Starmer 'frustrated' by allegations against Tory MP Mark Menzies
The Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has questioned why it took so long for the Conservative Party to launch an investigation into the MP Mark Menzies.
Mr Menzies is alleged to have used thousands of pounds given by donors to fund medical expenses.
He is also alleged to have made a late-night call to an elderly aide asking for financial help because he had been locked up by "bad people" demanding money for his release, according to The Times.
Mr Menzies denies the claims.
The party's chief whip Simon Hart is said to have been made aware of the claims in January, when the former campaign manager reported what had allegedly happened.

Why does anyone think an ex DPP and criminal barrister would say they have complete confidence in someone if they haven't already checked the evidence or in this case the clear lack of. It's galling that the Tory MP who made the allegations wont repeat them out of Parliament for fear of a defamation charge.

The Tory MP in question wont even say what the allegations are, that he set out in HIS OWN letter to the police, even though doing so would not be defamatory - and he knows it. It's just a desperate attempt to smear the Labour part in order to distract us from the s**t-show that is the current Tory government. As a lawyer Starmer will already have a pretty good idea about the so called "evidence" against Rayner, which is why he has confidence in her.

It seems to me saying he has not checked the evidence is his escape route, he can claim he was badly advised/lied to. In saying that I think the whole story is bogus.
Menzies could get advice from Bone, Pincher and Wragg. Neil Parrish could also offer some useful advice.
Menzies has been a parliamentary aide to three Tory ministers - but resigned the last of these roles in 2014, after a newspaper reported allegations from a Brazilian male escort that he paid him for sex and asked him to buy an illegal drug. At the time, Mr Menzies said a number of the allegations were untrue and he "looked forward to setting the record straight".
