The Intrepid Class ship is one that can have some debate among fans. What effectively is a great scout ship and a long range explorer - it can be a great ship.. if you ignore a lot of the inconsistencies.

Voyager's problems, unique to Voyager were 1: It was not outfitted or supplied to go into deep space. It was out Maquis hunting. 2: It got heavily damaged during it's abduction by the Caretaker array and wasn't fully functional within normal parameters until it got back to Starfleet space, and the evershifting patchwork could also account for their inconsistencies in how fast the ship could go at any time. 3: Even in what the Federation considered to be Deep Space, Starfleet has space stations and freighter/cargo vessels to handle periodic resupply among a deep space fleet's support vessels. Deep Space 9 was one of 13 to bare the Deep Space Designation in the TNG/DS9/Voyager era. If Voyager had the support fleet/Deep Space station, proper supplies, and no damage she'd have been an excellent ship and had no problems functioning in deep space..

The Intrepid-class was,by far,the worst thing that was ever inflicted on Starfleet by Starfleet. Far from its ugly looks, the class was clearly ill-prepared for the challenges inherent in typical Starfleet operations:it was too weak to be an effective, single-ship combatant, too few scientific assets to be an effective exploration ship, few concessions towards serving a diplomatic function and too overly dependent upon Starfleet support and not sufficiently....self-sufficient. The Intrepid-class was the polar opposite of the Defiant-class in that the design was too focused on one mission or another and lacked the balance to be a truly effective tool for use in the unexpected and seemingly unlikely situations that another class, say a Constitution is well-equipped to tackle.

Although i dont see how it could be possible with the contact Discovery has had with Starfleet in the time period shown.

Can I offer a suggestion as to why the Intrepid may include a landing gears. It could be use to land on a surface to conduct long term research much like our scientific base on the arctics. It lands on a planet, conduct extensive research on a planet that would take months if not years, before leaving going onto the next planet. No need to put up a permanent base you may have to abandon, when you have a livable starship that can leave at a moments notice. It could also explain why its called a long range science ship, for it would land on planets outside of Federation space to conduct research, and be able to leave quickly if needed for they find the planet is claimed by someone else. Also explain why it was not design for long range deep space mission because its not a long range exploring craft. Its a ship design to conduct research on phenomenon Starfleet exploration ships discover and then come back if turn to be hostile. Or conduct research in enemy territory to collect information without the enemy knowing it, and if they do, it has the speed and firepower to escape. This also suggest it could be design as a mobile base ship where Starfleet setup forward operations in enemy territory to conduct raids, or spy on enemy forces while powered down a planet in their space. And in combat, it can serve as a troop transport to planets or stations where transporters are not option, and neither a fragile shuttles. Can also sever as an admiral flagship. As it was stated Dominion tactics were to force a lot of firepower on single ships with those famous or carrying an admiral on board, and it must be a lot more to hit if its small, fast and even hit has powerful sheilds strong enough to survive a borg encounter.

I believe you make many good points here. As long as the Federation continues to operate without cloaking technology, being able to put entire starships down on the cluttered surface of a planet full of potential atmospheric or geological anomalies offers the best chance to hide from sensor detection. I can imagine many ways to make use of such a tactic against enemies who can't follow, such as a Romulan D'deridex class. Sensor sweeps might find a beached Intrepid, but they'd likely need to be already looking closely at that particular planet for whatever reason, as opposed to any other large Federation vessel standing out like a sore thumb in the cold black of space where the enemy can't help but know they're there as soon as they come within scanning range.

Yeah, it's almost steampunk-y elements combined with art deco trains or something, really. The top of the saucer is a really fascinating design. The overall design is marred imho only by the total disregard for Roddenberry's hitherto canon principle that warp nacelles must work together via line of sight between the warp field grills. Voyager has no inner warp field grills at all. Also, the moveable nacelles never had any believable purpose, even in the context of the show. I like the way the final design looks, but for consistency I prefer the prototype Sternbach model with the runabout style nacelles. I also love the more consistent aesthetic Sternbach used on his prototype -- the primary hull and longer nacelles were a bit more angular and Voyager looked 100% art deco, like a streamlined Mayan temple. It was a really fascinating and beautiful design, if less soft. Just my opinion, but I think it would've set a better tone for the show. The bright, soft aesthetic of the finished ship was totally at odds with the scenario, and in the long run that mood sort of won out in the writers' room apparently.

