I never stopped reading and loving books, but for some reason whenever someone releases a “how to enjoy reading again!” Or “how to start a reading habit” video, I’m like a moth to a flame.

I started out not liking reading until I found some books that I liked and I could also pick my books. I’ve kept liking reading since then. I just sometimes don’t have as much time and sadly audiobooks don’t really work for me. With videos like these I’m like I can either know what to do if I somehow get in a slump with reading or I can give this advice to someone else who isn’t a big fan of reading

Ive always been a avid reader but I go through spurts where I devour books, then for a few months randomly Ill read literally nothing. What always works for me to get back into my regular reading is I find something light and fun and easily readable and I always grab the audiobook, and eventually I get sucked back in from listening while at work or just doing things around the house. I found this to be so effective.

When I was young, I was such an avid reader. But schooling killed it for me. For Highschool/undergrad/grad school I was forced to read every day. Whether I liked the material or not. This absolutely destroyed my drive to read. Now that I'm graduating in the spring, I'm so glad I found this video. I would love to get back into reading again once I can do it for myself and not for a grade.

I went almost a decade not reading much because I was working 80 to 100 hours a week. Now that I left that world, I'm sinking back into reading. Lemme tell you, once you drift away from the reading habit, it's hard to train your mind to focus like that again.

I found I struggled with that and still do, but have found that in audiobooks I have been able to stay more engaged. I feel I've become less creative so the addition of a narrator helps bring the characters to life. So now travelling for work has become my book time.

@@christophertravis222 Trying audiobooks was useful to me, because it gave me a solid time-line within which I knew consuming the book could actually be achieved-because I was having so much trouble either finding the time or the focus to physically read again, I wasn't even getting from the start to the end of a chapter reliably consistently for a while. But I also discovered that it really frustrated me to listen in audio sometimes too, because I actually enjoy seeing how different writers format their sentences and paragraphs, and knowing for sure how the names of things are actually spelled[ since I'm more likely to be discussing a book over text-based communications than via word-of-mouth] personally. 🤣 But listening to audiobooks gave me that little boost of feeling like I actually am still capable of finishing a book if I start it and motivating me to start physically reading again too because it got me back in touch with what all I actually enjoy about the reading experience itself in the first place-aside from just knowing the characters and/or the story, so I could participate in thinking or discussing about it in general. ^-^ Lol

The number 1 thing that got me back on track to reading was deleting apps like TikTok off my phone lol if i was feeling bored i picked up a book instead of scrolling. I've now read so many books this year and it is SO true what you say about slowing down and taking time to enjoy a story. I'd say it's even helped me consume media like videogames or even movies in a more relaxed way instead of this FOMO aspect to them!

I pretty much only use KZread, these days. But something that helped me was gradually increasing my video playback speed until I was watching at 1.5x speed, or faster, depending in how fast or slow the original audio[ like 'cause different people have naturally faster or slower speech patterns] &/or any on-screen text goes by to begin with-it freed up so much extra time!!! (Plus, I've discovered that[ at least for me personally] it actually forces me to engage with things much more attentively so I actually get distracted less and really absorb or appreciate the experience more. However ..I don't recommend that anyone try and start out immediately at 1.5x or 2x speed, if you want to try this yourself-start slower and increase gradually, maybe not until after weeks of watching at 1.25x speed, only increasing playback speed once the faster speed starts seeming less rapid to you because your brain has adjusted to it and kind of normalized it in your mind or whatever.) It really helped things start to seem a lot more digestible and actually-achievable for me, personally-so getting into all the things I wanted to get to in a day didn't seem like as much of a daunting commitment around also still getting other actual-life type stuff done sometimes. ^^ Like, if you can watch a 30min video in only 15mins... That's 15 whole entire minutes more extra time you still have free to read or do something else afterward than you would have had before! And, sometimes, just feeling like you have the time to spare to invest in reading at all is the best way to start. (Basically, don't be afraid of sitting with things for longer stretches of time either longterm or shortterm -wise yes, but also don't be afraid of setting things down after only a short while and then coming back to it again later on for another short while sometimes too; feel free to get comfy finding whatever pace works for _you_ and/or the demands of your own life or brain or entertainment or whatever, individually! Checking off smaller goals-like one chapter, or 15 minutes-can feel really rewarding, it doesn't always have to be completing a whole entire book that let's you feel good about actually doing something[ like reading or whatever else] that you've been wanting to. Any forward progress is still progress; and sometimes just knowing that you can actually get to the end of something at all, whether it's just one sentence or just one chapter, that alone can really help the further off finish lines like the end of a whole entire book look like isn't so unattainably far away that it's impossible to see. Just being able to actually accomplish things you want to be accomplishing is what's important, not how soon or fast or how slow you personally get them done, as long as you're allowing yourself to find what works for *YOU* and you aren't just trying to force yourself to achieve things like someone or anyone else does: it's okay to be you, and to move at your own pace, based on whatever your own personal needs or wants are. 🙂)

Something I reminded myself a lot of when I got back into reading was that it is okay if you only read a little bit in a sitting. One chapter, or half a chapter, a day is more than I was doing. You get through books surprisingly fast when you realize this!

