Great update, Jason. I have the residential/portability plan now and plan to keep it for the next month or so. We're vacationing in OR, MT and WY this summer and I'll be working a few days in each location, and I don't want to risk anything. We're retiring next year, though, so Internet connectivity won't be as important. Great idea about having a backup ethernet cable. Thank you, sir!

Thanks for all this information. We did an update in Jan or Feb and found a 'Sleep Mode' setting. Was really difficult to cancel thay function. We now have a bluetooth electric outlet ($20 home depot) to remotely turn on/off. Also, pausing service was easy, activation was more time consuming searching how to cancel pause! Glad to know it worked great in Baja.

I am a DIY tech I initially purchased the RV basic or standard hardware system before going on a cross-country trip. I read lots about Starlink and tried it around town for about 3 months. Just before leaving on our trip I learned about the new High-Performance system and really liked the idea of being online while driving and on the move. I installed it and tried it and really liked it, and was torn to keep both systems in case I ended up under trees where I could not connect. We left on May 15th and we had excellent Internet from LA to Arizona which was amazing! I did end up at an RV spot in Sedona where I was under trees and it internet was very spotty and marginal. I wished I brought my standard portable dish that I could set out away from our RV... Better luck next time, afterall, if you live and work on the road, it all comes down to convenience, time saved, and saftey! right? Thank you for your update, it was informative.

Awesome update - I've been on the fence about SL. It's making more sense for my RV travels.

Starlink has recently offered services here in the Philippines. With so many islands, 7000+, getting reliable internet is a major issue here.

Excellent video and explanation. I think you did a better job than Starlink could have done. For me it’s still to expensive & too many changes to often. As you stated it’s obvious they’re still trying to figure things out. I’m not interested in being a beta tester for Starlink so I’ll wait til the dust settles on this one.

I feel especially screwed. I purchased the $2500 dish specifically for "in motion use". Now I've got to pay $2 per GB on top of the plan to use it while driving? We have a Pepwave router with dual 5g and Starlink, and I drive while my friends do work online in my 9 seat van.

Thanks for the update. We used Starlink last summer and were very happy campers. At the end of the summer we switched to the RV package which allowed us to pause the service. Going to be interesting to see how changes will impact our travels this summer. Don't like the price increase, but Starlink is hard to beat!

We’ve been Boondocking for a year now with Starlink. We are typically out of cell range. The whole priority thing is a non-issue. We get faster speeds without priority than we do back at home with priority. It’s a population density or capacity issue. Thanks for the video.

Same here. Speeds are faster out camping because there are fewer people on the system. Back at home, speeds are slower.

I just wanted to know if you only camp in weekends or summer camp how does it work for residential plan and then for while on the road or sometime camper? If you need to pay a lot extra. I heard no complaints of anybody using it that I know of. Great job Jason with this video. Thank you so much!

Great video, well done. We have the same plan as you all and agree with the performance. We would not be able to live our lifestyle without it. It was so painful when we started.

Great update! To your point, a backup cable is smart. I had a squirrel chew my cable during a presentation. Thankfully I had a spare. Have you used Starlink in Alaska?

Thanks for keeping us informed on the frequent changes, confusing options and seemingly at-will price hikes. This company and its marketing managers are either the poorest planners to ever role out a product OR the highest order of money grubbing evil geniuses. Drug dealers could use Starlink as a market study. It’s like crack for Internet addicts.

There seems to be market "adaptation" all the way, but I agree they need to think through the changes and not let Elon Musk's mood swings control every aspect. In Europe, we have mostly decent broadband at a price mirroring the competition, plus we have government-sponsoring rural fiber and 4G or 5G has good coverage. Therefore Starlink is low priced compared to the U.S. It is really hard for SpaceX to give customers in the U.S. the bandwidths of the future. If they get the new big Starlink sats up with Starship, they still will get way more customers and then they will be stuck with 100Mbit or so for a long time.

I see fiber optic cables being installed in the most rural environments you can imagine in the USA and my home state of Wisconsin. I have yet to see any speed or connectivity benefit from this given our country road had it installed 8 years ago to the sub stations only. No direct connections to residences. Individual homes still use the copper phone lines installed 35 years ago by the phone company . There is no other internet choice besides satellite from Hughes Net or Cell Towers which are 5 miles away. Perhaps they are just keeping up with demand as the market size has increased. Funny story: They ran fiber optic cable down one side of our road 8 years ago. The following year another contractor was running fiber optic down the other side. He had no idea someone else had run cable on the other side the year before. Makes you wonder. Especially since I’m 3 miles outside of a town of 2800 people and 8 miles to the next town the other direction. Typical connection speed for me working from home is 5 upload 40 download during week. Starting Fridays or durning holidays it drops due to all the vacation homes firing up their Netflix.

I don't know I am still torn between Starlink and Nomad Internet😁. I find it amazing that the Nomad site is still up and looks to still be taking orders. Regardless, another great video and amazing information. I have been using Starlink since February and have had zero issues.

