I’m not sure how confident I am because it’s one of the best, most competitive dance programs in the US but seeing your video and the other has helped me to feel that even if I don’t get in, it’s not the end of my dance career and I can keep trying and working hard until I succeed, so thank you for this! I always wanted to start dance but was too critical of myself and thought I would do terrible and fail. I proved myself wrong though! There is nothing that will make you work harder than when you are passionate about something. Dance is always my passion and refuge. Thank you for sharing! It is amazing how many people are starting to realize that you do not need to start dancing when you are two or three years old. If your heart tells you to work hard for something, go for it! Hey. I was in the exact same position. When I started a dance school my mum could only afford 1 class per week. I understand what you mean but I wouldn’t say it is impossible! I think if you’re learning on your own focus on your turnout and posture... once you have these at a good level then everything else in ballet will become easier and more understandable. What class are you taking at your studio at the moment? You’ll be surprised at how much you can improve on your own even if you do pick up tiny bad habits on the way. Don’t feel too stressed about it and keep working hard! I know exactly how you feel because that was me when I was 13 but it really is possible!

    It’s no problem! Jazz used to be the only class I took at week too. I know what you mean but don’t get yourself down about it there is a lot that jazz can teach you. I think it’s good that you’re in the studio at least once a week. If I were you I’d keep training my ballet at home because it really will help you! You’ll be surprised at the level you will be at when you get yourself into a ballet class. Try and do some research about posture and placement when doing ballet. It will help a lot. Good Luck Natalia! I know you are going to be amazing because you certainly have the passion and drive to achieve anything you set your mind to! 💞

    When i was around 11 or 12, i went to this dance school where the teacher had favourites, and then the ones she didn't like. She thought that if you came in bad you would leave bad. I was a bit younger, so i couldn't bare the shouting and embarrsemet. i found it hard to remember the dance. i have learning diffitals (and still do). but there was always a dancer in me ready to come out. Even though i didn't fit in and hated the dance teacher, i stayed. Eventualy it all got too much and i left. she didn't see anything in me so i was always put in the back and if i asked for help she would never give it too me. I didn't go back to dance for a long time. because i thought i was bad. for the longest time i thought was a bad dancer. But then one day, around 3 years later, my mum found another dance studio. and now I'm doing things in dance i never thought i could do! Somethings i can still hear her voice in my head, and mess up, but i try not too. even though its hard sometimes. to this day I'm still building my confidents in dance. but i love it the moral of the story is that there is going to be people that put you down, but no matter what they say and do, you will have the strength to keep on going. Even if it takes 3 years. :)

    I honestly know exactly what you mean. Teachers shouldn't have favourites because that just means they aren't doing their job correctly. Especially when you pay them to teach you. I'm sorry you had to go through this but I am glad that things are better in your new studio! The people that surround you really do make a difference in your dance ability and confidence. Thank you so much for sharing your inspirational story! I wish you all the best for your future :)

    Exactly one year ago I watched Don Quixote ballet and fell in love with this amazing art. I had been in ballet from 6 to 8 years old but then I quit because I was fat shamed by my classmates, and after a few months of home training (in the safest way because I didn't want to break my ankles doing professional things) I decided to join another ballet school in September at 14 years old. Sometimes it's difficult because you see younger girls doing better than you and acting like they're all principal dancers (really annoying behaviour) but if you constantly remember why you're doing it and you work hard, soon or later you will see the results and maybe get at a high level of ballet (that is what I'm working for). Thank you so much for this video, you are an amazing dancer! Keep going❤

    Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful story. You're right - ignore those who pull you down (even though this is really hard!) and keep working hard because you will see improvement. I had the same when I started dancing at 14 - so many girls in my class looked down on me and I can't lie this really did affect my confidence. Gratefully with strength I was able to ignore and push through. I became not just stronger, but I proved to myself that I'm a humble dancer with incredible skills and would never make another dancer feel the way I was made to feel. wishing you all the best for your future as a dancer!

    I did dance (mainly jazz but I also did lyrical, hip hop, and ballet) from when I was 6 to 11 and had to quit due to Covid. Now I’m 14 and I really wanted to start ballet up again so about a month and a half ago I signed up for a pre professional ballet company. I was super nervous cause I am the oldest and tallest in my class but I’ve decided to get into the mindset that the classes are just for training to help me improve and the real thing I can focus on is preforming! So I auditioned for the nutcracker and got in! I’m a soldier, lady in waiting, and Russian dancer. I thought I’d for sure be noticeably the oldest and tallest because all the girls my age and older are already doing the pointe roles that I have to wait a year to be able to do but going into the rehearsals there’s quite a few girls my height and age so I’m super excited! I plan to at least do ballet until the end of high school and see what I’ll be able to do with ballet in college and moving on to adult hood (not planning to become a professional or anything just seeing how I’ll have time do do classes and preforming and things like that) but yeah! If you’re thinking about starting dance no matter what style like this video said just do it I know it’s going to be so worth it in the end :)

