Starting a Jawa DT500 Four Valve
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Starting a Jawa DT500 4 valve speedway bike. This bike was rotting away in storage for over 20 years, before being retrieved, cleaned and repaired. Note that a full inspection and assessment should be carried out before attempting to start any motorcycle having been stored for a long period of time, especially those which have had castor oils used in the lubrication system and/or racing methanol in the fuel system. Other than that, enjoy!

I had a Jawa 500 4 valve in 1981 to 83 when I was driving speedway in sweden. I can feel the sound from the past. Goran
Nice restoration. So cool to see an upright cylinder again :)
I can tell you had joy in fixing it up, it looks and sounds fantastic!
Lovely, always my favourite Jawa..... I used to have a Briggo four valver...... Keep it mate, nice bit of history........
Wow, what a great sounding machine!
I read about those bikes and dreamed of riding one. I never realized they were so darned hard to start!
very very nice piece of racing history you've got yourself there definitely a sweet Jawa dt500 and I bet it would still be competitive today
At 0:30 You can just pull the spark plug and achieve the same results for the dry top end. Take the plug out, and wind the back wheel till you see the oil run through the oil pump tube. Or, drill and tap two holes with set screws above the cams on the valve cover, and inject oil into the valve cover. Either way, saves time and a gasket-- 3:25 Anyway, nice Jawa '894'--this is the 38mm Factory(1976-79) Mikuni carb side port. The 895 was a center port, with a Dellorto 34mm factory carb. This motor won many World Championships in sPeEdWaY, it received a bad reputation on the 'Amateur' circuit, because some guys didn't know how to time it, since there were no timing marks for the twin cam set-up.
Superb machine. I have similar bike 10 years ago.
Pamietam jak sie scigali w Tarnowie na takich jak bylem dzieckiem. Cudowna maszyna.
LOL! Yeah! she certainly took off when she fired and I had to struggle to bring her under control alright. The bike has given me an enormouse amount of satisfaction getting it going after so many years of gathering dust. It actually has an enormous amount of history including winning an Australian title many years ago (so I have been told)
Love these bikes! Good job!

Remember these bikes well when Edinburgh had a track can still taste the speedway smell Cheers.
Really nice video mate.
A thing of beauty
Thanks pyrofella, The oil syringe is a commonly available item from any auto shop. I got mine from the local Auto One here in Australia for around the $8AUS mark, but depending where you are in the world, any auto shop will sell them. They're great for bleeding brakes as well.
Magnificent bike.
Thanks for that. Having not cleaned out all the R40 from it the last time someone ran it was as if they had tipped a bucket of areldite down the top end and then left it for 20 years or so. The main challenge was cleaning all that out. I now run Penrite 50 or any other reasonable MINERAL oil in it. It still runs on Methanol though. Mind you I try to run it up every month or so - having said that, I'd better go out there now and give her a quick run up now! Maybe put your up on U Tube as well!
Looks like a fun bike. Thing is sweet.
just watching this i can damn near smell it loved it especially when there was a little nitro in the mix
@TedsChopper I bet it does! Lovely looking bit of kit. I much prefer the uprights to the modern laydown engines...
the front tire looked flat to me. but only on the bottom ! all bikes are somewhat irresistable. very fabulous.
nice job I have a DT 500 makes me want to go start it
Your 1977-79? Jawa Twin cam side port has the outlawed factory 38mm Mikuni Carb. The FIM ditched this carb, and conformed all speedway carbs at 34mm, even to this present day. Nice M/C.
Awesome bike !
Truth of the matter is I've never raced one - my scene was more enduros and motocross. This bike kinda lobbed in my lap as a non running wreck, and being the person I am, I took enormous joy in fixing up and getting it running again. Even though I have run it around a track relatively slowly (and believe me, it wanted to take off), the only running it gets is once every couple of months or so as you see here. However, it would be good so see it ridden around a track the way it should be!
Great - now it's time for a ride in the town...
What a cool thing !
Beautiful machine.
Just can't beat the sound an the smell of a speedway bike.
Would love to see a video of you racing it!!

too bad they dont these old school mufflers are not allowed anymore. i remember those days... greetins from STAL RZESZOW SPEEDWAY TEAM
Wow good engine.
It acts surprisingly user friendly considering. I trust there is no oil ring on the piston? I once got to try a friend's push-rod Jawa speedway bike in the mid '70s. Sure are clumsy to operate in an off track environment. Too bad the basic engine design didn't go into a street worthy version with unit construction and gas fueled, of course.
I've received a lot of requests, and dare I say flack about seeing the bike racing. Truth of the matter is I have never raced one of these bikes and before we were to even think of racing this one, it would have to be completely disassembled, inspected and re-built. Keep in mind, the bike was made operational again (from a completely seized state) with a whole lot of WD40 and mountains of oil syringed through all the oil galleries - the engine was never fully disassembled. I'm sure one day we'll give it a burn around a track in a classic race situation, however that will be after the motor is completely re-built (when I have the time and $'s to spend on it) and in the hands of a good rider!
Nice video! Have you any ideas into previous owners of the machine? Also how did you aquire it, eg where exactly was it rotting away in storage? Thanks.
Like it ,If only I could smell the methane as well.
@samtromb Thanx Goran, sorry I haven't replied to you earlier (couldn't access my account). Where in Sweden did you race? (I love Sweden - it's a magnificent place). What level did you reach?
That's how Speedway bikes used to to look and sound

Blockchain Game i also spent more time at the speedway races at the O.C.Fairgrounds than i should have. the first time i saw a speedway bike .was in high school. they had some guy come to my high school and run his bike around the 1/4 mile track that ran around the football field. he made one lap, the track coach came out needless to say he was a little pissed. but man i thought it was awesome.
Where do I buy one? Do you sell it?
Love that Jawa sound...nice rebuild .. where did you get that oil syringe from?.. I want one!
CLASSIC BIKE
Beautiful...
very good
What a sound......!!!

I LOVE SPEEDWAY - FALUBAZ ZIELONA GÓRA :-)
@claudiusk8erul That's for sure - not sure what a Harley "Travidson" is but I do have a Harley Davidson chopper, and there's no way you would get that around an oval track as fast as the Jawa (LOL!)
Pourquoi ce genre de moteur n'existe pas pour le grand public ? en plus pas de vitesse à passer.
I love speedway.
My father would start those by hand spinning the wheel.
Nice...:0

No brakes or gears on speedway bikes, even still today. Throttle and clutch only.
Do you think you could ever get one of these road legal?

It won't idle? Don't expect it to live long, revving a stone cold motor like that but hey, it's your machine...
@whalesong999

+Gary Chandler There may not be an idle stop screw but I don't know. He seemed to treat it quite gently in the revving. Castor oil can be the worst possible thing to store a motor with and running alcohol is also bad in combination - I know from model airplane engine experience. Seems like current synthetics would be better in this day.

po18guy When older motors are cold, the pistons, etc. are more oval in shape, and get circular when warm. This can cause piston slap and more wear. Modern engines have tighter tolerances and better alloys, thus not as much a problem, although I still warm a motor before using heavier throttle.

+po18guy -Actually, you're right as I wasn't thinking of race-only engines, but rather engines in general, broken in or not... Old habits of a US Coast Guard engineman/machinery tech!

It's sorta fun to see the comments coming in here. Us tech/engine folks that have seen many a motor to attend to! I was a svc. mgr./tech on bikes for about 15 years, still lots of fresh recall to draw on as I see others do to.