I have Starlink RV and love it, but I'm telling you Starlink is going to keep screwing around with their plans and is going to get SMACKED with a class action lawsuit if they don't stop it. Especially with having people buy $2500 dishes with the possibility of using it mobile etc or even just the regular RV plans buying equipment and then afterwards charging more and lowering the service contract after you've already bought the equipment. They really better be careful and stop this crap.

I've had Starlink since near the end of Beta and I've only had a few outages and they were over 2 years ago, have not had one in a long time. I have the old round dish but my speeds are normally pretty good and I have some obstruction from trees, not uncommon here in Washington. Someday we plan to take out the 4 trees that are a problem, not just for Starlink but our front yard as well, but not sure when that will happen. Right now my speed is 89/11

Jason, great explanation of all the options. Kinda like bait and switch. I bought the high performance dish because we are on the move a lot, and in area’s with no cell coverage. So far it’s worked great. Now they, decide to charge for in-motion to the folks that paid the exorbitant price for the high performance dish! I guess if I want to pay an additional $100/ mo, a 66% price increase I could still have in-motion. Not going to do it, Starlink has already scammed me out of enough money.

We received an email just a couple days ago that our residential plan WITH portability is grandfathered indefinitely. We also received another email stating that we would not be deprioritized if/when over 1 TB of data is used.

Awesome and thorough?! Glad I didn’t upgrade automatically to the $2000 upgrade. Oh I just realized you didn’t mention that you can pause your RV service one month at a time.

Crazy challenging for me to make a decision. I live semi-rurally in NW Montana, i.e. there is fiber optic on my road but via CenturyLink. I parted company with CL about 15 years ago and use MiFi hot spots and now a Cradlepoint Cellular router. Verizon is my provider. I have a motorhome as well but now travelling only in the Pacific Northwest. I am a self employed custom software developer so I do require Zoom capable internet. So far my Verizon MIFI/Cradlepoint/Phone hotspot devices are more than adequate. But, I keep looking at Starlink Mobile whatever ... even though semi-retired, I hope to stay active in IT: personal interest and keeping my brain active! Bottomline, thank you for the info - very helpful to me!

When you say "uses significantly more power" it would be very helpful if you could provide specifics. For instance if we're talking about a difference of 60 watts per hour, which is standard for the standard antenna, versus 600 watts for the upgraded model then that would be significant.

The antenna is double the size and it uses about double the power.. It's hard to give exact numbers, because starlink only publishes the max power, which is a lot more than normal.

Thanks. Cannot see that we will ever use Starlink. Just do not need access to the internet that badly to pay the prices they want & keep changing. BUT, I can see why you and others would LOVE the service.

They have filed with the FCC to test smaller dish models. No specific timeline yet. One of the line drawings was an antenna about the size of a sheet of paper.

Thank man! Been up to my eyeballs in spreadsheets trying to figure out a viable and reliable option for interenet while working remote full time. Gonna end up with starlink and mobile hotspot this go around. I mean worst case is i go to KOA and pray they got speed.

Wow. I guess I got lucky. I ordered the standard one and got it in a week. It's expensive but still cheaper than the crappy satellite joke service I had. I could only get about 30 Mbps with Viasat, but it's now 866 Mbps with Starlink. I'm happy so far.

Great video. Wow the costs…. One question, I’ve seen on offer up where there are what I’ll call a reseller or someone who got it as a gift. Have you heard where they (starlink) will control, shut off, your equipment if you didn’t by directly from them? Or are you aware of maybe. Counterfeit equipment, Chinese have done on apple products! Many tks. Any input. We plan on using it for our stationary rv in northern colorado for a couple months per year.

way too expensive for what it does, there have to be better options, heck I am in the Philippines, it is 6 dollars for 40 gigs, and can be used in the states . Starlink here is 150 to 200 dollars and it does not work when it rains and solar flares which is almost every day, some say no worries, but I sent mine back and support for Starlink is horrible absolutely horrible sorry to tell it like it is but not worth it

I’d say the prices are getting a little ridiculous. We will be full time RVrs within the year and plan on boondocking most of the time. Might Be rethinking our options

Trust me I agree. I preordered back in Feb 2021 the first week it was able to preorder. I waited 1.5 years before getting my dish and they actually increased the price from 500 to 600 before I even got mine, they charged me 550 since I preordered already. 8 months later they increased my rate from $100 to $120.. bullshit. I assume they will keep bumping the price over the years and I'll end up switching to Verizon 5g when it's available in my area. $120+ a month for Internet is ridiculous

Once Starlink offers a complete 12v DC mobile setup, I’ll buy in. Most computer drives and routers are internally converted to less than 12v DC anyway so it’s just stupid that RV’ers must run a generator, inverter system, or have shore power to use the current system.

I love this video it explained all of the questions that I had in my head except for one. If I get the standard service and it's 90 or $120 a month how long it's that price good for?