I used to stretch regularly at home to build my flexibility and then I began with technical jazz as a style because I didn’t know anything about styles to know where to start. I recommend you do a range of styles if you can, definitely ballet! But maybe look into doing ballet, jazz and contemporary to build a range of skills then you can choose which is best for you or stick to all if you love them all! It’s no problem! What style of dance do you do now? I believe that you’ll be able to do contemporary dance... when I began I didn’t start contemporary training until I was 16 and it just clicked, I knew that style was for me. Your flexibility will definitely help you if you do start as well! Aww thank you 🥰 I’m glad I’ve been able to help you!! Yes I definitely think you can become a good contemporary dancer even if you start now. I have no doubt at all! Yeah here are some tips I know would have helped me: - Strength is really important; you need to be able to hold your own weight. Some contemporary floor exercises can help you build upper body strength. Ballet exercises can help build leg strength. - Usually in contemporary you’re told to let go. When you’re dancing the style just relax and let go. Allow your body to feel the movement. - Control is underrated but important. It’s important to be able to let go but control the movement you do. This comes from understanding your body, watching the way you move after you’ve danced (or in the mirror), and finding when to fully let your body take over and when to control the movement you’re doing. I hope these help! They would have helped me when I began 🤍

    I started dancing at 6 and quit at 8, and realized that was the worst decision I’ve made, and regret it now. Dance was actually my passion, but I know I’m “too late” to go back. When I was 12 I decided to join dance again, and tried auditioning for a competition team even though I lost all my experience in dance, and did hiphop as my main style. I’m 14 now and I’ll say I’ve improving a little, but not as good as other girls who are more advanced then me who are the same age. I started to dance to more styles.

If you're too nervous for class straight away take some online classes and see if they help. You shouldn't regret it because when you were 6 you didn't know that you wanted to be a hip-hop dancer so don't blame yourself. Don't worry about if people are better than you! I started hip hop in October 2019 and I was 11 at the time. I was put into a beginner class and I went in all excited but as soon as I walked in I was disappointed and my confidence shattered. I was put in a class with kids who were 6-9 (I know it's not a big deal but at the time it felt like a huge deal) I would come home every time and cry because they were younger and were better. I thought everyone was judging me but I soon realized no one cared if I was bad they were all super nice and just wanted to be friends. I began to feel more comfortable dancing in front of them. A little over a year later I do hip hop, modern, jazz, and ballet. I am very good at hip hop actually I was invited to a master hip hop class and I am very excited! I learned pretty quickly and I'm sure you will too because you are 15, you understand things quicker than a 12 year old does.

    This video really inspired me because I started dancing when I was 11 and I’m 12 now I got on pointe within two months of dancing and after around eight months my mom took me out because we were starting to move and I’ve been out for a really long time so I’m starting to lose a lot of my flexibility and I’m training in my bedroom every day I’m doing stretch routines but sometimes I just feel it’s not enough and if anybody has tips on landing just like basic first position jumps and stuff I could really use them are used to be so good just for the little experience I had because I self taught myself and my grandma went to Juilliard and danced and did magazines and stuff so I really looked up to her so any help or criticism would be needed in the comments and I’m really just starting to get discouraged.

    Hey Alanna! I'd love to know whether you carried on self-teaching yourself at home or if you went to a dance school. It sounds like you're naturally gifted! I completely understand what you mean; it's hard to train yourself without criticism. I personally recommend possibly following KZread tutorials in ballet and/or try find somewhere where you can take class. You could alternatively film yourself so you can watch back and criticise yourself. If you know what you need to work on technically then you're definitely on the right path for growth and improvement. If it makes you feel better; I did not ballet training until I was 16! I managed to get onto pointe at 17. I believe my stretching/ training in other styles at home assisted my ballet technique well! You've got this!

    Same story!!! I totally get it, Dance is something you generally start at age 2, age 4, age 5. There are even girls who might try ballet at an early age, but eventually quit, I was one of those people🙋‍♀️. My first class ever was when I was 3, I quit when I was 7. Iv'e always thought from time to time what it may have been like if I had stuck with it. I went through a bumpy transition at first, but got better at it, Our stories are pretty similar!

Now I'm 19 and I would be able to go to a dance school in the next bigger town but I'm scared of being bad and especially of not fitting into the group. It's a beginner's class for people aged 15 and up but I'm still scared of being too bad and too old. There are surely also people older than 15 but I'm just so nervous about sticking out that it has kept me from signing up..

    When I started at my first dance school the smaller children were dancing better than I was... I know exactly how you feel and it's terrifying! The difference is a 15 year old that has been dancing since they were 3 compared to you who hasn't fortunately been given the same opportunity. What you'll find is your passion and dedication to push through and improve (for you) will push you higher than you ever expected and older than you or not if you're dancing with someone who possibly has more technique or flexibility as you, you will improve and at some point be on that level. I know how scary it is a believe me I still sometimes feel nervous to take classes but if you really had the heart to be a dancer you will fly through it and feel so proud of yourself that you did it! I definitely recommend! Keep me updated and let me know if you go!

