    The rack is stuck in full fuel, that’s why when you take the air away it’s blowing black out the exhaust because it’s rich. If it was burning oil from the turbo it would be blue smoke, take the injection pump off and figure out why it’s suck in full fuel. It’s not the turbo.

    Fuel rack is stuck at full throttle inside the injection pump. The soot in the turbo and plate is where it was sucking the little bit of air to run while your dad held the plate to restrict it to idle. That too is why when you shut the fuel transfer pump off the first time you tried, it shut down an not after as it had the engine lift pump pumping still

  • @fredschell3972
    @fredschell39727 ай бұрын

    Mile , that knob you thought was the shut down is the throttle. You're getting too much fuel and not enough air. You will wash down the cylinder walls if you keep running it with the air plugged. The soot is caused by all fuel and no air.

    Gotta love the sound of an old Cat. Even if it isn't running great. Of course the sound of a 3408 or 1693 will REALLY make you smile. My Mom's cousin had W900 long hoods that he hauled Pepsi with for years. He had one 1693, 1 3408 and 2 V-12's.

    I ran into this with a 3406b. The rack was stuck and I finally broke it free...or so I thought. It started up full throttle. Turned out one of the plungers was stuck and once I replaced it, it ran fine. Didn't even have to take the pump off. Cat parts, even aftermarket ain't cheap though

    Brilliant result Mike, Albeit it somewhat more exciting than you bargained for. Steve Feszchack has mentioned a peculiarity of A engines running away under. certain conditions. I think it was linked to lack of air pressure. Give him a shout, he reeky knows his 3406 stuff.

    I’ve every confidence that you’ll get the pump issue sorted, that old girl WANTS to run! If it comes down to the pump needing pulled apart and rebuilt(provided the issue IS in the pump and NOT the turbo), if there’s no options in B.C.? You might consider City Diesel in Knoxville, Tennessee. They were able to rebuild Tim Gentry’s pump for his 1693, so a 3406A PC pump should be no challenge. As far as the negative comments go, Mike…I like the way you’re doing things better than the way that they’re NOT…stay the course, see ya in the next video. Chris

    Don’t mind the negative comments Mike, that was pretty funny! Injection pump definitely stuck internally, needs a strip and clean at the very least. The turbo is no spring chicken either, and will probably need some love in future, but that is not your main issue currently…

    Hey Mike it's nice to see you got it to run, sort of. As others here have said I would not run it any more until you address the issue with the fuel rail. I think there is a small cover plate at the back end of the injector pump that you can inspect the fuel rail and see if it moves freely or not. Sitting all those years and it's age I'm sure it's stuck. Again as others here have stated, remove it and take it to work. See if any of the guys at your shop work on injector pumps. If not, see if someone locally does. And I would change the oil now, with "cheap" oil, before you try and run that engine again. You do not know how much fuel or other debris is in that oil now. Good luck Mike, I'm sure you and your dad will get that truck running like a champ some day.

    It was more general popularity than a degree of switching injection systems. DI and PC ratings were simultaneously offered during its whole production run of 1973-1983. From 1973-76 the highest hp DI and PC ratings were DIT 325 and PCTA 360. ‘77-78 the DITA Economy 350 and PCTA 375, ‘79-81 was DITA 380 and PCTA 380, finally in ‘82 the DITA 400 came. When the PCTA 380 came, DI became popular enough that PC was only frequently ordered for California units as it was rather difficult to get DI ratings to meet the emission standards there.

  • @redline9536
    @redline95366 ай бұрын

    Some of your issue is that the transfer pump supplies 25psi to the injection pump. Siphoning fuel acts like your transfer pump is no longer operating. But like everyone else is saying, your rack is stuck. Easiest way to understand what is happening is think of a sink water faucet. Each injection line is connected to a faucet inside the injection pump. The rack controls all 6 in unison. Your throttle pedal controls the rack. Basically you have 6 diesel faucet valves stuck full flow open. that's the problem. I would try tapping on the side of the side of the pump and working the throttle. Maybe it might break free. Maybe. Try the simplest fix first.😂 If it comes free, remember it stuck once. It can do it again!!!

