Starlink Roof Mount Full Install and Speed Test
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This is a how to on installing the Starlink Roof Mount along with a speed test to compare. I figured out the hard way how to pull wire for my Starlink install - don't make the mistake I did. It didn't help that I was either on the roof or in the attic in 95 degree heart. NOT FUN! Speed test at the end. Thanks for the video and showing the honest mistakes. I can't complete a project without mistakes it is just part of the process.

I came to see a Starlink installation. But I am wowed by the way you stand on that roof with no fear. I love your courage

You were very thorough on sealing the roof. I found that you have to run the cable from the router to the satellite which doesn't have the large elbow like you discovered. I did the same thing you did. Mine was a masonry install. -Marc

Yes, definately not fun doing the cable run twice. If it was sent to me without the dish end of the cable I would've seen what I needed to do right from the start. Being that the dish end of the cable was plugged into the dish, it looked hard wired so that is what I assumed.

That is interesting, I looked up the flashing mount install guide and it does say to do it the way he did... weird. I bought an arm mount and cable routing kit, which the install for the cable routing very clearly says route cable from inside to outside (opposite for high performance SL). Cable routing kit also comes with a handy plastic piece that covers / protects the cable connector while you have it disconnected, and is long for poking / pulling through the wall

Did your install go well?
@8:30 It's super convenient to put your ladder at an interior corner to go up on a roof. Then you're not having to climb around it to get on or off. You just step to the side.

Oh yeah nice idea! I have never even thought about that. Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching.
Any update on performance? It looks like I'm north of you in Mt Vernon area, gonna have to do a similar install to get above the timber. Wondering if it's worth the trouble to do a 'permanent' mount or something a little more redneck...

It does just fine for streaming and surfing. It has slowed down a bit but still far better than my other alternative.
Wondering about using Starlink so criminals can't cut the wireless access to the cameras and any alarms. I am interested in using my Starlink that I usually use to work in my camper for my new house. I realize that the weak link in the system with a criminal would be to find the Starlink cable outside and cut it turning off everything. Any thoughts on bringing the cable through your roof and down into the house instead of the outside and then back in? I appreciate your wife's bravery on the roof! She's a trooper!

You can run from the roof, into the attic and down an interior wall. I ran mine the way I did because that was easiest.
When you were installing the flashing mount, you said "it said not to cut the bottom shingle"...Is there an instruction manual from Starlink that said to cut the upper shingle? Do you know where we can find a copy of the installation manual??
@schmitty750

Yes there is a manual. You can get the PDF on the starlink website. There is a manual under each product.
Yea just went through this myself - and I too am wondering who decided to make the cord have that GIANT elbow piece on either end knowing you needed to run it through tight spaces.

Yeah it's crazy. Being that the other end was already plugged into the satellite receiver, I assumed it was hard wired. I never even tried to pull it out until I had already drilled some big holes! It's funny now but when I was about to die of a heat stroke it wasn't very funny. I was pissed when I figured out that the end on the reciever pulls out and is small around.
whr did u buy the pedestal?

From the Starlink website.
Oh, and I guess it don't matter what direction the flat part of the dish faces? As long as the master is near vertical? I guess I'm use to having to aim it directly like a "Dish network"

I believe it turns on its own. I've noticed randomly it will be pointing in a slightly different direction. Just says clear view of the northern sky and does the rest.
pull the plug out of the satelite , it is smaller
I'll be installing a rectangular dishy up soon Schmitty so watching your vid with interest. With the big right-angled plug on the router end you then have to push the smaller dish end up from underneath. Who can do that up inside an interior wall then into the roof space then through a small hole in the roof? Answer: No one. It's arse about. That hug right-angled plug at the router has to go and when you consider these guys put rockets into space but can't logically think through a typical roof/brick wall/ installation properly, it's scary.

Yeah Jed! If the wire would have been unplugged from the dish in the package I would have seen that one end has a right angle and one end is straight. Then I wouldn't have had to run the wire twice lol! I just assumed that the wire plugged into the dish was hard wired and no connector up inside of it. Live and learn. Sucks doing it twice when it's 95 degrees out and 130 degrees in the attic. Thank you so much for watching and I'm glad my mistakes can help you! I thought about editing that part out so I didn't look stupid but I figured it might help some people. Please subscribe too, I have a lot of videos you might find interesting and some you might find boring too 🤣

@@schmitty750 Your "mistake" was extremely understandable. The first gen kit was hard wired at Dishy's end. Btw, here in Oz we get stinking hot days and l-o-n-g summers. Feels like it's getting worse in the sub tropical part of Queensland where I live in : - )
Is that the Pivot Mount? Thanks

You can unplug the cable on the rectangle dish end, that plug is not so big.

What are speeds like now?
@schmitty750
Жыл бұрын
Still varies greatly throughout the day. Off peak hours are very fast 40 to 120 down and 5 to 20 up. I never have a problem streaming. Peak hours, especially a holiday when everyone is home, slow quite a bit on upload speeds but I can still stream with no problems. I only stream HD not UHD and usually 2 devices at the same time would be about the max. Sometimes uploading a KZread video will take a while but better than our local DSL that runs about .5 up.

@@schmitty750 I know this was a while ago you posted, I had similar DSL around 5 down / .5 up which got very slow during pandemic for working at home. Sometimes lower than 1 Mbit down. I wish I had starlink then, but now I have it in Canada and my speeds are almost 300 Mbit down / 30 up , which varies through the day down to about 150/ 10. Are you getting faster speeds these days?