Or movie. I've always wondered the fate of the various elements of the crew. I would imagine the Marquis would be pardoned with the option to remain Starfleet personal or return to civilian life. How hard would the Equinox survivors be formally punished? What about the Doctor and his status and rights? Seven of Nine's and Chakotay's relationship? Voyager's ending left so many unanswered questions. And while books and other media may have created answers, they're not canon.

Lore. Need to remember something easily missed. Voyager was fresh out of space dock, and its shakedown. Its final crew was still being assembled at DS9 before going for its first mission. Like many StarFleet ships, shes a multi mission ship, and also, that most ships are launched, unfinished. Lots of deck space left vacant to allow upgrades later depending on the mission needs. If i remember right, Enterprise D, at farpoint, had something like 40% of its internal volume empty, still waiting to be assigned. So that would explain why Voyager has such a hard time out alone in the Delta Quadrant, she simply wasn't equipped, or fully fitted out yet. This also explains why she only had 40 torpedoes to start with. Also as she went along, (off camera) the crew found ways to upgrade her as they went, in science, tactical, and self repairing/refueling capabilities.

To be fair, in one episode, they literally set down on a planet, to completely change out the nacelles. And it's a Long-Range Science Vessel, not explorer. Technically the Galaxy-Class was an Exploration Cruiser. Intrepids are versitle enough for the role just fine, but their original purpose was to go to anomalies, whether that's an odd planet or spacial, etc. Other science ships like the Nova-Class were designed for the same, but only for short-range missions, and never into dangerous or unknown territory outside Federation space, hence why the Intrepid-Class was so well armed and self-sufficient. Voyager was the THIRD Intrepid-Class vessel. Intrepid, Bellerophon, Voyager.

My head cannon was that the Intrepid class was made to be a long range light cruiser, meant to patrol and explore the outer reaches of Federation space. Voyager launched somewhat incomplete, since its mission at the time didn’t require an astrometrics lab. They were going after maquis, and the combat systems were ready, so away they went. The ship had powerful deflector systems and sensors as standard equipment to help with patrols, and through time Starfleet realized that they actually had a great science ship on their hands, so the class's primary mission was reevaluated and changed to a science vessel. As for Voyager's fuel issues, my thought is that constant Kazon attacks and other unusual hazards in the Delta quadrant put a strain on them. Plus, just getting pulled into the Delta quadrant left them badly damaged and understaffed. That probably would have cost a lot of antimatter to repair, so they started out with a low tank to begin with, running on fumes trying to get home.

I think the Bellerophon being used as the ship to carry high ranking officials into Romulan space was more of a statement than anything. If the Intrepid class really was a science vessel, or at least a warship that daylights under the Federation veil of a science vessel, it would show that the Federation was an entity of peace and exploration. I love this video tho, even tho it was made 2 years ago. This channel never gets old :,))

Yes starfleet vessels aren't warships but they're not civillian either. You don't get portholes on coast guard ships (I think?) Windows = no unless its a purely recreational ship. Voyager (feels like smaller, cozier Galaxy, i.e. not a luxury liner, but "just" a millionaire villa in space) 4. NX (because it perfectly captures the magic of advanced, but still relatively primitive space travel, it's like a space-analog of a submarine, and submarines are uncomfortable and clunky and fragile, but immensely cool, and I would love to have one, if I can't have a Galaxy. it's like... yeah, F-22 is awesome, but if you have Bf-109, you can still feel the air and winds and currents, and you FEEL you're up there, not just see it from perfectly cushioned high-tech couch that computes away all of what that makes you realize "oh yeah, I'm actually flying!")

They really should have had full time people (Star Trek fans, especially) to keep track of continuity. They said they had only 37 photon torpedoes onboard and no way to replace them when they were gone, but fired a lot more than that. Why couldn't they replicate torpedo casings? They should have just said Voyager had 200+ torpedoes onboard from the beginning since they ignored the "37" anyway. I don't see a big deal about Voyager's mission profile. It was a 24th Century version of the Constitution Class. It had science and defensive roles.