    This was so inspirational for me. I’m 13 and has been taking a dance class at a community center for about 3 years. I really want to get to a high level and improve my technique and become at least decent at ballet. I’m actually very worried right now, because right now I’m en pointe but my teacher isn’t correcting my technique at all, I don’t even have a turnout or proper training and I’m worried I’m going to have problems in the future. I already asked my parents if I could attend a formal ballet class, my mom does not approve because she says there’s nothing wrong with how my teacher is teaching me. My dad does approve my decision and says I can start looking for a school and start classes soon. My mom doesn’t get that I could get injuries in the future and says that I just spend too much time on the internet reading crap and that I should just continue classes with my current teacher. Does anyone have any advice?

  • @KirstyWilson

    @KirstyWilson

    I'm really glad! You're completely right to worry. Dancing en pointe is terrifying and can be even more so if you feel like your teacher doesn't regard your safety. If you're still in a position where you are en point but do not feel safe don't be scared to go to flats again to simply work on your technique and strength. Pointe work is incredible but unless you have nailed the fundamentals; turnout, core strength, it won't actually do a lot for your technique as a ballerina. Thats my opinion anyway. It's been 1 year since you commented this, I hope you're well - did you ever find a formal ballet school?

    First of all I think it’s amazing that you’re going to be on pointe at 15! I know exactly how you feel! I felt really discouraged at your age because I believed that everyone was better than me! I think the best thing you can do is focus on yourself and building your own confidence. You have to believe in yourself before anyone else can believe you can do it When I was 16-19 I saw massive improvement in my dancing so I don’t think you should worry about running out of time. Keep working hard and you will see improvement. Also with flexibility, I would recommend stretching as much as you can. It’s something that will get better over time so it’s best to try and stretch even just a little everyday! I wish you the best of luck with your training!! 💫

    Hi!! I am 17 and am extremely passionate about starting and becoming a beautiful dancer :) However, (this is just a worrisome what if question) I am worried about the time I will have to put into training, which means time that will be lost with my family. How did you keep your relationships healthy with your family while training at full force? This is my greatest fear: worrying about what other people think and having to sustain “all of my relationships” and not spend too much time on myself. BUT! I love dance!!! So, how does that balance out??

  • @KirstyWilson

    @KirstyWilson

    2 ай бұрын

    Hey! Family is so important and I love how much you hold your relationships close! If I'm going to be completely honest with you - dance took over my life from the age of 16 to 21 and I don't necessarily regret it. My relationships within my family are stronger now than they have ever been and it never really caused issues between us. Quite frankly I have never really thought about how much time I didn't spend with them until you asked this question. My advice to you is to organise your time wisely. Learn when is best to prioritise family time and then time on your own/ dancing. It might take a little while and you need to make sure you don't burn yourself out in the process but it is definitely possible to be able to have an abundance of both in your life. Also in the moments when you are spending time with family make sure you're present and enjoying their company. If you're going to spend time with them think about the quality of time you have with them and not just the quantity of how long you're spending. If any of that makes sense? I hope my advice is useful - you got this!

  • @KirstyWilson

    @KirstyWilson

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey. I think during lockdown we have to make the most of what we have. I try to make sure I do a stretch everyday and practice some basic technical stuff like turns and leaps. Tumbling is one of those things where the more you do it the more confident you’ll be. If you have enough space you can practice at home on carpet or on grass if you can. I recommend you try a tumbling or acrobatics class because you’re more likely to learn more tricks safely that way. To do leg extensions I usually stretch first sitting in all splits with blocks (or a chair) to overstretch my split. Then I’ll practice leg holds leaning on the wall. When I feel warm enough I work on extending my legs without holding them to build strength. You can also do this leaning on the wall or standing off the wall. It’s no problem. I hope this helps!!

    First of all... Did you move to Canada? and I don't necessarily think you need flexibility to be a 'good dancer'. Dance is so expensive! I was self taught for 1 year are home before I finally convinced my mother to pay for 1 jazz class a week. I believe ballet and tap is something you can learn at home. There are so many resources online, follow-along classes, and sometimes free zoom-style workshops. With at-home-training there comes a little more research. I think it to be beneficial to watch others dance so you're able to witness technique from other dancers. Also, leaning about what is important within each style of dance for example: ballet is all about posture/ the way in which you hold yourself and your turnout - learn how to master then you are guaranteed great ballet technique. Maybe you could possibly try and take 1 ballet class where a teacher could point out your strengths and weaknesses then who you're teaching yourself at home you know what you must focus on?

    Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus. If you have any questions let me know Xx
