The dogfighting action scenes in this series are so unique because of how he incorporates g-forces into the action scenes. They add an additional level of drama and stakes-because we never think Spensa will die, but Spensa could absolutely pass out.

The one thing I really like about this book is the subvertion of cosmic horror at the end. Spensa faces the alien force of destruction that was warping her mind the whole book and when the cosmic horror has a glimpse of Spensa's mind and realise the annoyance he wants to destroy are actually sencient being, he freaks outs in horror. Human emphaty, to him, was like Cthulhu's madness to us

the way the delver was horrified when it found out it was killing actual intelligent beings and disappeared immediately after was a nice touch imo. I like it when the villain we thought was pure evil turns out to not be as bad as we thought

Sanderson has said that book 3 won't have much of the original crew in it, but he has seen that we want more from them. So we are getting 3 novellas alongside book 3, each with one of the book 1 crew as PoV character.

So the original draft of Starsight actually had most or all of Skyward flight coming with Spensa to Starsight, but Sanderson felt that it made Spensa's mission too safe. So he took them out of the book to emphasize Spensa's isolation. Also book 3, Nowhere, is supposed to be another very Spensa-focused tale, unfortunately, so I think you're not going to love it as much. Sanderson did feel that some people might forget the Skyward flight characters who are important to book 4 because we had two of these Spensa-focused stories in a row (particularly because Starsight was not planned to be this much Spensa-focused at the beginning, while Nowhere was), which is why he's doing the three Skyward novellas from the POVs of Skyward flight characters.

I didn't notice this as much but you are right in the fact that this book did a slight character shift. In the first book the M/C was the underdog (from something out of her control). Everything was focused around this and her insecurities that came from it. In a short amount of time she went from this to the hero of the story in a major way. It is a huge shift. I did enjoy Starsight more than Skyward though. I think in book 3 it will the best characters from book 1 and 2 and mush them together and the sky's the limit to where he could go with it... I can't wait.

I loved Starsight but my biggest complain is what you said of not seeing the other characters. I really really really loved the evolution on the relation between Jorgen and Spensa and I loved his whole character in general so I missed him so much in this book. And also I'm pretty sure Sanderson has said that book 3 is also mostly Spensa so I'm already waiting for book 4!

This is my favorite Sanderson series so far. (Haven't done Stormlight yet, but I have read both Mistborn Eras). I'm both thrilled and annoyed it's supposed to be 4 books long. Thank goodness he writes fast. I relate to Spensa a lot too. Didn't feel that diminish in the second book though, if anything her rougher edges were just smoothed off a bit. I really loved that fact that while she is maturing, her righteous indignation was still present and justified. And yeah, that scene at the end broke me too.

Great timing on posting this video -- I just finished reading it, too, a few days ago, and it was great to hear your analysis! When I first started reading it, I thought I might end up liking it more than Skyward, but since it turned out the books were so different I can't really compare them. They were both 5 stars for me, and each with their own strengths. And now I'm anxiously waiting for the next. If I'd known it was going to be such a cliffhanger, I probably would have waited a bit longer to read it.

After having just finishing Starsight, I can clearly and completely say that I loved Starsight and enjoyed it more than I did Skyward even though I also loved Skyward. This book's pacing and plot were engaging and immensely page-turning. The intrigue and world-building of the Superiority as well as the building of a realistic enemy in Winzik and Brade was done so well.

I could not stop listening (audible, GREAT voice actress btw!) and I cried so many times (yes especially the scene that punched you in the feels too). Funnily, I have the opposite "relating to characters"-feeling: had a hard time relating to teenage-defensive-and-moody-Spensa in Skyward, while I really enjoyed her more evolving world-view in Starsight. :) Also, can we talk about Doomslug?! It might be because of the voice actress for me, but I LOVE that little character so much!

I feel like Skyward/Starsight serve as a pretty good test for what you prioritize as a reader. If the thing that you love the most is worldbuilding and learning about different cultures and all the different ethical implications of certain societal structures, then Starsight is an amazing book and you'll probably like it more than however much you liked Skyward. But if you prefer character development for the MC and for side characters, and interpersonal drama and story developments, then you'll probably like Skyward more and be a bit disappointed by Starsight and the way that it set apart so many characters from the first book and focused more on plot development than character development when compared to the first book.

Sanderson wrote that book 3 will be a more character focused/laid-back book where Spensa needs to deal with things on her own, so I hope we get more from Detritus, but I'm hesitant to think it will be a major focus.

I feel like the writers on Star Trek Discovery need to bring on Sanderson ... then again I’m still on the first season, but they could learn a lot about pacing from him 😅 Totally on the same page with the old cast feeling very removed and M-Bot 💜💔

Personally, I felt like Spensa should have at least tried to have messages relayed to detritus through Alanik’s People when she sent encrypted messages to them. I just think that would have been a better option than her just not even attempting to contact anyone.

What I said might be a spoiler I'm not sure so I moved it down a bit. I loved the 2nd book, I didn't really like the "convenient" thing that happened in the beginning but after that it was wonderful.

Super happy to hear you enjoyed the book. I was so disappointed in this book. The whole cast is basically gone and replaced with characters, which (to me) read like cartoon characters straight out of a show on Cartoon Network. Could not take them seriously. Could not actually believe in their struggles, because they were just too silly. Maybe it's the YA-thing, but this was not just for me

I don’t know if someone else commented this but skyward is more of a prequel, similar to alloy of law, and starsight is the the start of the main trilogy, though skyward is foundational to the trilogy and you can’t really skip it. It totally threw me off when I read it and it bothered me a lot and still kinda bugs me

I was particularly bothered by the book's negligence to time dilation, tho. If Starsight is so far away from Detritus that you'll need a wormhole of some sort to get to it, in principle, the time on Starsight would not be the same as Detritus. For example, in the movie Interstellar, one hour on the alien planet is 7 years on Earth. I can see that it would pose a problem to the whole plot if Sanderson followed all laws of Physics (imagine Spin coming home and all people she knew were already dead and she's now kind of like the Legendary hero of her people). But that's just a thought tho, a great novel nonetheless.
