwards to your actual production needs. Don't assume scale is better. Reliable income can be small scale and gives more joy and less complications.

With so much clutter full of sales pitches and advertorial driven focus, it is genuinely refreshing coming across HONEST information spoken from the heart that is both informative and helpful. When your workshops eventually open up and we can travel from Australia (yes, another Aussie commenting on here), I'm looking forward to one of your face to face workshops. I don't feel you put me off growing mushrooms, rather, you helped me have realistic expectations and thoughts to ponder :)
#4 is my absolute biggest frustration with watching all of the 'grow' or 'ranch' videos. No one tells you how to get customers. Only how to grow, which I can learn pretty quickly. Thank you for acknowledging that.
You are a man of value....don't loose your grip champ......i am Botswana most importantly am on earth
I've grown mushrooms on and off as a hobby over the years: indoors, outdoors - logs, strictly sterilised environments... more recently straw from the duck cage - it can be a crap shoot; varieties can be picky. I've dumped failed spawn at the edge of the woods and it took, when wouldn't do anything under all the indoor complexities. It's an adventure. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for taking the time out to give very valuable advice, My wife and I run a mushroom farm here in Thailand mainly different varieties big oyster mushrooms. Number 4 advice we have managed to obtain many customers to sell too, best flush we had was 400 kilo in 36 hours, we did not get much sleep but we did manage too offload all the mushrooms we even had to go to a night market that started around 2am in the morning to sell the last lot. It's good fun and hard work but we'll worth it.

Thank you. I've been into gardening now for about 5 years. I've learned GOBS about gardening in those 5 years. Unfortunately, most of what I've learned, I learned the hard way. I just went out and tried things. I think I've made most of the common mistakes that gardeners make. Now, I want to grow mushrooms. I decided to learn about it from people like you first and hopefully avoid some of the common mistakes. I appreciate the information you shared.

Wish we had more of you here, especially in Tennessee! I'm building a multiroom greenhouse to give mushroom growing a go. I'm retired and love mushrooms. You're such a genuine and honest man. Great video! Loved every second. You Good Man! May God bless you more and more!
One of the best, most informative videos I have ever seen on KZread. Thank you for your time and passion!
You're living the life mate! This is the stuff my dreams are made of! The experimentation is likely the most exciting part of cultivation! Wished I had the ability to do so, I certainly have the aptitude but yeah, life just won't allow for it at present... Anyway, keep up the epic work, particularly in inspiring others to get involved, it's so incredibly rewarding! PS. producing spawn is not always time consuming, with some thriving Liquid Culture and grain buffered with coffee (instant or ground) and gypsum powder, you're looking at 100% colonization at about the 2-3 week mark when kept in the ideal conditions. LC for the win. I swear by the stuff! Spores just take too long but are if course a great option for long-term storage. Another tip I picked up for super fast colonization / propagation is to let either core cuttings, spores or LC mycelium grow out on agar and then squirt distilled water into the dish, give it a good shake, suck it all up and squirt that solution into your LC. You'll have so much mycelium you wont know how to use it all =D
So very kind of you to share your decade long knowledge. Greetings from Spain :)
You are a fantastic person and you deserve many blessings for this video. Can't thank you enough

Thank you for shearing your experiences and knowledge
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. Just putting a summary for time pinched people. But I recommend watching the whole thing for full context. 1) You can grow in non-sterilized medium/substrate, done waste time on sterilization. Learn about pre-sterilized substrate like coffee grounds 2) Its easier to buy spawn/spores from a supplier rather than growing yourself 3) Growling Mushrooms at scale is really labor intensive, not like hobby growing. So start at lower scale 20kg/week and see if you can scale up 4) Selling food can be more difficult than growing it. Difficult to get a market so get buyers lined up before growing. 5) Its difficult to grow mushrooms as a full time business. Need to augment with other businesses like mushroom kits, courses etc
have to say, I was completely mesmerized by the woods, and their beauty.

May I just say that I am in total sync with you. Ok, I'm now 68 and you look a lot younger and have the opportunity (time wise) to achieve your goals. I was very impressed by your video, not just because you seem to have sorted your business out to a large degree), but because you have shared it with others, giving them a chance to judge for themselves whether to get involved in a venture such as this, whereas otherwise they would not have felt it possible to advance to the beginning. From personal experience, I spent most of my childhood on a farm, both horticultural and agricultural, and since about 40 years ago have been trying to get back into that lifestyle. As the years have passed, I have found that sheep run faster than me, as does my wife, digging has become more strenuous, and the prospect of farming has become more remote. I now live on a busy main road which is a great opportunity for me to sell produce on the roadside. I would really like some more detailed advice as to how to produce mushrooms from scratch. If this is not available from you, then I can fully understand, and I wish you well with your endeavours. Warmest regards

Some top class advice. Thanks, it has given me some things to think about.
Mushrooms can be very profitable depending on where you live. I started up in Vietnam and Bali. Growing Oysyers and snails on small 1 acre lots. I found the best places were to upscale or medium upscale buffets. Especially to like these big fancy hotel buffets. They would pretty much buy everything. Plus labor is cheaper so I just watches the operation. Gave me more time to shake hands and take samples to smaller places with a chef I had hired to do demonstrations on the product.
This video saved me hours of time each week. Thx x
Great information- I appreciate the share. I have also passed it on to other mushroom groups that I am a part of. I might end up doing your online course too.
Thank you for the honesty! I’ve been thinking of starting a micro greens business and I think it is very good advice to know first how much demand you will have before beginning trying to scale and keeping expectations realistic of how much one is going to make running a small scale produce business! Luckily I won’t have to sell so much to live comfortably and I know it’s not the situation for everyone. Thanks again!

That was a great, explanatory video. Thank you so much :) My husband bought me one of your kits for Christmas and I love it. I started it straight away, then the really cold weather came along (I'm in the U.K.).My mushrooms froze solid but I kept on with it and as soon as the frost and snow went, they started growing and we soon had a crop. We got three crops all together and the mushrooms (oyster) were delicious. Now the pack is in the garden, under a tree and I'm hoping something will happen there. Maybe they will like it there and talk to the trees. I need to check that out with your other videos, perhaps? Anyway, thanks for a great idea, allowing novices like me to have such fun and make delicious meals :)
This video was most enlightening. I has permitted me to better assess my interest in the mushroom business and to understand the the associated risk. Thank you.
