It really is the best series of science videos on the internet. Even though I couldn't follow along with along of it, I still absolutely loved it. I will be buying the books for sure.

I can tell from listening to Sean Carroll how quite intelligent and precise in his thinking he is! 😊

If I could have another baby, I would play these "ask me anything" videos as soothing baby bedtime sounds.

Sean carrol is one of the most interesting to listen to. He just seems so genuine.

I like the "self undermining argument" reasoning. I've noticed it before, where people insist something is true even when the reasoning which lends it proof undermines its own reason. I've always called it an argument into nihilism, as nihilism (existential nihilism) suffers the same flaw.

The relative special relavance is entropic LOL

No mathematician ever worries about Gödel's theorem either (in my experience). It puts no limits on actual results, just the theoretical extent of ALL results.

I lost my best friend in december 2021. We were good friends for about 35 years. That was rough. I still keep in touch with his family. The only advice I can give is, don't let it shut you down. You'll have to go through the grieving process, but don't let it consume your life.

This comes down to probabalistic vs deterministic nature of reality which we don't know enough about, but I would say that our minds and experiences are seemingly deterministic, but what causes a neuron to fire? A buildup of sodium ions , and at that scale the probabilistic nature of atoms might take hold. So it's unknown whether the universe is probabalistic or deterministic and in the words of one of my favorite robots: "need more input".

Finding the correlates of qualia would give valuable hints as to what role they might play in physics but may or may not be a sufficient explanation in itself, depending on what you might regard as sufficient. It would be analog to the Schroedinger wave function, you could find uses for technology and make predictions, and still be oblivious to its underlying physics. However it would enable us to hypothesize beings capable of feeling&experiencing wherever else these correlates appear.

You say in order to explain qualia you either have to change the known laws of physics or have sonething additional in your ontology which can't have any effect of its own. Changing the current laws would be absurd but I claim there can be a notion of qualia influencing our behaviour and therefore translating into physical forces by friction with our brains or whatever. They might be new unknown physical forces of their own which doesn't have to be fundamentally emergent, or they might be reducable to known forces. For all we know, the range of plausible explanations is vast. Contemporary Naturalists who are betting the Hard Problem would kind of evaporate in emergence should be taken very seriously, but also might as well be subject to their own expertise fallacies.

Sir: just one question: Neuroscientists find there are bundle of neurons that have aromatic rings with many pi electrons. They suspect these pi electrons may be the source for our conscience . Could you speculate , when we die, what happen to those pi electrons or information they carry?

If the premise of the “rat learning” question is valid and if you accept that we are likely living in a universal simulation, then it follows that code and state might get reused for lower order systems/simulations for the purpose of efficiency and reduced complexity. It might also have implications for the fidelity of the simulation we’re in as a reflection of how many layers of nested simulation there are above our reality. Or rats are magic. 🤷

Wish the best for this attempt at explaining stuff while detailing maths. Penrose's books I bought but frankly were outside my pay grade. Hope chapter 2-8 journey will be easier with your storytelling and explanations.

I enjoyed the question about how you commute, and could really relate to how you answered. I find London has the best public transport of any major city that I have frequented. Although paradoxically, it is rather bothersome that it is widely regarded to be the stabbing crime capital of the Western Hemisphere. I could go into how this can be a problem for the service user/potential victim, but it is subject to change due to being further offset daily at the rising prices of fossil fuels. I defer to comment further on the matter at this point. Also I suggest you invest in grain.

1:58:00 i'm an artist, albeit a graphic designer, but our art room at school was more like a civics class than the civics class, we played music, the beatles, hendrix, who, beefheart - you name it, and we had discussed psychedelics, even though we were only 15 or so, so, when i got the chance i tried LSD, my friend who was the supplier was into art and meditation and all things transendental, and i was just curious as to how it might effect my art. it affected my art not at all, i was not better or worse, no more imaginative, about the onlt difference i could report is vividness of colours and the geometry of shapes, and the beginnings of what became severe paranoia. i have to say i am known for being "grounded" mt feet firmly on the tarmac, so things i hallucinated always had a base in reality, no desire to fly, no visions of ggod.

Sean mentioned that briefly but didn't seem to emphasize your point which is correct. In terms of censorship; the thing you do to prevent something could be the thing that causes it. I say allow the court of public opinion to discern what is good and leave the rest with the chaff.

I agree that it's not a good idea to mix God with science in the sense that u don't want to end a scientific paper with a "the particles collide and produce X cuz of God" but u can certainly say that God is behind whatever mechanism you're explaining. In other words, its very easy to be a man or woman of faith but allow for the full depth exploration of God's wonder that is our reality.

Submit an article to a journal to be peer reviewed. If you can make a case, it might get published. The harder part is to get other labs to do experiments to verify your hypothesis. Usually you need your own lab to build the influence.

Don’t we do that all the time? For example, until very recently, women in the United States had been granted the right to have an abortion by a Supreme Court consisting of men, who could not grant the same right to themselves (for obvious reasons). The real question is whether there is a critical mass of Chinese-speaking members in the theater audience, such that a stampede resulting in injury could develop if someone shouts in Chinese. Somewhat of a hidden assumption there, perhaps.

Does Sean Carroll think he has NO right? He’d probably allow himself to yell it if there was fire in the theatre. The point about a Cantonese speaker being able to yell it doesn’t really hold because it is not the word that Carroll wouldn’t allow himself to say, it’s the incident that saying it would insight. Presumably Carroll could himself learn the Cantonese word for fire and yell it in a crowded theatre without an issue or almost any non-English word for “fire” in North America.