Or, explain how they got around the limitation. I assumed it was part of the same problem that resulted in holodeck and replicator rationing, which they dealt with by finding friendly ports in the delta quadrant. Replicating the shells and avionics for the torps would be fairly trivial for their demonstrated ability, arming them with the pinch of antimatter necessary for the payload might have been the trickiest part.

Gary C. ...but here you're kind of touching on to the larger issue of most of star trek: why do they even need any cargo (bays) and supplies, as long as they've got energy and replicators? i mean, even if you accept the "replicated goods/foods are not as complex and nuanced as real-grown/manufactured ones", it still raises problems, because any needs can be covered, and manual production becomes pure luxury. why do torpedo launchers even exist? why not just have replicators in their place, replicating warheads on demand? how does Quark (or anything in Ferengi Trade Federation) make money, if basically the only and ultimate resource is energy and everything else can be made out of that? how does anyone accept anyone else charging for anything any bit more than just the cost of energy it takes to replicate it? why does anyone manually manufacture anything except energy and replicators? how can Bajor have food problems and why does it bother with soil farming? why, instead of sucking a core of their moon, don't they just build a station tapping into their star for basically infinite energy therefore infinite everything? And for that matter, why doesn't anyone else? Why doesn't the galaxy-wide economy work on stars, with planets just being habitable spaces, analogous to just apartment buildings? Why does anyone mine any minerals? Why did the cardassians need an ore mining operation and ore processing facility, instead of, at worst, taking the ore, dematerializing it for its (maybe exceptional) energy content, and then rematerializing into the processed metals (at worst), or even the final goods of any kind? etc etc etc...

MidnightSt they intended the whole "lost in the delta quadrant" arc to last at most one season, with the season finale being them getting home for a fresh start in the alpha quadrant for season two, but they liked the "ship lost in space" angle and kept with it for the series run. So when they first said that there were very few torpedoes, they meant it, but then of course could not get away with so few being used in plot points for the 7 seasons.

I mean... it's not the Galaxy Class, parading around the galaxy with everything and everyone on board. The Intrepid class is capable of and, of course intended for, long range exploration but Voyager was originally sent on a tactical search and detain mission. Perhaps she was not outfitted with everything needed for a long range exploratory mission, but found herself on one anyway. As is expressed many times, Janeway and the crew did the best they could with what they had. I think this is the best answer for the apparent inadequacies of the Intrepid class' scientific accouterments, especially as we see with Voyager. This could be simply that it is a multi-task ship with the capability of being a long range exploration vessel but Voyager was simply not loaded and refit for that roll on her first mission. It makes sense that Voyager was equipped for the task at hand when it set off... tracking down the Marque ship in the Badlands. It would thus not have all the bells and whistles and fuel (or indeed expanded fuel tanks) required for a long range exploration mission even though the ship was capable of being easily modified for such a task. This is just like how we see the Miranda Class in a variety of different configurations. In fact I would posit that Starfleet seeing the Sovereign Class just over the horizon as a Galaxy/Ambassador/Excelsior "all your eggs in one basket" replacement, so too did they look at their aging fleet of (uncountable) Miranda (and Oberth) Class starships and think "yeah... we should get on replacing those soon." I would not be surprised to see future Star Trek Series (if we get another one that's not a prequel) where the Intrepid Class is seen everywhere just like the Miranda, Excelsior, and Oberth classes were seen in TNG and DS9.

  • @Qardo

You need to keep in mind. Voyager was FIRST in her class. She was designed to be long range ship. Yet her FIRST MISSION was going out into the Badlands to investigate the Maquis raiders. She was not equipped for a major long range mission. You forget to keep things into context. And also forgot that when Voyager was built. This was before the Dominion War. Sure there maybe contradictions with some tech specs. Yet you forget the history and the reason that Voyager did not have certain amenities that most likely her sister ships would have. And really she barely been out of drydock when she was seen at DS9 getting her crew and getting orders to head to the Badlands As I stated before. Was a short trip for Voyager.

