Starting our tuktuk adventure in Negombo Sri Lanka | driver license | Sri Lanka with kids part 1
This summer we took our 4 foster kids to the island of Sri Lanka self driving 2 tuktuks! An adventure that would lead us to seeing loads of animals, visiting gorgeous temples, driving through tea plantations, snorkeling in search of sea turtles, eating great food, witnessing the most amazing festival... and above all meeting a lot of amazing people. In this series... our story!

@@arewethereyet000 I can imagine! I would really like to see Sri Lanka for myself, but videos will have to do for now...
This looks the start of a wonderful adventure. It never occurred to me that hiring a Tuk Tuk might be a possibility. I had to cancel a trip to Sri Lanka due to Covid but will now watch your trip with interest before re-booking any alternative.

Hello...I am happy to found your channel. We have 15 nights in august and sre thinking about renting a tuk tuk. But our children are 10 and 13. So I am not sure about how comfortable it is...especially on longer routes. Our stopps would ve Negombo/Sigiriya and up to Kandy. Is this doable all the curves with our heavy weight and the backpacks?🤷♀️🙈 Than train to Ella, Arugam Bay, Yala, Hiriketiya and from there I would take taxi. Because in 15 nights is too heavy. What do you think? Tuktukrental says no problem....🤣🙈...as always in Asia. I am not sure about the route and the weight in the mountains. Did you have problems with your weight or with the space for backpacks? Thanks do much Andrea

3 people in back would work but consider packing very light then. The weight is doable, I think. We loved driving the tuktuks and being on the road in general. If this is your thing: go for it! I still miss our tuktuks and would love to use it anywhere in the world. If you need a discount code: Arewethereyet 😉

@@arewethereyet000 oh thank you! Normally we have two 55 l and two 35 l backpacks with us. Yes but maybe we should pack a bit lighter...🙈 Do you have experience, what distance most is doable with the kids in one day? I am not sure about distance around 130 to 160 km...🤷♀️ Negombo/Sigiriya or Ella/Arugam Bay. Arugam Bay/Yala. Do you made this in one day?

@@79andream How long your kids can enjoy the tuktuk depends of course. The trick is to search driving time on google maps and multiply it by 2. This never failed us. I believe the longest we did was about 100 km.

@@arewethereyet000absolutely and in sri lanka ther e are plenty of places to stop and refresh. Weight would be a problem going up steep back roads . my wife is 120kg and tuk tuk had no problem
This sounds amazing. We have also 6 and 8 years old girls and would like to travel around Sri Lanka. Do you think, with a tuk tuk is it doable? For example from Colombo to the East Cost? How safe is it to drive tuk tuk such a long distance with children? Thanks for your feedback :)
@arewethereyet000

I feel that is very doable! The traffic is different then in the western world. We got used to it after about 2 days. We never felt really unsafe except for the first few hours. Maybe avoid Colombo en Kandy the first days and leave from Negombo, a smaller city next to the AirPort. If you need to calculate how long you will be driving multiply the time of Google Maps by 2. Have fun planning your trip! Of you need a discount code: Arewethereyet ! Any more questions? Shoot!

@@arewethereyet000 Thank you so much for the great tips and your answer. Yes, I think definitely we will go for renting a tuk tuk and I will use your discount code. I have started to watch all your videos, they are just great and match perfectly how we like to plan our trip. I would like also attend Prehera festival. Which accommodation have you preferred? Do you recommend or shall we find another alternative? I agree I read everywhere we should start from Negombo. Do you have an accommodation recommendation in Negombo? Shall we completely skip Colombo or 1-2 days would be nice to stay. We will be in Sri Lanka for 1 month starting mid August. Many thanks in advance for your feedback!

@@selinisilwerner8542 Happy you like the video’s! Some extra info: for the Perahera I would recommend hotel Kasamara. It is more expensive but the parade passes by and you can book tickets through them. In case you prefer a cheaper hotel (like we did) maybe check Booking.com? Ours was ok but not that great. You can still book tickets at Kasamara. Our hotel in Negombo was Bivora villa and we liked it. We liked Colombo, we stayed for 1,5 day and enjoyed it. We are a family that enjoys busy asian cities, though.