I think a zombie would be conscious, just so it could have the ability to "act just like a person." But, it wouldn't have an identity built on it's conscious experience. The 'self' that is invented, thinks that it IS consciousness. It is not. The very idea of a "zombie" is yet another example of how often we jump past the issue of an identity. I can't be the only one who is noticing this tendency to confuse consciousness with the identity of the self. They are two separate things. A cat is conscious. It's aware of it's position and will protect itself, etc... but I'm not convinced that it creates a "me" or "I" the way that humans do. Maybe the confusion is a result of the process where the human will create an identity and then believe that it's the identity that's conscious. There's a lot more about the concept of the self that is overlooked. When you experience your first few heartbeats for example, there is no "you" doing the experiencing, yet. Only an organism that is begining to create a self. "I have experienced a few heartbeats"

I consider our extinction as inevitable and it doesn’t bother me. There’s no particular reason we should persist if we can’t find an equilibrium strategy with the world. Looks like we abhor equilibrium & have a drive for continuous change, as a species. That’s an unsustainable strategy. Keep in mind that we haven’t been around very long & we inhabit many ecosystems using different strategies. It seems most likely certain strategies persist & are selected.

I like the idea that possibly the Big Bang was no big deal; that the same thing has happened so many times that "Another Big Bang is nothing unusual" So the point is not how large such an occurrence is, but that it is about as probable as many common and smaller events people would ignore because they are common. There is no point to say exactly what Sean Carroll did; if he says something I would not be better at making that point. Still it is an interesting possibility; if someone like Dr Who or someone else who can travel between Universes easily? Such a person would probably consider Big Bangs as some huge number; X? Big Bangs per ? volume of the 11 Dimensional Brane that contains '3D( + time) Universes' I make no claim to know of any other Universes or that they exist as a fact, still depending on how you define the word 'Universe' it seems probable to me. At the minimum is Level 1 Multiverse; if the singular Universe is large enough...infinite, then even our Observable Universe would repeat infinite times. That is technically only one Universe with the same laws of physics for it, but if there are infinite copies of today's Earth AND of today's entire Milky Way? If the copies are exact or only one part per million trillion different...they count as different Universes at least philosophically. Well I lost track and did some rambling, which Sean's' show he does all the time adding more trivia while answering question...he is so much better at this than me though.

Still if there is reincarnation, only one person who claims they are a reincarnation COULD be correct. Ironically the ACTUAL literal reincarnation of Cleopatra might have lived decades recently and never did anything interesting...and ALL who claim to be so are delusional. Well three different possibilities. 1st: the actual reincarnation of Cleopatra. 2nd: all other people who are delusional and claim to be the reincarnation of Cleopatra. 3rd: for people who make such claims impossible to prove wrong, but having no evidence; I think mostly they would not really be delusional...and instead are just bullshitting for a reaction. The Police refuse to return my AI that obeys me and lets me rule the Internet." I like the guy as I think he wants to be an ethical person. Still he says things like that and even the open minded person I am can only react in puzzled disbelief. He ORDERED me to LEAVE this city after he claimed he was angry I did not believe he is the Christian God. If the Christian God does exist? Fine. Still why would God want to do anything to impress me? Why get pissed off at me for buying him a hamburger that made his stomach irritated because he was suffering from Heroin withdrawal? That last one was so silly! He really was angry and to me did not look unusual, so I had no clue he had any problems...and he was angry I did not KNOW he had some problems that day? He puzzles me.

This comes with the level of maturity of course. Emotional Intelligence levels there are 3 in my book. Emotional babies - discovering all emotions, Emotional Toddlers - 'gimme hands' and Emotional Adults. Most of the world I say, are in the stage of emotional toddlers, the one for babies ..it is pretty much understood. Emotional toddlers in the stage of dealing with negative emotions. Learning how to understand what they feel and why they feel, needs always to be self improvement in their chosen reason. Emotional Adults are the ones who have rose above the fears, jealousies and insecurities. That does not say though we have grown into how to word it right. It is a skill of emotional emoting or attitude towards another we choose to practice to want to be better. To the point of free speech that you made about "Hitler didn't go far enough" no doubt there is an inherent disgust to that type of thought but you can't see why it could be dangerous to censor even that distasteful of a thought in the realm of free speech and rather let it die in the court of public opinion? In one sense, prioritizing a short-term future of joy is somewhat pretentious. I don't mean to say this in an insulting tone... I'm a fan of your podcast and I think your rationality is impeccable so don't take it as an attack. It's just if we don't know the upper and lower bounds of reality (such as, knowing the origin of the universe or knowing what comes after heat death, and philosophical problems of what terms can even possibly describe ideas like after time or before time) then we have to assume that avoiding suffering and then going extinct prevents us from potentially discovering upper and lower bounds upon which life or consciousness can be migrated to. Albeit, I entirely agree that maximizing life for as long as possible and generating the longest lasting hell is much, much worse than pretentious, it's excessively unjust. If we could end heat death, we should, but if we cannot then the best approximation of that task is the one which balances the best mix of freedoms to choose purposes and tasks (regardless of pleasure or pain) with the best longevity such that we can discover the upper and lower bounds of reality enough to explain the most fruitful possible world available to this universe. In this sense, longtermism has merit over short term utilitarianism. The latter assumes too much about what thresholds exist and what our limits are. For all we know, you can push back the heat-death of the universe or even escape it but we just don't know how because we are ignorant. To be fair I think this is highly unlikely. But what I'm not convinced about is that nothing existed before the big bang, that the end of the universe is a permanent end or that nothing exists other than the universe and therefore the limits of intelligent life should be found on earth and soon. We should be willing to explore reality and the universe until such a time that we can be certain about these things such that the range of time in which living experiences can be pegged within acceptable and reasonable boundaries is known. If we don't do any better than this we're short-changing ourselves out of the possibilities of existence on the gamble that what we have, what we know and what we can experience now until that short-term extinction is sufficient for us. We don't know it is.
