    Yes you should! Your videos help so many of us young guys out please keep them coming they are incredible. PS, you have got to be the coolest boss I've ever seen. You really love your Job and what you do and it shine's through your dedication to your team and customers, if i could i would love to learn anything and everything i could from you but im in Montana so i just watch every video i can of yours! I came out here to help my sick Father, i stubbled across a job painting but honestly didn't care about it at the time. That changed when i got interested, then i fell in love with what i do but unfortunately my boss likes us to kinda figure things out on our own! So please keep teaching me all that you can cause im very hungry to learn it all if you know what i mean! Your an incredible man, incredible brother and an incredible teacher! Keep up the great work

    I'm 6 months in. In the Denver area at least, this is a great time for hardworking, knowledgeable people to start contacting businesses. Unfortunately there seems to be a shortage of quality, honest contractors these days. I've had clients tell me they don't even care to see my insurance because I showed up and that's good enough. I put one ad on craigslist months ago when I started and the phone doesn't stop ringing. Saving up for your bid package ;)

I live in CA and it is horrible for someone coming up and trying to make it in this field. I have been researching the requirements to sit for my paint and decorator license and it is almost impossible to make a career lateral move since I would have to step down to apprentice level (income wise) so that I can eventually be able to meet the requirements to sit for my exam and license. But I appreciate all the advice and tips you give.

    You are a wealth of information. I was a roofer for many years. Wife and I moved from the Metro Detroit area to here in northern Michigan about 18 months ago. Started a handyman service. I do quality work at good prices. Networked with the correct people and by the grace of God met a few people with good reputation and excellent track records. This is a tourist ski town. Multimillion-dollar homes as well as many rental homes. Many of the owners only come up a couple times a year. I've really made a name for myself up here, always send pictures of completed work and am old enough to know your reputation is everything. Sometimes my customers don't even ask the price, I just bill them upon completion. So far, no complaints whatsoever. Been getting a s*** ton of painting jobs recently. Last week I did a living room + 3 hallways. I quoted the owner 1500 bucks. He just happened to be coming up the day I finished. Wrote me a check for two thousand and thanked me. I honestly don't have a clue how to quote paint jobs. I have another one this week in a 1.5 million dollar home. Got a call today to paint five bedrooms in a home right down the street from that, very similar home. The five-bedroom job, lady wants to go from walls with color to all white. No trim No Ceilings. I honestly don't even know how to bid it. I'm thinking 3500 maybe 4,000, I really don't have a clue. I do know one thing, I'll keep working hard and I always do a good job. Your videos are seriously going to help me up my game. Not thank you enough for your time and effort making these videos.

    I would say California is more difficult to obtain a contracting license then most states. Having paperwork filled out by your old boss stating your a journeyman is one, also going to contracting school is highly recommended, you learn the test which is two parts, law, and the other is trade. You also have to get a background check through the government, felon's cannot obtain a California contractors license. Setting up your business with a tax I.D # and business account with the bank also is recommended. after you pass make sure you get your bonding and insurance in order. I went through the contractor process in 2007 which is a interesting rollercoaster.

    Yup. Sounds about right. I got my C-33 (painting and decorating) contractor license 3 years ago here in CALIFORNIA. Went through the same process. The whole thing cost me about $1500. That’s for contractor school, background check, state exam and all the paperwork and various fees.

    @@zseven1419 the test wasn’t that hard. All the questions had multiple choice answers. The 16 hour crash course at the contractors school helped me tremendously. I went to the school Saturday and Sunday. Monday morning I went to the license board and took the test while all the info was still fresh in my mind. The only questions I had difficulty with were about wallpaper. I’ve never done wall paper.

    I've had liability business insurance for decades. From time to time I've been told I do not need it, even by an insurance agent. I feel better with it. I've never had to use it. I minimize my liability exposure by rarely using spray equipment, being very careful with volatiles (mostly water based) and I work by myself. I don't do contracts (neither party has legal leverage) and I only take money up front for materials. It's free market--the customer can let me go if they do not like my work. I live in rural, NE, Ok where there are lots of little towns (many lake-side) to work in and my income is fair and there is rarely work in winter.

    I have few questions. The idea of starting my own painting biz started two years ago. I got my EIN # and started the paper work. My application gas been accepted in my county and now I'm studying for the first of two tests I must take. 1. Question: How do I hire workers? I can not at this time offer a 9 to 5, 40 hours a week job. I have worked under 1099 for others but how do I find people who are not looking for the 40 hour a week job? I know when people agencies that look to get people employment and even carry"insure" their workers. Is this a a road to travel? 2. For starting out, I probably can't afford a payroll company so how do I pay my workers? Should it be a check from my business account or is Zelle connected to that account a good idea? 3. My thought is, when hiring someone I should have a hand out of what is expected, how I will deal with lateness, theft and other issues. What are some pitfalls with that? 4. How to avoid and handle jobs that didn't do well due to under bidding or unforeseen events such as, I got three workers working on a house and the owner dies. Now I didn't make enough to pay those workers?

    It seems airless sprayer is a must in order to be competitive. There is a company on yt that says they don't do it because they don't like doing it. Not sure how that is possible.

    While airless sprayers are irreplaceable, they are not necessary. In fact much of the time, with prime, prep and clean-up calculated in, they are actually slower than just cut and rolling. Not always, but almost always on interior repaints.

  • @KevinsDisobedience

    @KevinsDisobedience

    4 жыл бұрын

    We use them. Whole house repaints are our bread and butter. And I disagree. They have their place in new construction and exterior paints, but we rarely use them in loved in homes. Too much masking and you still should have a guy backrolling if you want to do it right. But to each his own.
