I received StarLink home spring 2022. We live in a rural area and there are no other options besides the two high orbit satellite companies and cellular. Starlink was a total game changer at home. High orbit casted us $165 for 100gb do SL was a no brainer. We are snow birds so we purchased SL RV in fall of 2022. Works great on the road in all of the Arizona desert BLM spots we stayed. The only issue was that we found ourselves hunkered down at night binge watching instead of starting a fire and enjoying the great out doors. I did do some remote office a few hours each morning and was SL was fully functional Zoom calling and sharing large files. For work, totally worth it. For play, too addicting.
Thanks Jason. I'll just take my T-Mobile Internet with me for $50/mo. and call it a day. Obviously not the capability of Starlink, but fits the budget and works pretty well wherever I can get T-Mobile cell tower signal.

We got Starlink a couple of months ago. Thus far it has performed quite well in every situation we have deployed it. But that’s the big if - when we only have an overnight stay we just use a cell-based service or, gasp, campground Wi-Fi if it actually works. Putting the dish on a pole and fiddling with it all is a bit of a PITA so there has to be some motivation.
Thanks Jason for another great update

Just ordered it since in Live in the North West Territories remote area no cell service most spots so now I can get internet in the remoteness of Canada two thumbs up.
Love our starlink kinda like Thousand trails, fulltime families group it helps us with our lifestyle. We started with 450 in cell phone plans and were lucky to get 10 down. I am having a bad day if I get 10 down with Starlink. It’s a game changer for Rvers.
We've had Starlink for almost a year. Love it!!!
I got it a few days ago - I love Roam for the RV. I am in the UK and so it's half price. You can even rent the kit now for £15 a month - which is crazy! but I purchased it for when I move around even if the car if you go away on Holiday it's handy to take your internet with you. The 2 months works in Europe so we are taking it to Spain for the summer. There is a way to remove from Roam and put onto res just using the kit that you have. I am yet to try it but I will let you know if it works
Well, for sure this is Another thing I won't be spending on...TY!
Jason, Not sure you are aware but Starlink is being installed for camper and Ranger use(free) in many of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks. Once they get the bugs worked out to get the signal out better into the campgrounds. While we travel with a TMobile 5g, having the SL available at the parks is a seriously nice perk.
I need to travel more before considering this system. Thanks for the infor

When there is no cell service, our starlink is a life saver, cell based internet is fine if it works for you, and we have that too. But it's like gasoline, if you run out on the side of the road 7$ a gallon seems reasonable to get you to the next stop ✋️
I finally got StarLink back in November... and now there's a fat price increase. Sigh. I'll deal as long as it continues to perform as well as it does. Very impressed so far.

Thank you Jason for explaining about Starlink and the name change to Roam.
We are just getting Starlink access in the Philippines and with the constant disconnects I get with my present company, I may consider this.
When an IBM/AT was $3500 dealer net, plus $700 for a 2400 bps Hayes modem, plus another $3500 dealer net for a laser printer (net) that came up to the price of a good Toyota and that was without any software at all. Nevertheless some folks could buy it all for business and make it all back inside of the first year. Starlink? Gigabit speeds in the boonies and at sea? It is still DIRT CHEAP if you have a business case for it. A little pricey if all you do is stream cat pictures, though.

We were at Gros Ventre CG for the season as Volunteers and there was basically no cell service and the CG and the NP service give us wifi that was no good. 06/2022 we bought Starlink and set it up and it was great. Went from Wy. to SW Florida and are now in SW Florida for 6 months. Have used all sorts of different Data service and they have yet to compare to our Starlink. As we all know not everyone likes it but we have been very happy with its performance from there to here and soon we goback to GTNP for another season of volunteering. Starlink will be there with us.
Good job
I have a $55/mon ATT plan and with Visible (Verizon) we have 2 phones ($30 each/mon) with hotspots. These work well for me at home or on the road and since I don't have to have internet 100% of the time - If at a location doesn't allow internet I consider it an invitation from above to put the shit down and enjoy nature.

