    Not every horse you train is going to be easy. It makes it all more worth the while when you take the first ride, or pick up the first hoof. Your an amazing horse trainer, and I can tell so much work has gone into Zara in the past couple months. She’s going to be a great horse one day. (She already is!)

Been following for probably more than two years at this point, from the first project horse to now. I love the channel, the horses, the dog, you, and everything you do. I know you can’t keep Zara, but know that during the hardship you are going through with her, I am encouraging both of you and so proud of everything you guys have accomplished ❤🫶🏻💕

    I love how thoughtful you are! I love using R+ to encourage curiosity, but I do think longterm R- allows them to feel like they control the pressure and their scary surroundings. Obviously, you know best because your hands are in her. I just love NePoPo concepts. Apply pressure, release pressure and mark at the same time. They learn the pressure is the cue, learn how to turn it off (empowering) and gain the reward. This pattern is 100% how we teach picking up feet. Pressure is asking for their foot, then holding. Reward is the release + food. I could nerd out on this forever. This is a dog training system developed by Bart Bellon, but it is applicable across the board. Seriously ,so cool. The more you learn, the more you realize you don’t know.

    I think I often train with combined reinforcement! Sounds similar to what you’re describing! I think a lot of “+r” falls into -r with a reward to mark behavior. I think it’s hard to be a purist with +r! I think the main thing for me is keeping her as relaxed and under threshold while she learns new behaviors. Have you heard of Lockie with emotional horsemenship? I took his course “when to reward, for what?” And that really opened my mind!!

    One of my horses has similar issues with eyes. Coincidentally, he's a sorrel with a blaze and looks a lot like Zara. If I get behind on brush hogging pastures and he has his face down in tall grass and weeds, that's when the eye issues pop up. If I don't address it when an indicator like a little weeping starts, an infection will follow. Now I just prophylactically treat it with Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment and all's good - no worsening of symptoms or infections.

    I find it very interesting, when you said that so many horses have ligament issues due to tying them up on a rope halter and the consequence of not being able to break loose. I live in Europe and we use rope halters here too, but ONLY for training. we would never ever tie up a horse on a rope halter due to the fact that there is no pre-determined breaking point within the tack - so the breaking point will be within the horse :( we use halters for tying up horses and even when you buy a rope halter in most shops, part of the product description is, to never tie a horse up when it is wearing one, that's what stable halters are for. due to the way they are constructed they will (or should, of course accidents can happen, no matter what) break. I always cringe really hard when I watch American equestrians tying up their horses on a rope halter, as it just does not seem to be a thing over there... we are all socialized differently, that is ok, but that's what I appreciate about the non-existance of borders in the internet. you can exchange ideas and learn so much from people from all over the world. I really appreciate that you are so thoughtful to use an additional tool which helps your horse break loose if it is tied up, even though that does not seem to be a big thing in your environment which shows how much you care about your horses. and congrats to your progress with zara, it's amazing. I am sure she very well knows how much you care about her too 💗

    That is so interesting that culturally we're so different! I feel like in the non-mustang world many people don't use rope halters! But do when they teach tying. I'm happy to hear that (sounds like) you're more ethical or careful across the sea! The mustang training world can be very rough - and I think there's always an unrealistic timeline because of the 100 day makeovers. I hard tied my first mustang Zurreal and she pulled back constantly.. I thought thats just how you teach them because thats what I saw around me. I feel so bad looking back 😣 I'm just trying to learn from it all and do better as I go!

    @@GypsyEquestrian thanks a lot for your answer! this is exactly what matters, you are looking back and trying to learn. we all make mistakes, the important thing is, to reflect on what we are doing and try to improve. 🤩 overall, I'd say in theory europe, resp. the eu is a little bit more advanced when it comes to animal rights... we banned testing of cosmetic products on animals, we banned ear cropping / tail ducking on dogs, etc. ages ago.... these examples are great steps forward, and I am happy that we have those laws, but in my opinion, it only works in theory. if someone wants to have a cropped dog, they just cross the border to a non-eu country and let it be done there, which is totally legal. and the recent scandals in very high profile dressage and show jumping stables show, that money oftentimes leads to inhumane training practices over here, in a really gross extense from my pov. in the end, it is important that we as individuals think about our ethics in regards to the animals or pets who we spend our time with. so happy that you are back with your mustang vids, I can really take a lot from it 🥰

    For a horse that knows how to tie and isn't pulling back, but pulling out, you can do an extra wrap or two on the fence to make the resistance a little harder. Have you tried that? You can also practicing standing tied with rewarding her for being there. Or give her a hay net when she's tied to make it more enjoyable. I do both of those things with Zara.

So I don’t really get the targeting part of your training, I can see how you use for picking up her feet, and for when she had her allergies but I don’t really get it for the future. Like What’s it going to be for, what are you going to use it for? I get some of it but for the other half it just seems kind of useless. (Sorry if that last part sounded rude but I don’t know how to word it)

    No worries! Good question! I love to ask the "why" behind things too! So for a mustang teaching them to target their their shoulder, or butt, or knees, eyes etc.. gives them the control to initiate contact versus us always forcing them to be touched. But after that trust is built, targeting is so useful for positioning a horse at the mounting block, or along a fence, or moving them over in the trailer, it helps with teaching the side pass, or body control and body awareness under saddle. You'll see as the series goes on some things that show how useful it is!

    I really think you should keep her. I had a mustang that I kept till her passing. She had been trained, resold ( to a good owner). Trained, resold again, bed, resold again and again, until finally the day I found her emaciated and covered in rain rot. She was in her mid 20s when I got her, and was quick to get back to health. She was an incredible trail horse, then I retired her from riding and she had a peaceful death ( I mean as peaceful as any horse death can be). I'm just saying as someone who has owned senior and physically, emotionally problematic horses by choice, please PLEASE, everyone, don't sell your horses unless you absolutely have to. The children's book "black beauty' is absolutely a true description of a horse who passed through life from owner to owner. Except it usually doesn't end that well.

    Isn’t it pretty dangerous to tie the lead rope around you when working with her feet and such? It wouldn’t be good if Zara got spooked and took off and you get dragged and couldn’t release yourself.

  • @GypsyEquestrian

    @GypsyEquestrian

    You are right that would be really dangerous, but it is not tied on me. If you look at it it's looped over my belt so if she pulled away it would just come off 🙌🏻
