Starter Replacement - How to Replace Starter on Toyota Pickup/Hilux 22R/22RE

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Once in a while my truck just makes a single click when I go to start it up. This is due to a dead spot in the starter where the contacts are worn. I’ve already cleaned the battery terminals and that helped a little bit. If I give the starter some taps with a hammer, sometimes it will start right up. That’s a sure sign that the starter’s going bad. Today I’ll show how to replace the starter on a Toyota Pickup truck and 4Runner with the 22r and 22re engine.

Classic symptom of bad starter solenoid contacts. I always just pull the cover off the solenoid and clean the contacts, they work great after that.

Late to the party here but could this also cause the starter to start sticking? I can hear mine continue to whir after the engine has started and it usually releases after ~5 seconds. Afraid it's gonna burn the thing out. May give this a shot before full on replacing

Thanks! Lesson = sometimes you just need to hit it with a hammer to fix it!

The new starter not working once you get it installed is perfect. Haha! That is so something that would happen to me. Glad the hammer did the trick.

It's nice that you had an engine sitting there to provide a better look at where the bolts are.

@@6thGearGarage True, you can see it, but making a video and showing folks is another story. My 2wd must be easier to access? I removed all the smog stuff and have an Offy intake, so that is probably why mine looks easier. Great work, and we love your videos. Jim and Tim

It's always worth cleaning both sides of that ignition wire clip plug first. The metal contact blades can loosen up or the plastic plug or clip can be cracked. They can also be very dirty inside if you've ever had an oil leak. And heads up to anyone with air conditioning, it will be even harder to reach the mounting bolts from the front.

Thanks for the video. With your help, I replaced the starter motor in my 92 pickup. I had to do the same socket acrobatics you did, but it worked and my truck is back on the road.

First time I've seen an part replacement video end with the disappointment of the new part still not working properly 😂. I have it happen every now and then and I'm always thinking "I CANNOT be the only one this happens to".

I actually had this issue but it was the relay. The relay was acually good but the connection from the battery had a wiring issue. I ran a 12 gauge wire from the relay to the battery and havent had issue since

The wires that are just sitting there have a clip that clips over the wire where the star ended plastic thingy is and the clip is attached to the bottom starter bolt, can be tricky to get it and bolt in and thats why its not there for your truck...someone said F it and left the wires hanging. Also you can get a Toyota remanufactured starter from Yota toyota parts...bit pricy at $125 but Im a OEM type if I can....
