Starlink Install, Speed Test, and Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Installing SpaceX’s Starlink with the volcano roof mount. Running speed tests and comparing Starlink to Telus Smart Hub. Rural internet solution!
𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐩: "a downward hanging loop in a line that runs to a building"
A very important step that was missed and pointed out in the comments is using a drip loop. I should have ran the line below the wall penetration, then back up before entering the wall. This will allow any water that might travel down the line to drip to the ground and not direct it towards the wall. See 7:34 for an example of a drip loop.

    They're cluttering the sky with satellites in orbits almost designed to lead to a Kessler syndrome situation. Additionally the planned quantity and distribution of satellites will make ground based astronomy substantially harder. I'm already sick of seeing the damned things in the sky - I live in the middle of nowhere so that I don't have crap like that around me all the time.

  • @augustday9483

    @augustday9483

    @@jasonpatterson8091 Starlink satellites are on a lower orbit than geo-synchronous and should de-orbit a lot faster (in decades rather than centuries), making the risk of Kessler Syndome very low. Regarding the light-pollution and impact on astronomy... it's very unfortunate, but at the end of the day we simply need to move on from ground-based astronomy anyways. Clouds, heat-distortion, light pollution from cities; all these things already make ground-based astronomy kinda suck. The future is in orbital telescopes 100%.

    Just word of advice even though it’s too late, it is best to install these on the roof over the overhang. That way if it leaks, it doesn’t leak INTO your house. You also won’t need to tack the wire down on the shingles, creating more leak spots. You also should have made a drip loop on your wire right where it enters the house. Otherwise, water WILL work its way into that hole. You cannot rely solely on silicone to protect your home… I’ve spent many years installing stuff on roofs, eves, and running wire into homes. A lot of stuff in this video are just problems that WILL cost you thousands in repairs later….

    Nice! I'm really excited for starlink. One thing to note about your roof mount, you'll want to leave the bottom edge unsealed. That way if water gets under the mount there's a place for it to flow out. For solar footers (that only have one 3.5" lag bolt) we put roof sealant in the hole and two large arches on the flashing. That way if water gets behind it it'll direct it away from the penetration and it would flow back out to the roof.

    Awesome install Pat. Man you do live on the prairie! What a beautiful view of the Rockies. I'm sending this video to my buddy in Ontario who put his deposit down on Starlink and is waiting for his setup which is supposed to be sometime in July. Yes, you do need a metal roof. That is an easy DIY job on a straight gable roof like you have. You could do it yourself and save thousands. I've done 3 of them myself, with rigid insulation board under the metal panels and was very happy with the end result. The end of your video was hilarious. Those shingles stand no chance.

    Just the video I was needing, with some great tips and a Canadian perspective! Considering Starlink for my cottage, so I can work from there this summer. [Why be stuck at home, when you can be stuck on the lake!] I did note a couple of things in your install which I would recommend. First, when you caulked the base of the mount, you ran it around all 4 sides. I would recommend leaving the bottom edge open, so that if any moisture did work it's way in, it is free to drain out [even with your relatively low-pitch roof]. Secondly, I would suggest including a drip loop at the bottom of your exterior run just before entering the house, this way if any water does happen to travel along the cable, it won't try to work its way in through any imperfections in the caulking.

    @@trevorb3521 I did not, though I likely would have, but I had some line of sight issues, which could have been a problem a times. Also had some changes at work that required me to be in the city more than I had originally planned. At this point I am somewhat thankful I wasn't able to, as the recent announcements about data caps are making it far less attractive option. (also not a huge fan of the new generation hardware. The geography of my install would have necessitated an Ethernet connection, and they seemed to have removed that in the newer hardware)

    in case people are wondering -- a drip loop is a slack bit of cable that sits lower than the rest. The whole purpose is to let water pile up at the bottom and drip off. If your cables were tight, water from outside could travel down the wire and get straight into an outlet or onto your electronic device

    Pull some of that cable back outside and create a drip loop - the way you have done it (even with silicone) gives water a straight path to flow into your house (albeit slowly) and start causing problems, because of the surface tension holding the water to the cable. A drip loop sits below the ingress hole and helps the water drip and gravity stops it getting back up and in.

    Pros DIY great job buddy! I’ve put about a dozen of these in so far. Found the same issue as you with the optional roof mount. Wrapping it in 3M temflex tape solved it good enough for me. If you notice in the optional wall part They have a drip loop. If you silicone it good there’s no worries for now. But a drip loop will save your wall penetration point. Even if your silicone fails over the years. Basically just run your cable down past the hole and loop it upwards to the hole. Let’s the water drip off the bend. Cheers bud

    One of the better install videos I've watched. The service loop at the antenna is something a lot of people don't do but should. That said, putting sealant completely around the base of the roof mount will trap water under it. There is no open space for it to escape. Also, where the cable enters the wall you should have a drip loop there. Extending the cable below the entry point and then looping back up. This helps prevent water running down the cable from following the cable directly inside. The water will go to the lowest point of the cable and drip off.

  • @PROSDIY

    Hey, as someone that had a house with a metal roof in New Mexico, make sure you get a good installer. If not done correctly, a metal roof can be far worse than a shingle roof if it is damaged via winds. And upgrade to the thicker stuff if given a chance. I can’t remember the details of the roof we replaced our old metal roof with but the thicker stuff made a world of difference.
