Starter replacement on a Mk4 Volkswagen Jetta Golf Beetle 1999-2004

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome back everyone!
Today we are going to replace the starter on this 1999 VW Jetta. The procedure is very similar to other years and models. If you have a Jetta, Golf, or Beetle, with the 2.0, 1.8t turbo, VR6, or even the TDI diesel, this video should help you fix your car and save you money!
I am also putting together a video on complete no crank diagnostics on Mk4 Volkswagen platform, so stay tuned for that.
If you have any questions, please put them in the comments and I will get with you as soon as I can. Thanks so much for watching!

BTW. Personally..I have more respect for the man that does a video by removal and install by hand tool versus Air Tools. Just saying you've earned my respect, for what its worth. Thank you my good man.

Great job, especially the cleaning and explanation as to why you cleaned the bolts. Many people won't bother. Thanks, great explanation/instruction.

I realized the second hole i mentioned previously is actually the bell housing hole that the top bolt goes through to bolt onto the block. So im guessing corroded and uncertain how to go about removing.

Sometimes that happens. If you keep backing it out it will come out. You can apply pressure with the open end of a wrench to the bolt shoulder while turning if necessary.

I just removed the starter on my 2001 Jetta and that top bolt was a 3-levels-deep major pain to get out. Took 1½ hrs just turning that upper bolt alone due to 95K miles worth of gunk built up solid in the bellhousing hole it passes through. With thick padded gloves against a ½" ratchet and practically no swing-room, it was harder than hell to turn it but, with much might, I slowly, click by click, turned it out. It did follow through turning itself out w/o having to push under the shoulder of the bolt with an open-end wrench. I also soaked that ear-hole with WD40 even though it's not threaded. I tried from both above and below and from above proved better for access and maneuverability. It felt like I was going to snap it or flatten the threads as it came through the bellhousing ear-hole but that didn't happen. I must have pulled on that ratchet over 300 or 400 times but it did eventually turn out. That bolt was so tight with resistance on every single ratchet swing I really thought I was going to pull the whole car right off of the jack stands. Turning it back through (in) a few times on occasion may have helped as well. Leave the bottom bolt in hand-snug so the weight of the starter doesn't lay on the upper bolt as you're turning it out. Drink a large muscle protein shake mixed with a double espresso before you tackle it. You're gonna need it.

While removing the top starter bolt it wouldnt slide all the way out. It stopped at the threads. Is it corroded or is the second hole threaded as well. Bottom slid all the way out so extremely confused

@ 6:17 you reference a wire that is damaged. I am finding the same issue with my son's Jetta but have no room to solder the wire back on to the connector. Do you know what the connector is called? I feel I may need to buy a new one but have no idea where to start.

Mine was the starter solenoid connector. You can get it at the dealer or a salvage yard. Hope this helps!

What is the technique to get the starter out when it is stuck? (VW usually provides a place to apply a big lever.)

  • @AutoScholarwithMrB

I would soak the mounting surface area with penetrating oil. After a while, a piece of wood and a strike with a hammer should work it loose without doing harm. Good luck with your repair!