Bought the RV package last summer for use at anchor on our boat here in the Puget Sound of the PNW. So many cellular dead zones in the marine regions, making remote work and online classes problematic, even with an external cell antenna and amplifier. @45 seconds you talk about travelling to Canada or Mexico for only two months per TOS. However, the TOS (1:24) clearly state same CONTINENT as registered address (NOT same Country). Canada, US, Mexico and even "Central America" are on the same continent (since there are only seven continents and Central America isn't one of them) - North America . I'm curious if anyone has been turned off while using a US address and in Central America for an extended stay?

I think they priced the Starlink Global in Mexico higher than the US price in order to stop Americans from purchasing the equipment at a lower cost in Mexico and then taking it back to the US or anywhere else in the world and use it there all while paying a lower rate than if they bought here in the States. You can still get Starlink Roam in Mexico and use it in the US/Canada for two months, while still paying the lower Mexican rate of $75 a month, which is a steal, albeit only having 2 months to use it outside of Mexico. Living in Southern California, I wonder if I could just drive down to Baja for a day/weekend to reset the Roam part, since I'd physically/technically be back in Mexico.
OK thanks for the informative video. Now for the situation and question. I have had Starlink on my boat for a year now. Love it allot. Great speed. Coverage has increased to include Bahama and Canada. Additional charge for RV and a price increase. That said I have to say I am a bit dismayed regarding the mobility use at sea. My cruising is near shore and international North America (Bahama and Canada). Just what is Starlink now offering? Do I still have a viable internet solution? And just when will Starlink contact me regarding my next step? I wish I was asking for a friend.😮

As far as I see using the existing Starlink dish on my boat will void the limited warranty. Seems there is a concern regarding damage. My Dishy is mounted inside one of the two domes mounted on the hardtop. The other dome has a KVH antenna for DirecTV. Not much chance of damage on less I fail to call for a low bridge opening on the ICW. My impression is that I am taking the risk of damage but that everything will work underway. 🙏
Was disappointed at the price increase on the SL RV plan. But the ability to stay connected in cell dead zones is the main reason I got SL in the first place...so we shall see where this goes cost wise in the future...

Hi Jason, my wife and I got into RVing in 2021 and we watch your channel regularly, thx for all the information you provide. We are early Starlink residential users and not real happy with the service as the performance has degraded while the price has risen. I used to get 80mb/sec and up but now routinely only run 50 - 60mb/sec and in peak times down to 30 or lower. I have a brother who has it for RV and it has performed well while he's been his trips, relatively speaking, but I have to wonder what the de-prioritized service would actually end up giving us in the new paradigm of service. Paying for another dish up front to get roaming doesn't thrill me either. Guess we will see where this all goes as they are starting to put up the gen2 satellites that have more speed and capability. Thanks again, have a great trip heading north! Pete

1:50 The Mexican pricing seems to be a demographic-based approach. Those that can afford to travel outside Mexico pay a premium. However, regular non-traveling residents get the rate based around the Mexican average income. The Starlink bean-counters are working overtime on pricing structures that work to their advantage. I'm in Australia, and currently, I am in a 5G mobile zone with wireless internet so SL isn't a need. However, once I get my home on wheels finished, Internet anywhere will be a priority (you know, the whole vlog of my journey stuff). I won't have that need anytime soon, so hopefully some sort of stable pricing structure will have been sorted by the time I need it. I've looked at those antenna-based cell-boost systems but the cost seems a little over the top for something that only works if there is minimal cell/mobile coverage. I'll be in environments with zero coverage, barely an AM radio signal.

