I took a starter from a Volvo 850/V70 TDI with the VW 5cil diesel engine. It fitted right away and the only thing I had to modify was replacing the screws that hold the cooling fan to the flywheel for allenhead screws to make just enough room for the starer clutch.

I traded some trailer tires to my bil for 1 such engine. I looked for a started for it and found a new one under my workbench that fit perfectly. It was for a john deere 4125. I only used it since it was free to me as the old deer powered sandblasted it was for died. Perfect fit but $$$$

How interesting that it uses a car starter! Right in line with everything being overbuilt on this engine. I have to think that starter would turn the little engine over almost indefinitely without burning up. I like that.

My Deere starter is so overpowered for this engine that even with a small battery i can crank heavily for insane amount of time

Go to this military manual, and down to 6-1 and 6-2, says something about raising generator end to clear the frame. not sure what it's saying. books.google.com/books?id=3QIYAAAAYAAJ&pg=SA2-PA26&lpg=SA2-PA26&dq=MEP016+remove+generator&source=bl&ots=hQSa8EkbXu&sig=EcgIOaKNcIunvJFMwTW0eAPFpI0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwipsvLlstnZAhXBxFkKHZnDCb4Q6AEIJzAA#v=onepage&q=MEP016%20remove%20generator&f=false

have you removed the engine/gen head from frame completely? im not sure on this unit as mine is just the engine but most small generators need to be removed from frame before engine/gen head separation

Hello Paul, I'm on my way Friday to Macon Georgia to pick one of these 4a032 bad boys up, did you ever get your sawmill working with this engine?

Not yet, cut a lot of metal, need to start welding. But after thinking, I think it would be better if bolted together, so I can disassemble it, so it can be moved.

Shane K I'm making a bandsaw mill right now for it. There are lots of videos of ones that people built on youtube, check them out. The pulley shaft on the end, has to be made, this engine does not come with a shaft. Military surplus sites such as Saturn and Coleman's sell them for $50. I made mine by molding aluminum and pressing a shaft into it. I first wanted to make a gokart with it, but this is considered a stationary engine and shouldn't be moving when running.

There's one on Craigslist right now so I looked up what they're good for, people are making small airboats, sawmills, and actually adding horsepower somehow and using it for experimental aircraft! I guess there's a restrictor plate you can take out and add HP. Anyway, thanks for answering, good luck on the bandsaw. You should put up a video of it when your finished.

you can use it for anything you'd use a 15 horse gas engine for. they are under-rated for military at 7hp but can easily do twice that stock. government requested a 7hp engine so continental downgraded the specs on their existing 032 to fill the request

In see that they closed up last year. There is Coleman's military surplus only a few miles from Saturn. I wonder if they got their inventory. But it doesn't show on their web site. I see on Craigslist and FB marketplace of people selling these military engines. I think Saturn might have had an auction to get rid of their stuff. The worst thing is mounting these engines, not a simple thing. Bummer that I won't be able to get parts like oil filters and such anymore.

Is this a 1992-1995 or a 1996-1999 starter, or does it matter? I don't want to buy the wrong one on eBay. I have enough "boat anchor" parts in my shop now to almost build a car. Ha ha!

I used the 91-95, bought 2, slight differences, but fit the same. I got mine from junk yard eBay sellers for around $25. The main concern is the actual diameter of the motor, must be small because of limited space on the 4A032 military engine.