I know I'm obviously very late to this party, but I just found your channel a couple days ago and have been binging lol so anyways, from a situational standpoint, the fuel and supply issues on board Voyager make absolute sense. You're in completely uncharted space (yes, ostensibly exactly what it's designed for, but it's also designed to have a defined start and end date to it's missions, and a defined backup network just in case). What that means, from a command standpoint, is that you figuratively don't know when your next meal is going to be. Were I of a logistical mindset, I would also constantly be worried about making sure we have enough supplies and fuel. Also, pretty sure it was stated in Voyager that it wasn't exactly outfitted from the get-go for a long distance solo mission, since it was tasked with simply hunting down some Maquis ships, so we can't even assume it started with a full complement of supplies and fuel to start with. Uncertainty breeds caution, I guess, is the takeaway from this ramble

Its a sports car of a ship. When compared with other classes such as the galaxy, nebula and akira classes. It has a small crew, small weapons stowage (well under a 100 photon torpedoes), relatively small amount of cargo storage, only one med-bay as well as a very limited medical staff. The crew scale effects the abilities of all departments. The Galaxy class has over 1,000 people on board, as such has ample staff for any situation. The intrepid, not so much. However it is fast and with limited endurance, very powerful. For both combat and scientific emergencies. It seems highly unlikely such a vehicle would be intended as a long range anything. It does seem however to make an excellent security ship. Intended as a quick reaction alert (cold war RAF) or a pursuit ship (Blakes 7 Terran Federation). As it can run down any ship in the quadrant with its speed and firepower. However with its limited phaser charge and torpedo supply and can't sustain combat for days like a larger ship.

Hey man, love your series, love you breakdowns, and I'm not here to insult you. Just had a few ideas. 1)Why have it landing-capable? Lots of reasons. Geological survey, emergency landing (like the saucer section of the Galaxy), or the ability to mass-evacuate (instead of having to beam everyone up.) All seem realistic ideas to me. 2) Why was the ship constantly needing fuel if it could go 3 years between refuelings? 2 ideas. One, the Caretaker's 'trip' was NOT gentle and kicked the ship's ass something fierce, it isn't unreasonable to assume that the ship lost a lot of fuel in the exchange, and couldn't get a full refill. Second: the ship was constantly in battle and taking damage from unknown spacial anomalies. The Delta quadrant was far more hostile than what the federation was used to, so the ship would be forced to replicate a LOT more parts for repair. This would use up more energy far more quickly than normal. 3) Ship's mission? I always heard it was a long-range scout, and so it probably had a stellar cartogrophy that was up to the task of long-range scanning. However, when 7of9 came along with her borg technology know-how, they could have built an 'astrometrics' that normal federation couldn't have built at the launch of the ship (IIRC, they do say astrometrics incorporates borg technology.) So astrometrics was a more advanced stellar cartogrophy that Federation didn't have the technology for when designed. Easy fix. Or it was a long range scout designed for geological surveys? What with its ability to land. Just another possibility I'm throwing out there. Just a few thoughts. Again, love the series, and you go far more in depth than I could.

Nice video! Now my thoughts, and headcanon: Regarding landing on planets, in the case of a crisis where the ship is critically low on fuel and supplies, landing the entire ship on the planet would allow the crew to save tremendous amounts of power from the ship, while providing shelter from the elements of the planet. Worst case scenario, it becomes their new home. Simply put, regarding the lack of astrometrics, it is very possible that, considering he stated that he would have it installed, it is possible that parts of the ship were never installed, because of the Dominion War, much like the battlebuilt Galaxy class ships from the war. It could also be why Voyager seems so effective in combat, not to mention why it would need far more supplies than a conventional 3-year mission. The fact that the landing gear was included, could be for troop deployments, turning the Intrepid class into a massive troop transport. There could very well be a need for a landing craft Starship, since armored hovercraft, and other ground vehicles, would be needed. I know there is no Alpha cannon on any kind of ground vehicle usage by anyone, I just imagined that is because everything you see on-screen is often in confined spaces, not wide-scale planetary invasions. Finally, the fact that we may not see them, does not necessarily mean they don't exist. In fact, don't I see the cardassians firing balls of orange energy? The most interesting point, is if the reference to Voyager being modified is from Torres... well, she was the expert on the Dreadnought Cardassian nuke, and for being how brilliant she with cardassian tech, she would probably know how they work to the finest detail. Either way, love the video! I also would love to hear your thoughts on my rebuttal.