I've had it on my sail boat for about 6 months. It's been great. Ocean crossing sailors are reporting good coverage at sea underway (probably slower than 10 knots average speeds. (10knots = 11.5 mph = 17km/h). I'm upgrading to Global and taking it to Asia to use (hopefully) while sailing back across the Pacific. I think SpaceX is absolutely right to charge higher rates for cruise ships and perhaps even large crewed vessels, (Hopefully they know those crews are not paid very well, so companies probably won't want to pay more for Starlink than the total below deck crew's combined salaries.) And the world cruising sailors I know may have started out with some money, they're now live aboards on limited incomes. So that $5k/month is out of our reach. (Starlink's real competition are cruise ships and those $2 million+ yachts with the large white bubbles containing satellite TV dishes. Those guys would probably switch from $2k- $7k/month plans to a $5k/month Starlink and be very very happy.) Tip: The standard Dishy stowed will easily fit in the largest checked luggage. What I did for extra protection was cut some lightweight pine plywood to protect the dish. At the end where the stalk sticks up I made a U-bracket that tapers down each side about 6" (15 cm), the end piece tapers up just above the stalk. I duct taped the dishy to the plywood so the stalk doesn't touch the end piece. Seems pretty good. (I just hot glued the parts that stick up because I'd left my epoxy on board the boat. Otherwise I'd have gusseted the outside joints.) I'll pack in my clothing around it as padding. Someone ask me here after the second week in April and I'll tell you how well it traveled. All the Starlink cases on offer are overpriced and ridiculously too large. It's a very sturdy build that doesn't need much protection.

Agree, long as one doesn't frequent a lot of dead zones, cellular is the way to go and is really hard to beat.
Does StarLink work when you are in a wooded campsite? It seems like a no brainer to cover the no cell dead spots that are common in National and State Parks. However, looking at the website it shows that any tree limbs above and at an angle would not work. If that is the case, I can't understand how it would be so popular with RV users. Almost all campsites have some canopy even it it is not right above. If you need a pole to "rise above the trees" then it seems it would just be too big of a pain in the neck to use. In the RV Miles videos, I only see the "Dishy" on the ground which is why I ask.
@RVMiles

If there's a decent sized opening in the trees, it works with maybe a couple drop-outs per hour for a minute or so. I'll put it on the roof if needed, but in heavy tree coverage it doesn't work at all.

How do we get grandfathered?
Hi, Have a question I am hoping you can help with... we got a "second" residential, right before RV came out. We converted it to an RV plan and pay $110. We have never switched it back to residential, but when in manage, it says Best effort residential. I also do not see the options for Regional Roam or Global Roam, in my account. When I hit manage, I just see the Best Effort. Also we are still paying $110. I would like to change to Regional Roaming to ensure I am getting what I need, but don't see how and no longer see the option to send a "message" to Starlink for assistance. Also, on more thing, we can pause and unpause service... so that makes me feel like I am on RV still, but not really sure. All that said, I am in a national forest, nowhere near my service address and I am on Starlink... albeit, it drops and restarts fairly often. Thanks in advance.
We live out in the middle of nowhere, no cell etc. and had satellite (tried two different companies) and had terrible signal/service. We were finally able to get SL for home for our area and have had it for about a year now and it's been amazing. Have used the roam for the additional $25 when camping and literally have had zero issues so far. We were a little bummed about the recent price increase; and now we will need to figure out what the newest changes are going to cost us as we are going full time in December. Thanks for a great video with lots to think about!! We are glad to have found your channel!
If I active global plan still it will work in the same location for two months
I plan to buy Starlink in England and drive to West Africa, spend a few months and see how it works. I guess I am beta testing Starlink for Elon in the deserts and bush of Africa.
The only reason they are increasing prices for traveling people is because that's the only revenue they are getting. Who's going to pay so much more then what's already available