That thing was an absolute game-changer for me! I went on reading 62 last year, with 55 already this year. I never thought of myself as being a reader … that definitely changed. I used to read a lot as a kid, then I just kinda fell out of it as I grew up. I still read occasionally but not as much. After I became an adult I mainly got into manga/anime. I’ve been watching your videos for quite a few years now and your passion had always made me want to get back into reading books again, if only I had the time. Then one day it hit me, I can just… stop making excuses for not reading and start reading again anytime. So I did. And the time to do so naturally made itself available. I’m a lot busier now than I was back then yet I’m still managing to find time here and there to read, even if my very limited time means it takes me forever to get through a single book now. 😂 I’ve been thinking of tracking down some of the books I liked reading when I was a kid to reread them again 20 years later and see how they held up over the years. The Dragonkeeper series by Carole Wilkinson is one I want to go through. Looking it up I found out that it’s apparently getting an animated movie next year. For Merphy I recommend Grandad’s Gifts by Paul Jennings. I feel like it’s a childrens book you’d really enjoy.

In 2020 I made a resolution that I would start reading for fun again. Another thing that helped me get back into the habit was watching your, and other booktubers' videos, because it gets me excited to read and gives me book recommendations that I otherwise wouldn't have read. I've recently took a greater interest in reading. I think it started when I watched the 2005 movie version of Pride & Prejudice. I felt like so much was left out of the movie that was in the book so, having never read P&P I made up my mind to read the book and see just how much the movie omitted. I was flabbergasted! The movie I watched was more like a 'preview' of the book version. I then watched the 1995 version and liked that it was more like the book. Since then I've wanted to find (& read) the book for every one of my favorite movies. So that experience has motivated and inspired me to read more.

i literally read a crap ton of books at age 11, like war and peace, to spiderman, big nate, sk’s it, etc. i was a weird kid, so i only had that. even if i didn’t understand war and peace, i liked just understanding new words and syntax structures. haha, then i vowed to not read for a full decade since i was too addicted to books. i was like way too addicted, reading 400-500 pages a day, to right at this point in time, barely getting past 5-10 pages a day, or 30 on a good day. i hate it, all cuz of phone and other addictions. thank you for this video. imma throw away my phone lol.

Your second tip I have discovered is especially notable for me as I have difficulty visualizing characters, locations, objects, etc. It help watching something so I have the images in my head and I can just out the images with the plot in the books. With your third tip, I have no idea what these are called, but in my hometown there's these, boxes I guess where you can drop off a book and take home another one for free and they're mostly all located in neighborhoods. These might work as well for people looking to read more.

I got back in to reading by basically reading the books in Crash Course Litterature, where you'd read the book and then watch a little video by one of the Greenbrothers talking about the book. I skipped a few books (such as the Odyssey, having read Fry's retellings fairly recently,) and skimmed some I just didn't enjoy much for whatever reason. What I enjoyed about this way was that it gave me a few different types of books, and books I'd probably never have read on my own. It also gave incentive to finish the book to then watch the little video about it. The drawback being that I got this "let's get through this" mentality to reading, which isn't superb. But my overarching focus was to get in to the habit of reading. "Habits make lives", as someone probably said, so spending a month carving the habit of reading and you'll be able to benefit from it for years.

Totally agree with reading what you want to read not what you should read. This year I've only been reading fantasy and fairytale books because it's my favourite genre ever and favourite escapism mechanism. Last year, I read few different genres but mostly fancied reading romances and chick flicks, it was a hard year for me and light hearted books was what I needed to stay sane. If I was to read some 'heavy duty' books, i wouldn't read at all. I had a minor slump at the beginning of '22 but what has helped me was the revelation that I don't need to set aside special time for reading, I can just do it in between other activities. It may be super obvious but now I always read a book on the bus on my way to work, if I need to wait for something I also read, during lunch break whenever I cannot be bothered to talk to my workmates, i take my book and read. Out of sudden, reading has became a habit again and I read every day, between activities and in the evening because I love doing it. This mental barrier of allegedly having no time and the anxiety of having a massive book to read have disappeared because I find these little snippets of time to use for reading and feel rewarded by getting through a book, it feels like an accomplishment. I think many of us fear the time commitment necessary for reading and decide to not even start but once you realised you can actually find at least 10 minutes a day, it creates a habit and desire and ability to find even more time. I also love booktubers so much because they allow me to constantly feel inspired to read by recommending new titles so I can participate in a wider discussion. It feels like book club community and I love it, a lot of people I know don't read much or don't read similar books so I'm forever grateful for this community even though we are complete strangers spread across the globe but shared love for similar books is precious to me