CHAKOTAY: We've like to enhance the Astrometrics lab. It hasn't been upgraded since Voyager left spacedock. KIM: I'll start right away. CHAKOTAY: I've assigned Seven of Nine to work with you. She's agreed to provide us with all the navigational data for this area she acquired during her time with the Borg. Is there a problem? KIM: No. No problem. A WWII destroyer escort was the opposite of that. As an escort for convoys, it didn't have to be fast. To chase down subs didn't require speed either. They were in fact stripped down destroyers and not good enough for fleet action. They had fewer and smaller guns, since subs had no armor. A real destroyer, which wasn't exactly hard hitting, would pound it to dust.

The Intrepid is one of my favorites aesthetically, I like the longer saucer section. I remember hearing somewhere that the point of landing the ship was generally for long-term geological studies of a planet -- rather than keep the ship in orbit and consume additional fuel, it could land and shut down systems that were essential in space but not on a planet's surface. It would also cut out atmospheric interference for deep, detailed scans of a planet's interior. Out of universe, I think the reason there were conflicting details about Voyager's long-range capabilities vs. the apparent difficulty of operating it in the Delta quadrant was entirely because the writers wanted her to be a very capable ship, but they also wanted the drama of the crew struggling to keep the ship running -- thus why they always had fuel issues. In universe, maybe there's something about the Delta quadrant that makes Voyager use a lot more fuel than normal... Or maybe there was damage during their initial journey and dealings with the Caretaker that caused fuel issues that wouldn't normally occur with an Intrepid-class vessel.

My favourite use for the intrepid class (in Armada II) is for capturing Borg construction ships early in the game when they are undermanned (underdroned?). The ship has weapons capable of stripping the shields of the constructors without overly damaging the vessels and carried sufficient crew to board and capture them. The large crew complement also made them more effective versus Borg auto assimilators than Defiant class ships though less so when dealing with spheres.

I haven't done much research into it, so this is just a guess. But it may be that the astrometrics gear is only installed right at the end of construction of the ship as when it's installed it is also configured to be able to see through any electromagnetic abnormalities from possible minor flaws in other parts of the ship. Each ship would have it's own set of flaws so you can't have a completely standardized configuration. So it may be that they had most of the viewing gear in there and tested with basic sensors, and then when it's finally installed, they took some time to replicate or install the gear and have someone read through the Encyclopedia Britannica sized manual on how to fine tune the thing. Basically. There's noise from the rest of the ship that needs to be ignored on the extremely high sensitivity gear from Attrometrics, this can only be tuned after everything else is in place. The ship was sent out in a hurry to help the ship in the badlands so it may not have been installed yet.

Had they not blown the time to home so brutally, they could have had a lot of fun with the series and not had to be so, contrived. But I digress... I think that the Intrepid class should have been more prominent in DS9 after it was added to canon for ST: Voy. Besides the Defiant class, the Intrepids were pretty much the most interesting starship design until the Prometheus showed up.

The way I look at Voyager's warp engine inconsistencies is that it was launched with factory specs (a sustainable cruise of w9.975) but that the fancy new tricyclic drive was irreparably damaged when they got thrown across the galaxy in "Caretaker". Thereafter, the ship could at best manage w9.9 for a few moments, but tended to cruise around w6 (which we saw a lot)

  • @SkyCharger001
    @SkyCharger0015 жыл бұрын

Cruise speed of warp 9.975: the episode this is taken from showed that this was voyager's design spec max cruising speed. (and that Janeway believed this to be an overly cautious estimate) long-range maintenance: Voyager's situation counts as ludicrous range and thus falls squarely outside starfleet's logistical definition of long-range.

