StarTalk Podcast: Cosmic Queries - Cosmic Grab Bag

Ғылым және технология

Do black holes evaporate? What’s really happening at SpaceX? What is dark gravity? On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are answering fan-submitted Cosmic Queries covering topics all across the universe.
To kick things off, Neil and Chuck investigate dark gravity and dark energy. Could dark energy be leftover energy from an evaporated black hole? We explore how black holes eventually disappear. Neil enlightens us about the “five ages of the universe.” We ponder if dark matter or dark energy could predate the universe itself. Neil tells us why galaxies are found where dark matter has collected them.
You’ll hear why radio waves are the preferred contact method to chat with aliens. We dive into conspiracy theories and why humans are susceptible to believing in them. Discover more about “dark-sky ordinances” and how light pollution impacts telescopes. Neil shares an example of a city and observatory working together to create less light pollution.
Are the sizes of planets proportional to the distance between planets? We discuss the gravitational influences of planets on each other. We also discuss how many light years you would have to travel in order to see the Roman battles taking place on Earth. If time is a coordinate, why can’t we move back and forth in time? We take a look at predeterminism.
Lastly, we explore the science of Superman. What would happen if something made the Earth rotate in the opposite direction like in Superman. Neil reminisces on his star-turn in a Superman comic. All that, plus, you’ll learn how Neil found an actual home for Krypton.
NOTE: StarTalk+ Patrons can watch or listen to this entire episode commercial-free.

    I don't care how lame this sounds: I freaking love Neil and Chuck, and am eternally grateful that a program as wonderful as StarTalk exists! When Neil says that it's an educator's job to instill a passion for science into his or her students, all I can think is how real that is for all the people living in the world today who've been inspired to learn about the sciences through the contagious, thoughtful, profound words of Neil deGrasse Tyson -- and his BFF Chuck. Both these men make the universe not only more interesting; They make it a much, much better place. At least they make my appreciation for it that much greater. As much as 2020 has brought us all (or many) a lot of hardship, to have these episodes as an escape -- and to open a portal from our downsized, pandemic-afflicted lives into the universe beyond -- is about as incredible a gift as we could ask for. Again... Apologies for the lameness. I just love these two and am very grateful they exist!

    Hi Neil and Chuck, how you doing? Hope you're great! I really wanted to know how great scientists nowadays discovered, back in their times when they were kids and teens, the experiments and projects they say they did. In example: Neil said he made his own telescope and went to Africa just to see an eclipse. Michiu Kaku said he built his own particle accelerator. It doesn't need to be famous scientists: one day, a guy from the internet said in a comment to Star Talk that when he was a kid, he almost exploded his house with a chemistry experiment. When I google for these cool things I can only find super simple things like: put some oil on top of water in a cup and you'll see the don't mixture, wow...

    I have a question relating to Earth's magnetic polar shift. Or more specifically, the weakening of the magnetic field. Since the field is generated by the flow of nickel and iron in the earth's core, could a massive reservoir of magma building closer to the surface cause a fluctuation in said field. My thought is that perhaps the slower moving magma collecting in a generalized area, like central South America, could slow the surrounding field or possibly push it away through like magnetism. I'm probably completely wrong in all of this but it has been stirring in my mind. I've taken interest in both super volcanoes and the earth's magnetic shift recently. As I researched I noticed how closely the weakened field was to three powerful volcanoes in South America. This is what sparked the idea.

    That scene in Superman was meant to show not that Superman was causing the Earth to reverse direction, but that he was travelling so fast, that time was progressing backwards, but just for him. This would be in the vein of the famous physics limerick: There once was a lady so bright, That she could move faster than light. She left one day, In a relative way, And arrived the previous night. As for any human becoming romantically connected with Superman, I would refer you to Larry Niven's excellent paper on the subject, "Man of Steel, Woman of Tissue Paper."

    Excellent information about black holes. Evidence that matter and anti-matter are separated by black holes. Further evidence that a black hole is the inverse of a big bang. Evaporation of black holes take nearly an infinite time, while the start of a big bang is nearly instantaneous.

  • @insane_troll
    @insane_troll3 жыл бұрын

    14:00 - If you see you're heading towards a black hole, it is a bad idea to try to back away, because it takes a lot of fuel to come to a stop and head in the opposite direction. You need to accelerate in the perpendicular direction so that you miss it. That takes far less fuel. It is much the same as on a highway; it is a lot easier to steer around an obstacle than to come to a complete stop.