Bang on with your advice, for me (to add to your points) a combination of two things that got me back into reading: 1. As you say - chase your interests! I realised that I stopped reading was because I was trying to read boring books I wasn’t actually interested in (stuff that I was ‘supposed to read’ as an adult). Realising that if I just read the stuff I read as a teenager (fantasy) I’d actually enjoy doing it (rather than being a chore and an extension of my day to day work) 2. To the point above, all your videos on Sanderson and mistborn that sounded really interesting (that I came across following your one piece videos) so thank you!! 3. Get a kindle (other e-readers are available)! Whilst a physical book is great, it feels like an ‘event’ to pick it up and the length may seem daunting’ Getting a kindle both made it really easy and convenient it also gamified reading

Currently reading the first book from A Song of Ice and Fire, and near by the end of it I can say that now I REALLY like to read books, fantasy rings way better to me rather than classic romanian literature.. which is mostly about the time of industrialization, romance, village life which is not bad (because I think that if I go back to them now that I'm a bit older, I'll like em I guess). What I like to do when reading (especially for ASOIAF) is to listen to themed music, it creates an ambiance and shuts all distraction while reading which for me means A LOT. Anyways, I'm dragging this more longer than I should but your video helped me with some aspects and insecurities that I had (mainly about how much I should read, how fast, etc), lesson is.. read what you like, read it in a manner that satisfies you and make it a part of your routine.

But then my mom forbid me to read fiction books, but those are the ones I enjoy the most (she sold or burned all my collections). I still read till this day, but not a conventional book by any means. I read webnovels, fanfictions, comics/manhwa/manhua with my phone bc it's easier to remove any traces. I don't know if I even capable of hating reading

Reading was a skill that was very much forced on me. As i kid i never really had a chance at choosing the books I wanted, but was handed a book and got told to "just read it" Skip ahead to my late teens, hardly ever reading, and i stumble across a single series that actually sounded very promising. well, the rest is history. I read a ton of basically everything now.

My nephew, in junior high (7th grade), was struggling in the Accelerated Reader program. For those unfamiliar this is a program where your reading level is assessed and you have to read a certain number of point; books were assigned points based on number of pages and the types of words used. He was not meeting his required points and because of it he was constantly grounded weeks at a time. I sit down and talk with him one day and he tells me that he doesn't like reading, every book in his school's library was boring. I wanted to change his mindset so I tell him that everyone likes to read but not everyone knows what they like to read. I remember that he liked the Harry Potter movies so I suggest he started reading the books, I also tempted him saying that the books were worth a lot of points. He began with the first book, whenever he didn't understand a word or if he wasn't sure what was going on in the book he would ask me. We would talk about the book almost every day, I also re-read the books to engage with him even more. When we began this routine he was starting his second semester of 7th grade, by the end of the school year he had read the first four books. The following school year he finished the series and on his own he found another series, The Ranger's Apprentice. I also read the series along side him following the same routine. Even in high school he never struggled to meet his required reading goals and found out what he like to read. I liked the advice of reading the books from movies that we like, it was exactly the same strategy I used with my nephew. I will go even further and add another tip, more geared towards children, and that is to engage with them. Children learn from parents and from the adults closest to them, the adults don't read they most likely won't either. In order to promote reading to a child engage with them, ask questions (even if you haven't read the book), have them ask you questions as they might not understand certain things. The more you discuss with them, the more excited they become, the more they will enjoy reading. That's it for my TedTalk, if anything remember that we all read everyday. We read the signs on the road. We read social media posts. We read things for work, for school, sometimes we even read subtitles in movies. We all like to read, but not everyone knows what they like to read.

Loved this video. Another thing that helps me to immerse myself more into the story I'm reading is asking myself random questions like people would ask at a book club. My method: writing down 20 - 30 questions and putting them in a random generator. Pulling a random question after every reading session or chapter. Thinking about the answer or writing it down ( I keep progress in the app "read more" and save those answers as highlights). That helps me to really immerse myself with the story and have actual check ins about how I'm feeling. And it's super fun as I wrote down some fun ones like: Who of the characters has which Hogwarts house and why? - If you could tell a person anything right now who would you tell what - or - how does it smell right now. 😁