One thing i really would have loved to see with Voyager, is that after its time in the Delta Quadrant, and all its tweaks and upgrades, it should have looked different, like it had bits of alien tech hanging off it. Instead it came back looking like it just left the showroom floor. So many episodes Voyager took heavy damage and then it goes back to looking brand new again. Maybe give it a few mismatched panels, a different deflector, some crap hanging off the warp engines, and some custom Delta Quadrant weapons. Make it look like the crew had to improvise with the ship. Janeway even commented on the limited number of torpedos and no way to replace them, so have the crew come up with something else. Make a deal with some aliens or something. I certainly would have loved to see some episodes of Voyager being done up than exploring the Doctor and Seven of Nines social skills. And don't get me started on Fair haven!!!!! From a merch standpoint that would have been good as well, because then fans could have bought the different seasonal variants of Voyager.

But it could completely rebuild several decks in a week or two while in space, converting hastily installed holodecks back into regular systems (Hirogen). And it apparently had it's own shuttle construction bay (that also made torpedoes). That's probably why power and fuel was an issue early on, they had to use resources for battle damage repairs, besides which as pointed out in other comments they had left for a short range mission while still being outfitted.

You mention the "eco friendly to subspace" info about the variable nacelle geometry. As this was the plotline of a late TNG episode where the current tech of warp drives was damaging a heavily used passage of space, which then brought about a warp 5 limit in several sectors. I'd always assumed that the Intrepid class variable nacelle's were an early method of combatting this.

The thing about the intrepid class ships is that while they do seem Multipurpose and being long range yet wasn't seen being able to refuel and such during Voyager easily with the crew bartering most of the time, Voyager did launch from DS9 with a mission involving the Maqui in the badlands so that wasn't a long range mission and they took on supplies for such a mission.

I think Stellar Cartography is a standard unit attached to all Starfleet starships. The USS Enterprise D has one (it was shown in the movie Star Trek:Generations) and it was also mentioned in Star Trek: First Contact. I think the most defining attribute that seperates Voyager’s Astrometrics and Stafleet’s Stellar Cartography was that a) the Astrometrics were built with integration of some Delta Quadrant’s technology, mainly Borg and b) Voyager’s Astrometrics serves as a long range sensors and long range navigational system as well.

You've got to remember that Voyager had just been lauched on it's maiden Voyage, and a Captain who'd been on the fast track to Admiral was in command, and they were on a special but selective mission. It probably didn't have every system installed or completely ready to go. They clearly had a form of stellar cartography else they'd not be able to navigate lol

The Intrepids' 'maximum sustainable warp of 9.975' was likely an error (was mentioned all of two or three times in dialogue). In several episodes, we were told that Voyager could maintain Warp 9.75 for about 12 hours. Warp 9.9 resulted in ship nearly shaking itself to pieces after just about 30 seconds. When you think about it... Paris also mentioned to Amelia Earhart that Voyager can do 9.9 (4 billion miles per second - aka, 21 473 times speed of light). If it were able to sustain 9.975 at all, it would be able to get back to Earth in just under a week. 9.75 seems more 'consistent' when contrasted to the Enterprise-D which could reliably maintain Warp 9.6. Up until the USS Prometheus was constructed (that ship was able to cruise at Warp 9.9 without trouble for VERY long periods of time). To be fair, if Voyager's sustainable cruise velocity was indeed Warp 9.975, I wouldn't have an issue with it as it would illustrate exponential jumps in science and technology consistent with a collection of over 150 different alien species working together. Warp 9.975 however would have meant the ship would need to have been thrown over 200 million Ly's away from Earth to get back in 75 years... which probably should have been done in such a manner. The Federation was originally supposed to have been exploring other galaxies by the TNG time... but this was changed (to make it 'closer to home').

Voyager's initial mission was only for 6 weeks to find and capture the Maquis, so they didn't have full supplies in the cargo bays and possibly not even full deuterium tanks. The 6 week mission was cited by Janeway as the reason they didn't have a ship's counselor on board. Also, constant maintenance requires trained people to carry it out, and something like 35 of the original crew of 141 were killed as a result of The Caretaker pulling Voyager to the other side of the galaxy. And in "The 37's" Janeway asks Chakotay how many people they could lose (if they were allowed to stay behind) and he tells her that he doesn't think they can operate the ship with less than 100 people, and if too many wanted to stay behind they could all end up stuck there. So do the math and you can see that she'd have been pretty screwed without the replacement crew members Chakotay provided (the crew of the Val Jean).