If an order the mobile or roam plan do you know if I can immediately pause the service without loosing a month service cost? Wanted to order now and start it in Dec. I live in Canada and I’m not aware of any reseller

It’s astonishing we don’t have consistent, strong, cheap internet everywhere on the globe by now. I would disbelieve the argument the technology isn’t here yet to do that.

I would just get the basic plan and basic dish and try it out. It will probably be enough for you, but you'll want a back up cell plan for when there are trees. You can always upgrade the plan if you think you need premium data. But most people don't need it.

Starlink is basically the system for those in rural permanent areas and for those people like rv youtubers or others like them. For most people not so much as long as those cost stay the same. Its basically a niche service at this point. Great well done informative video.

Unfortunately, there are still plenty of areas where the best available internet is really crappy DSL, even in non-rural areas, thanks to telecom and cable monopolies. Starlink is better than that.

You can, it won't have the same priority data access as residential, but it will work.

Question? What if you have the old standard and would like to use it on occasionall camping trips. (We did this last year and would just switch to portability in the month we were gone and then switch back). Do I have to switch to mobile? And can I switch back to my grandfathered plan?

You have to either switch to mobile, or change your address to a place near where you are camping for the time you will be there. But it's not guaranteed you will be able to switch back. If you turned portability off already, you can not turn it back on.

They're crazy with those prices.

Great video and superb explanation. Did your IP change when using Starlink Roam in Mexico? When you browsed Google or used a streaming site, were you getting US content, or did it change to MX content? I ask as I need a US IP address to connect to work, so I'm wondering if this might be an option when traveling across countries. I know for mobile hotspots your traffic gets tunneled to your home country, show a US IP address in this case. Thanks!

I was glad to have the service for my travels out west as I stayed in many places with no cell service that I wouldnt have otherwise. I jumped ship though when they raised the price to $150. It was too much, especially since I started at $99/month and a round dish. I don't need internet access that badly.

Weather doesn't really affect it.

What about upload speeds? Is the speed greater than 5mbps with the more expensive plan? We're full-time in our 40' class A and have a weekly broadcast. It's hard to do with less than 10mbps. Thus, we currently rely on our 5G T-Mobile device and only use Starlink for download. The upload is really bad...

It's faster, but your issue with Starlink for livestreams or other real-time communication isn't as much the upload speed as it is jitter and latency. Those things are challenging for satellite internet. We have found we can do livestreams just fine if we have a very clear view of the sky, but not without drops otherwise.

WINEGUARD has now become a retailer for starlink and you can go through them for customer service needs...... i was locked out of my account for 4 months with no response from starlink..... wineguard was able to get into my account and reset it .....

There's no "dial up"equivalent plan and no 12 volt dishes.

Nice video! Today is May 14 and the changes you mentioned are still not on the website. I went on the site and tried to purchase the high performance dish with the standard mobility $150 a month plan for my trailer. I don't need in motion but I want the better performance antenna. It appears that is not possible, I can't get the antenna without paying $250 per month. Is there any way around this? I haven't found ANYONE posting about this new limitation unless I'm missing something...

I'm also interested in the answer to this one. I have not been able to find any information out there that confirms you can use the regular high performance equipment (the version on a post) with the standard $150/month plan. It's only possible to purchase the flat high performance dish (roof-mount) with the Roam option, and then only for the in-motion $250/month plan. I'd be curious where RV Miles got their information about this. He did mention the new plans are not available on the website yet, so it could just be a matter of time before this particular configuration of options becomes available. Not currently available, as of May 25th, 2023.

Its probably more complicated because Starlink has chosen to not have an actual ability to ask them a simple question like this. I guess I'll find out soon because I bought a High Performance yesterday for my partial view, treed property. I'm mainly going to use it for my Airstream on a stop and start basis so if I'm "stuck" with the $250 price I can live with it for a month... I guess!

Informative video! Does anybody know the actual power usage of the system (in watts)? I'm going to order the Mobile version to use this summer while we travel and need to add an inverter to our 5th wheel so that we can use the internet if/when boondocking for a night or 2. I'd like to size the inverter so that it is just enough for Starlink, as we don't have solar on the RV as of yet. Thanks!

Question - I bought a Dishy last summer and have not yet activated it or installed. I just received an upgrade discount offer from Starlink to get the high performance for $600 off. Do you know if it would work to upgrade using this offer AND also keep the first unit going on another plan (sell it to someone)? Thanks!

You could, and you can transfer the old dish to someone else. It's important to note that you do have to get the mobile premium plan for that offer, so the plan is pricier, too.

Does the RV plan run the 1st of month to 30/31st? Or does it use the day you activate, for example the 18th through the 18th of next month?

Your billing cycle starts 14 days after your Starlink kit is shipped. It doesn't matter when you start using it or when you activate it. You get billed 14 days after the kit ships, and then on that date each month.