I have an acquaintance seeking to sell their Starlink. I’m not all that familiar. Are dishes specific to the plan? IE, Roam vs Residential. My main interest is to travel with connectivity remotely. Thanks for any guidance.
Hello thanks for the infor. I was a early adopter to Residential w/portability for taking on camping trips in my RV. I live in a very rural area but I did have a decent wireless broadband provider, but portability brought me to use Starlink instead. Now they dropped Portability without grandfathering existing customers (unlike cellphone companies do), dropped the speed and raised the price. During a 10" snowstorm yesterday with no internet I go out and start scraping off the dish, first thing through my mind- So why did I purchase all this over priced crap? Fortunately my electric coop just started hanging fiber lines on our poles and announced a partnership with a rural internet provider for multi-gigabit service for 1/3 the cost of Starlink. I signed up on the waiting list, then will pause Starlink for if and when I travel with it. *My take on Starlink, good at first, but even the 2nd richest man in the world is finding it expensive launching 50 satellites each week*
So the pricing on Starlink is similar to cell phone pricing in the early days. No idea what you will end up paying until the bill arrives. I waited a year on a list to get mine in January of 21. And it was great because I could mount it at home for 6 months and then I could travel with it for 6 months. Now can I have it changed and have the roam package but wait it will be deprioritized when I’m at home. Or do I have to purchase a second roan system and go back and forth in turning them on and off. And is that only going to work until Elon Musk changes his mind again? For now I haven’t shut it off but next month I’ll be moving it back to my house and since my job has changed, I’m only home 4 days a month, I’ll get it changed back to the permanent address and then turn it off. And when I retire again I’ll be looking at what systems are available for mobile service.
@jed2055
Жыл бұрын
That could be tricky Paul. The units need to be updated and will do so even when paused or so I've read. Turning it off as in cancelling payments and pulling the power plug rather than pause the plan, could brick your unit as it will not receive updates and cannot reconnect with the system down the track. Do check with SL support and see if that is correct though as EM is making changes all the time.
I wish they would start grandfathering in certain policies. I’m a bit afraid to sign up bc it keeps changing. If you sign up on a cellular contract you get to stay on at the price- it locks you in. He is not promoted security nor stability with these constant changes- and I’m not just talking about starlink- but it’s kinda that way with twitter too. How would it feel to be a spacex astronaut? Will he change my job description while I’m up in space?😮

They are self-depricating satellites. They burn up into the atmosphere after 5 years. Those 20 were knocked off course by solar flares during the launch, I believe - but there are over 3000 up there.
It’s to pricey!! Internet not that important!!
Who wants to connect up to something that keeps changing their prices and raising them higher and higher. Not for me not ever.
150.00 or 200.00 and you will still be throttled 😂.
I call starlink. Starjunk....lol. making a mess in our atmosphere so more and more RVers and Van lifters can watch tv no matter where they are. Good grief!!!😂😂
Sounds like their rules and pricing structure are as scitzo as Elon is.
Sure glad I didn't sign up for this
Once again, Americans are subsidizing the price other countries pay for an American based product. SMH.
😆🤣😂 that's gona be a no
At $150 a month, that's over priced. Factor in de-prioritized data rates and it's REALLY over priced.
I am increasingly not interested in things that Elon Musk has created. He seems to make up the rules and terms as he goes and vastly over-states capabilities. This generations' Con Man...

After finding Nomad Internet, Starlink can keep hanging from the moon! I’ll not have anything to do with Elon’s “rip-off” company.

It works great most of the time - trees are a big limiting factor. Sometimes deprioritization gets you useless speeds, but usually in the evening in the East. Customer service sucks. The cable and proprietary connectors they use suck. But it's the best internet option out there by far for being rural. It's the only thing that works in most places we go.
You CAN NOT trust Musker.
Overprices and slow with garbage customer service, but at least you're giving your money to a billionaire
Musk is killing this product with these stupid plans.

@@RVMiles But it doesn't. You want people to watch because they think that if they have a RV they can't have Starlink. That isn't the case. Yes, the programs changed, but "STARLINK RV DOEN'T END."

@@dennisdickson2892 I think the “new plans” text makes that pretty clear. Also the title.
Get out. Get out now before people laugh at you for being an Elon fanboi. Starlink was a joke by Elon. He's played everyone. Get out before you are fighting for Elon. It's. Not. Worth. It.
