Too bad the Argo Buggy is worst in every single way in comparison to a modern Humvee. No window to stop rocks from hitting your face, a turret that can only shoot backwards, and not even that fast either.

@@mosser-wm3dx While an all-terrain vehicle could be useful, the ATV in Nemesis hardly looks like it would fit the bill: it can barely seat 3 people, one of which in a rather uncomfortable position, doesn't look like it has much cargo capacity, is open requiring an already breathable atmosphere and it doesn't even have a windshield so that goggles are required while driving. The Argo shuttle IS more useful than that little dune buggy that Patrick Stewart really wanted to have fun with.

In this situation, I'll agree with you. We all know the director was a noobie to trek and just wanted it to be cool. But you can list a thousand reasons why using this vehicle would be preferable to prepping a shuttle to do every little thing. Cargo space isnt really important, as i would imagine (speculating here) that they could just store things in a pattern buffer. Using a shuttle for everything is excessive if you want to just visually explore a place or ferry around for one reason or another.

The buggy on the Argo shuttle actually makes some sense if you think about it. If you and your team only have access to one shuttle and a portion of your team physically needs to go somewhere for some reason and your mothership is out of transporter range (or its transporters are jammed), and the other part of your team is using the shuttle as a base, the buggy can be used to drive the team over. And of course, there's always the fact that driving vehicles well beyond safe velocities is fun.

  • @benjaminseelking9483

Absolutly. Objective "Need" for groundvehicles like this Buggy might seem few and far between, so justifying their Inclusion into Shipequipment with Logic would be difficult, but if you include Psychologie into your Analysis, you start to understand that things like this "will be done"! Humans, evolved or not, are not satisfied with approximations. There is in practical Terms, no Need for Groundmissions if a Place you are at is uninhabitat. Probes and other Surveilancetech can give you most if not all Data, but that is not good enough for us. We want to fly there, land there and stand there. We want to smell the Air, feel the Sun, taste the Water of those foreign Worlds.

  • @VestedUTuber

@@benjaminseelking9483 Definitely. Also, any ship equipped with an industrial replicator can easily make any vehicle desired or needed, so it's not like it would be taking up space when not in use. I will note that even with an uninhabited planet, some ground missions might still be necessary. Depends on what your initial surveys find or if the planet's been selected for a colony site or other permanent base.

TMP did drag but I don’t know many people who wouldn’t consider the Enterprise reintroduction to audiences and grand entrance onto the silver screen a clear exception. Jerry Goldsmith’s iconic score which has become almost synonymous with Star Trek during the scene is also what makes the whole trip around Big E so magnanimous.

I actually like the idea of Federation land vehicles. It would have been cool to see a buggy in the sleek starfleet aesthetic, or even something akin to an APC that had a transporter on-board. After all, ground vehicles are about as outdated as shoes: sure, they're primitive and lame, but they work.

  • @OllamhDrab

Well, the Argo buggy really did look like you could stick a canopy and who knows what else on there: my guess is they basically stripped it down as much as possible so there'd be as little to see or find as possible if something went wrong while in dodgy Prime-Directive territory cleaning up android parts somewhere fancy tech might not even work well thanks to ion storm stuff. Pull cowlings and panels, and voila, it doesn't look *that* different from the local vehicles at a brief glance. I;m pretty sure "Hello, we're space aliens, check out our funky ride," wasn't the impression they'd be going for. Or why use wheels at all. :)

Hey, what do you expect, unless your talking about the real life space shuttle, most stories don't care to spend much time on them. Argo does have practicality when you consider the Dominion War just ended. Even in Today's military, we have all sorts of drones, but being up in the air like that makes them sitting ducks, so a low to the ground vehicle would be necessary on occasion.

What is interesting is some of the shuttles have nacelles built into the hull, instead of on pylons. Even some pre Defiant models. Just a pity they didn't scale it up to make capital ships without the need for nacelles to be on pylons.

  • @Swiftbow

    @Swiftbow

Arguably it's a safety issue. The warp nacelles produce unholy levels of radiation. One can only assume that the scaled-down, lower speed models in the shuttles produce considerably less, and can thus be internally shielded with plating instead. (Or it's also possible that the shuttles without visible nacelles are simply not warp-capable.)

After all it was the final glue that molded the birth of the federation and almost lead the Vulcans from leaving the coalition.

Lore Reloaded, with all your talk about the Starfleet-Gallifreyan alliance, I have two other things to add: 1. There actually is a official (though not stated to be canon) multi-part comic book issues that had a Dr. Who - Star Trek TNG Crossover with the Cyberman and the Borg. 2. The only potentially Starfleet ship that has official stated to have space folding to make the ship bigger on the inside was Kal Dano's ship. (Seen in ENT and STO A New Dawn expansion). P.S. Do you plan on doing a episode on Kal Dano and his ship sometime in the near future? It may support your theory.

To be fair, while not specifically canon, Kal Dano's plot doesn't actually contradict any normal canon, and wraps up all the little details really nicely.

@@LoreReloaded I presume some of the differences are largely cosmetic changes (to match the style of the ship they're attached to) and some to reflect different duty specs and updates. They're space vans, you can have a lbasic panel van Ford Transit, a long Ford Transit, a tall Ford Transit, a fire engine Ford Transit, a heavy hauling Ford Transit, an ambulance one, a Ford Transit bus, a nice camper, etc etc. New fenders for 1983! Basically many could be essentially the same shuttle, cosmetics could in many cases be as easily one thing as another, so make em match the mothership a little.

So they are used to transport people and goods to 1 place to another. If only there was something like a device that would transport people and goods to 1 place or another almost instantly, like a transporter. If it's not safe to transport to a place it is clearly much safer to use a small craft to take there. Or if a something is too dangerous to use a transporter then maybe the 2 ships should dock with each other instead of sending small inefficient shuttles.

Probably a safe assumption. The Enterprise D's one seemed essentially to be just a detachable lounge/ambassadorial meeting space for pretty specific kinds of meetings, thus not fightey at all, ...they never used it I guess cause it was a lot of studio set space or something and there's already ways to just beam people up for all the lounges on the D. "Lieutenant, report to the Emergency Battle Lounge. Man the gelato machine. " :) The E's, on the other hand, may have been a lot more multipurpose but maybe near the neighborhood of 'Spacious short-range runabout' territory. If it were mainly built to be combat effective you'd a) maybe be too threatening and b) Have to look back and wonder why they didn't use it in some other situations.

That would be because it was never actually shown in an episode, beyond a glimpse of it on some of Voyager's computer displays. The footage shown here is a mixture of a CGI launch sequence that was made but never used in-show, and fanproject work based on Sternbach's original design.

Funny, how the pre-TOS discovery series shuttles look much more TNG-like than the TOS shuttle the Shatner's Enterprise was equipped with... Note that i call by actor's name, not the captain the actor portrayed. Kelvin timeline is just as screwy in that regard. The time period in question is the 5-year mission TOS, not films.