Honestly the Intrepid Class is one of my favourite ships (and the main reason i watch Voyager). I think its purpose was to be a smaller and more economic option for first contacts and deep space exploration in comparison to the galaxy class. It hat a much smaller crew way better sensors and the most advanced computer systems. Its speed and realiability was useful to avoid dangerous confrontations, hence its weaons were not made for battles. Also it was highly comfortable. In case of the dominion war i would use it as a ambassador ship or (nad more often) as an AWAC due to its very good sensors.

Given the many things tacked on in Voyager and the constant theme of the Intrepid class being a multi role vessel. Plus the name. I think that's what it was. Given the time it was produced and Starfleets reluctance to make real warships, the Intrepid was likely produced to fit any role for any mission in a short amount of time.

Great video! I didn't really like the Intrepid class until after ST:VOY ended. For some reason while I hated Voyager, I loved the Bellerophon. Inconsistencies aside, the ship was kinda like a swiss army knife, always popping out something new when it needed something new... probably due to sub-par writing and network interference. Despite what we were told on the show, I tend to look at the Intrepid class as a class of high-speed diplomatic courier vessels, small in number. To me, it seems to be a ship designed for the peacetime era prior to the Borg and Dominion threats. During the Dominion War, they didn't seem to have much use for them (which is why we didn't see many in that war) other than as an aforementioned diplomatic courier and they were apparently redesignated as such when Starfleet went to war.

I think when the term long range science/research is used it means it can do it all, but the intrepid still would have been equipped for a specific mission profile. For instance if the ship was sent to a specific area of space to survey then its equipment would be designed for mapping that area, survey planets and take relevant samples as well as research potential first encounters as well as ruins of extinct species. many labs would have been general use and the ship would be looking for anything interesting and sent a specialist ship to carry out more detailed scanning. Voyager was sent out on a search mission not survey. It would have no need for an astrometrics lab setup as the area had likely been scouted. What would have been needed was powerful long range sensors to locate the missing ship. Everything else was likely in a default configuration.

  • @jhmcd2

Honestly, I think the ship was a deep space, long range scout. That would be the best explanation for everything we see, her weapons output, the fact that the crew seems unfamiliar with its equipment (I would trust Janeway over anyone else as she is the main original character assigned to the ship) and why it would be used for such a high profile mission to Romulus, besides the Voyager shout out. Also, landing on planets does make since when you use the scout theory. Allowing the ship to land on planets instead of just rely on transporters means it could set up bases without worrying about being detected in orbit.

One quibble as to resource problems with Voyager. Whether or not it was designed for long range use, it was outfitted for a short-term mission right out of spacedock, so it wasn't fully stocked or outfitted. Also it got pretty torn up in the Delta Quadrant, including a ridiculous number of warp core breaches and ejections, so it ended up losing lots of fuel as a result, and also didn't have an ideal stock of gelpacks.

I think one can make a good argument why they had supply issues in Voy when one consideres that they first of all weren't on a long range mission so likley they weren't stocked for one then they got into pretty intenste fighting right away which takes it's toll. Then add to them haveing several crew related issues they might lack certain key personell to keep stuff running as smooth as it could as well as constantly needing to feed the holoemitters for Medical and so forth. The three years estimate is likley one based on a fully stocked, well chosen crew on a prepared and designed deep space mission that isn't expected to see heavy combat.

The Intrepid class starship was one of my favorites. I remember a long time ago I read a bio of the Intrepid class, that stated... The Intrepid class was a long-range Tactical ship. Poised to replace the galaxy-class Starship along the Romulan border, for its high maneuverability at high Warp. Since I read this, 20 years ago, they have thus changed its bio. Basically was a compact Galaxy class.

Then their was the affair at the Caretakers Array leaving the ship with lots of damage.

