Starting Calligraphy - Posture

Before even picking up a pen to write with, there are three things you need to familiarise yourself with, Posture, Placement and Position.
Sitting correctly, Posture, dramatically increases the effectiveness of not only the practise of calligraphy but the enjoyment of the practise.
Good posture is critical is to good practise and it allows the practitioner a good, general overview of the writing sheet, increases the capacity for good breathing, and this in turn assists with smoothness of writing allowing for the regulation of even, consistent, unrushed forms.
This video looks at the relationship of the feet, shins, thighs and back and how that influences the chest and shoulder muscles.
The relationship of the desk-height to the chair-height is also taken into consideration and is shown clearly in the video, allowing for a calligraphy more enjoyable, but more importantly, less stressful on the neck, shoulders and back. The video is suitable for both right-handers and left-handers.
This is one in a series of three, combine them all to assist you and really enjoying learning calligraphy.

    I have discovered you through a video on Happy Ever Crafter. Being one and seventy years of age, I have obviously been practicing my art for many years. I'm honing what I do know and find this channel to be an excellent teacher. When I was seven, my teacher told the class to use me as an example of good posture. It is an important asset for all activities. One is never too old to learn and you are a shining example to follow in improving upon what you know and also what you have never had an opportunity to do. Thank you Paul for your expert advice.

    Best posture breakdown I've seen. I went through this whole phase where I would run into the same problem over and over again, where my pen would just get all wobbly. At first I thought it was a problem with round upstrokes. Took much, much longer than it should have for me to figure out that my problem was that I habitually stopped breathing when writing lines, and my hand was weakening from the lack of oxygen.

    This posture is actually applicable to everyone, not just to calligraphers. I tend to write a lot in my studies, and my i start developing back pain very soon after three to four hours of writing. Though i have to say, it was very challenging to keep the posture.... >

I have been reading every book on it i can get my hands on and not a single one has been this detailed on the importance of posture. I love this. I really don't mind starting with seemingly trivial instructions. How to sit, what angle the paper should be at on the table, what angle I should sit at, how to actually move the pen across the paper, etc. I recently just figured out how to run (do what?). I had been running on my heels for years. I was never corrected, even when I went into the Marines. Do you know how bad the shin splints I got were? Bad. I thought it was because I wasn't stretching enough after a run. My endurance still improved, but boy oh boy did I pay for it.

  • @PAScribe

    @PAScribe

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question, it is a combination of both. The thing you have to be aware of is when you are writing a letter, it is the STROKE you are working on that is the focus, not where were you are going to i.e. look at the tip of the nib and look to the line you are aiming for when you start the next part of the letter it is the same. Don’t start the letter but look at the END of the letter or the balance will be thrown off.

    Great instructions, but you sir are definitely lacking in your biology knowledge. A hip flexor is a group of muscles, not one. The gluteus maximus is actually the largest muscle in the body. Your lungs cannot be filled to capacity while sitting up straight because your diaphragm is not capable of dropping down far enough. Being fully aerated is something we lose while sitting and actually has more to do with expanding around the middle (watch any other species of animal breathe) than opening our chest. You will always be a better writer than me though so I will continue to watch and admire your cursive skill.

  • @PAScribe

    @PAScribe

    5 жыл бұрын

    Karl Trautmann Thank you Karl. There are always right and wrong ways to correct people. As you know so much about biology, I would suggest you take the time to do a video on how they work in relation to writing. i would be more than happy to add a link to your explanation. I know the hip flexor muscles are a muscle group and not one muscle, if this came across incorrectly I can only apologise. Of course I know the lungs cannot be filled to capacity if you are sitting down, but the video is about the fullness of capacity whilst sitting down. Diaphragm breathing is more important for writing than chest breathing as chest breathing is an unnatural thing we learn. Once we give into the breathing, the diaphragm will naturally kick in. That gives us the rhythm to do the writing effectively. This is what spaces the letters evenly. But please remember these videos were not meant for public sharing, They were only meant for students studying with me. I decided to share them as much of the information in them really puts the student in a space to really start in the correct position for writing.

  • @karltrautmann8218

    PaulAntonioScribe You're welcome sir and thank you. I don't "know so much about biology" as you so elegantly put it but I do have a pretty solid grasp of breath and breathing. I will consider making a video, though my area of expertise is in classical music, not in writing. I would highly recommend you check out the work of Dr Belisa Vranich. She's an expert on breathing in any arena. I am happy to read that you know more about breathing than you let on in the video, I hope you can understand my frustration as I saw an authority figure perpetuate falsehoods about breathing. As a viewer, I never saw any indication that you were talking about a compromised breathing but only that you were instructing breathing improperly. I do apologize though, I thought this was a publicly shared video. If what I did was akin to calling out a teacher in the classroom then I misspoke and should have reached out privately instead.