    most likely all of your pumps in your injection pumps are seized. I just did a deck engine on a well drilling truck that had been parked for about 12 years, same engine as yours, I managed to get 2 of the six injection pumps freed up but had to replace the other four that were rusted and seized, this is not a job for somebody that has never done it, there are timing issues involved with the pumps to the rack, another thing that could’ve happened is someone replaced a pump along time ago and got it out of time ,this will hold the rack in advanced fuel state, also you need a couple special tools to remove the pumps and install, Mike, I hope this helps, I would like to see you get this old girl running again, I recently bought a 76, 359 with an 892 Detroit in it, good luck don’t give up ,it’s all good

    That was some wake up call after all those years standing, sounds pretty good to , the smoke would be white if it was running soley on turbo oil, maybe by cutting the air supply to turbo is making it black smoke, my monies on a diesel pump rack stuck wide open, check the intake pipe or manifold for oil, but the sumps still full which tells me its not running purely on a blown turbo seals oil, a rack stuck wide open would flood the cylinders with fuel to,. its one or both of these problems , i'll bet when you 1st got in it you pressed the throttle pedal to the floor ? good luck,.

    That engine may be out of production. But they are still being used and rebuilt all the time here in Northwest. The only thing that younger mechanics don`t understand is the fuel system. We installed a used 3406 in a D7 Cat farm tractor. When I left that farm I had about 6000 hours on the engine and it was still running fine. You won`t have problems getting that engine into good running condition.

    Hey mate. I'm sure there are a thousand comments already about the same thing. 2 Most likley problems in my opinion. Rack in the pump is siezed at full throttle or diesling from oil pushing past the seal in the turbo (or both). Super easy to check which one. Remove the intake pipe between the turbo and the engine. If the turbo seal is gone it will be full of fresh black oil. You should then be able to start it and be able to control the engine speed via the throttle. If you can't control the engine speed via the throttle then the pump rack is most likely siezed. You may have both problems. From the black smoke choofing out the exhaust. I would lay odds that it was diesling. That is, running on engine oil most likley from the turbo. Either way, keep that plate handy when you start it again. Another point that tells me it's not the rack is that it over reved past the govener setting. Can't do that if it was just the rack. So once again, I agree with your dad. Pull the intake pipe and have a look, then start again and run without the turbo pushing air (and oil) into the intake.

    The rack is stuck in the pump, that's why it runs away and the shutdown lever doesn't work. The shutdown lever is probably working, but the rack is physically stuck. Something sitting for that long you should always check the pump, or if it's a Detroit, check for stuck injectors. I would check for bent valves, 3406PC's and even most DI's generally start floating valves around 2500-2600 if they're stock truck/industrial part numbers.

    Remove the pipe between the turbo and the engine and try to see if the engine runs again? In this case, the oil leaking from a possibly faulty turbo does not enter the engine. If not, then the turbo is leaking oil, if it still runs away, then the engine is sucking oil from somewhere else, the piston or something broken?

    The Rack is Stuck!! The turbo is also bad. By the way it’s been suckin the exhaust thru the seals. That’s a sign of the seals bein gone in the turbo. You’ve got another engine with a pump.

    That black Knob is NOT a manual shut down. It is to throttle it up or down.

    mike, first: yer "shut off" is the idler screw, second: if that daes none ye know yer pump is stuck to what ever it last saw, third: fuel smokes white when lean and black when rich (and aye, water also smokes white) and oil smokes blue, if it smokes yellow ye got much sulfur in it and green is sulfur plus oil leak internal, (ask me how i know) fourth: the Engine is NOT a 100% sealed enviroment, the sut in the intake maye come of the starvation and it suck back the exhaust all the way fae the otherside of the turbo (think of race cars without blow off valve, the air goes back out where it came in when the pressure side is closed) and possibly since it ran full fuel it back feeded it self (weierd but ye never know there is always a first) my suggestion take pump and injectors out clean them and soak them for 1,2 days in a bucket of WD40 or other rust desolvant and get them to an shop that can check and adjust them side note: take the Turbo out and the other stuff and bring it to yer work place engeneer or master and ask him if that stuff is ok, conclusion: Bad/stuck fuel system, If yer wanna start it up again take the pressure pipe off of the turbo and yer see nothing changes, except ye got an awsome air blower, ye see it's the rack that says "nope, fook tha".