I think that voyager was supposed to be a long range science vessel, but there's long range (to the federation borders in the alpha and beta quadrants where resupply is 10 or so weeks at high warp) and then there's long range exploration which goes vastly beyond those borders to chart new space like the galaxy, excelsior, and (in it's own time) constitution classes were designed for, well-armed with scientific facilities but also huge and full of provisions, fuel, etc. the intrepid class was the class of ship that you'd send after the long-range exploration cruisers were done with an area for deep-diving scientific investigation of space phenomena and other interesting science stuff where the exploration cruisers were sent to chart such phenomena and make friends with the discovered indigenous intelligent life after they become warp capable. you can compare to a short-range science vessel like the oberth and nova classes which were much smaller and required constant maintenance and refueling at various space docks.

I think the Intrepid's main use was probably planned to be paroling the borders of Federation space. That's where it'd need to spend significant amounts of time out of space dock, and would benefit most from the high speeds as they'd have to cover a lot of distance quickly compared to the other ships of the line.

Voyager was on it's maiden voyage suggesting that some systems weren't completely finished (ie. Astrophysics) or even installed. Plus I think it was the first ship to use bio or organic power gell packs and had never been thoroughly tested for longevity. Usually a maiden voyage is to check & test mechanical systems for all around dependability then return to dock for completion. This concept is true today. No one builds an engine and installs it completely without a test.

It’s possible that Voyager was meant to have a Stellar Cartography lab but as She was stated to Have been rushed into launch in order to look for the missing marquis ship it was not finished as It was deemed non-mission-critical and then Harry Kim took that unused space and designed the full Astrometric Lab to better fit Voyager’s unique need being so far out, Still contrived but maybe a little less? As for mission profile I would say probably scouting/exploration and quick response force

So a bigger astrometric is needed to make a big picture of the Delta quadrant from all this?

Intrepid class - fast light cruiser. Ideal for exploration without the resource drain of a larger ship yet capable of completing majority of missions normally reserved for a ship of the line, Galaxy, Nebula, Ambassador, etc... Tactically it's no slouch sporting the latest weaponry normally found on a Galaxy. It's high warp means it can act as a scout and be able to retreat, outrunning adversaries that outgun the Intrepid class. Now this is going to be controversial however I dont believe the Intrepid class was meant to be long range at all. It was meant to supplement larger ships in a cheaper yet highly advanced package that Starfleet was able to produce in higher quantities.

I feel like a better explanation for why resources were a more prevailing issue for voyager would be that while the ship “could” run for 3 years without refuelling, that estimation isn’t taking account for them running almost constantly at near maximum warp and running the EMH as their primary physician. I can’t imagine that the designers would account for that sort of power consumption in their estimations.

  • @TheCyberloki

I would also go for the long range Exploration Rolle but not like an big ship which does flyby but to come back later and investigate things further. For that the ship could land on an Planet and do research from the surface. Much like an small station. The Aerowing Runabout would support that kind of usage cause it is obviously build for atmospheric flight in opposite to the Captains yacht of the Sovereign for example. Also with all that number of torpedoes and no stellar Cartography thing i thought the intrepid maybe has Industrial replicators on board and can build the labs they need while already on the mission. Maybe for labs they use more frequently they have already building kits on board so maybe Chakotey meant that as he said it was on board from the beginning on it just wasn't assembled. With that an Intrepid Class could also land on an planet build an Speerhead of an outpost and leave without to have beam everything down or move by shuttle. Of Coarse the Class was build with the thread of the borg in mind so it was build with notable fighting abilities too. So it could also be used as scout and reconnaissance vessel. The landing ability adds up to the scout part. Since it could just enter enemies starsystem land on an planets surface and from there gather information the Planets magnetic field and surface anomalies would perfectly cover up the ships presence and no ship which isn't searching extensively for an starship on the surface of the planet will find it. It's secondary deflector and huge sensor array on its nose which points to the sky would also fit for that exact purpose. And if it is found by any change its strong enough to fight its way free and fast enough to make an quick escape. So the mission Profile ends up for it to be an highly adaptable and versatile Starship that could operate with a small crew and could be build efficiently which outfits itself with most things necessary to fulfill its job.