    "Dust in the Wind," recorded by Kansas in July 1977 and released in January 1978 on the 'Point of no return' album. It was written by Kerry Livgren, who didn't intend to do anything with just the guitar part, but was encouraged (some say nagged) by his wife to write the words for it. Livgren played it for his bandmates after all the other songs for the album had been recorded, because he didn't know if they would like it. It was the band's greatest hit, reaching number six on April 22, 1978. Just FYI.

    Dr. Tyson, hello. Hi, Chuck (btw, Chuck, my name is easy..it's pronounced "mbgtrweukjp vcdfersekl)..lol Seriously though, how can Dr. Hawking's proposed radiation exist if the matter/antimatter pair starts from one point? According to Space Time videos, nothing can spend time AT the Event Horizon, so, that point of particular origin, pardon the pun, is going to be either: 1. Inside the BH, which means that neither particle can escape, or, 2, the point is outside the BH so it doesn't matter if any particles stay or fall in or fly away, because it didn't originate from inside the BH. What am I missing, Dr. Tyson (and hopefully Dr. Levin)? Thanks all! Love your shows! J and Bravo (my service dog)

    One thing I've always wondered....how far away from the Hubble space telescope could you place a lit 100watt light bulb and still see (detect) it?

  • @TheArtofFugue

    @TheArtofFugue

    2 жыл бұрын

    I have your answer! One year late lol. So, So, you have a 100watt bulb and you wanna know how far away said bulb can be for the Hubble to detect. I’ll just saw the bulbs on Mars surface because that’s about as far as you can detect with Hubble. the apparent magnitude 0 is roughly 2 lumen per square kilometer, so a good 100 watt equivalent light bulb would have magnitude 0 at the distance of about 30 km (give or take, depending on directionality.) Increasing the distance by a factor of 10 drops the flux by a factor of 100, and increases the apparent magnitude by 5. Mars is at least 60 million km away. So, the light bulb would be somewhere above +31. Ditto what I said previously, That is close to the limit for the Hubble. You could not detect this with any land based telescope as they can only detect about up to +25!

    Two things on conspiracy theories: They might be more exciting to the theorist's brain, less boring than real life, therefore more captivating. I'm not sure because they bore me to death. And second, they make the theorist feel special, who is one of the few who knows the "truth" while the majority are ignorant. Theorists rarely agree on the details of the conspiracies because they are more special than the others in the special group to which they belong.

    Conspiracy theorists like theories that implicate their own government. It's why they believe the irrational "deep state" conspiracies, but reject the much more likely Trump/Russia scandal. What a waste. Conspiracy theorists should be working for our country, not against it. I get it. It's a defense mechanism to show they won't be fooled by those who have power over them. Isn't that ironic?

    @@jgroovy1973 it feels like both could be partially true, there could be a thing such as deep state trying to destabilize the country same time a president could be atleast doing illegal business if not fully serving a foreign power.

    This totally makes me think of the Community episode: "Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design" It is so hilariously convoluted, that by the end you can really only come to the conclusion that conspiracy theories are the absolute dumbest thing on the planet to invest time in. ... But yeah, I completely agree about it being an ego thing! That becomes especially exposed at the point that the conspiracy theorist can't defend their case, so they tell you to do the research. That's when I just about lose it. I mean, what in the world is more ignorant than a person believing in something that can't be explained without their detractors doing 100% of the homework? That would be like Neil addressing every question on Cosmic Queries with: "I already know the answer, so just Google it!". I would unsubscribe from here with the quickness!

    J Groovy it is, because people who create these conspiracies implicate governments, organizations, agencies while failing to single out people. An organization is nothing but a large collection of people, and the likelihood of any large organization functioning as one collective brain ALL THE TIME😂 is completely ridiculous

    POINT size. Every font can be different point sizes. My word processor initially fires up setting whatever font I have selected at 11. I think it's a bit small so I always change it to 14. The 11-point size looks more to me like the size you would see in the "fine print" of a contract.

    To fill in on one of the questions, you could watch your past if you could magically teleport. The issue with travelling above the speed of light is that light travels 300,000 kilometres per second and as you probably already know speed increases mass and when an object reaches 300,000 kilometres per second, its mass becomes infinite and so does the energy required to move it. That's why this is practically impossible even on a subatomic level. So this chapter will have to stay in the science fiction and fantasy books.

    2:20 Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity tells us a gravitational field doesn’t emit any energy, since gravity is merely the bending of space time due to mass.
