HI GUYS!! just wanna say any non-constructive, negative criticism in my comments will be deleted, you can go hate somewhere else!! Xx
oh i have a new found appreciation for the bochum production now
In literally every other version of the show, they at least look like trains. And now, you can't tell if they're robots or not.
I CANT EVEN DESCRIBE HOW MUCH I LOVE PURPLE PEARL

Trying something new and impressive and it works.
EDIT: I've had more thoughts. My origjnal comment is below this. I feel I was stuck in the idea the show is about a classic/traditional toy train set. And it's wrong to judge this version of the show on those terms because they are clearly going for something completely different conceptually. What I said about it feeling like a cartoon to sell toys... Starlight Express. The name itself is very futuristic. Sci-fi space trains anyone? If that's what they are going for this design works. I keep thinking about Transformers and even things like Steven Universe. With that in mind, as an interpretation of the original musical, I think I get this. Imagine for a moment a cartoon in a retro-futuristic universe with space trains that have AI personalities. These humanoid figures are the self-expressed image of each trains AI. And this kid happens to be playing with action figure toys of them. This perspective really helps me understand why these costumes aren't alluding to classic train aestheitcs and motifs. I guess one can argue there is no reason a toy train set has to be based on real world trains? /original thoughts/ This version of Electra is very Starscream in Transformers Prime. Which I love. How I feel about the costumes in general. In their own right they are pretty fun and aesthetically pleasing. But they don't read as train-like to me. What I get from them are futuristic Hot Wheels fantasy cars. They feel like toys, but not classic toy trains. Perhaps this is deliberate and intended. They have the vibe of 80s Saturday morning tv cartoon characters designed to sell toys: Transformers, Mobile Suit Gundam, Voltron or even Power Rangers. It's an idea that works conceptually I'll admit. I also feel it reminds me of a lot of the aesthetics of contemporary toys right now. Especially the colours palattes. But because they have the incredible costumes of John Napier to be compared to, they really don't live up to the expectations and bar set by his vision. Also since these new costumes are missing the more overt motifs that read as "trains" (and the type of train/carriage each character represented) it just detracts from the show's entire concept. And it is bloody hard enough to make a human representation of a train work as it did with Napier's designs. I feel there are some designs here that are gorgeous and I would love to have action figures/dolls of some of them. But they just don't work anywhere near as well for the show as the originals.

I feel your point about futuristic trains is a valid one! though even looking at a bullet train, or any high speed train, offers more inspiration for costumes that could have more knods to trains than these - whilst still being subtle.
Shame on everyone posting negative comments. This is the first PREVIEW from a completely revamped version being performed by actors who for many this is their first professional debut. Give them time to grow into the roles! They are the ones who will be reading these comments wanting to see what people think. If you hate the changes or material, fine, but go after Andrew Lloyd Webber for that. As for singing and acting choices, there is time now for things to be refined and rehearsed even more, and despite some hiccups the cast have brought so much energy as you can clearly see here. If you care about the show's longevity then show some encouragement and support!

@Simulacra719 yes!!! BOMBAY was the beginning of ALW virtue signaling and he lost his shirt and trousers on it!! The standing seats in the Apollo were 5 pounds and EVERY dollar showed up on stage. Different times my friend.

No one is hating the actors! I‘m from germany and know the Bochum Production. I am mad at ALW for this design decisions! Why cant they just stop making changes and go back to the original from 1984. The original production wasnt event that clischee and sexist, line the version touring in the Early 2000 and in Bochum from 2013-2018.

@@corvoauditore3564 I'd be happy with a clean complete recording of 1984 London and 1987 Broadway than any new production for the rest of etertinity.

@@parisking2445 because they want to make money and get paid for working in theatre! I hate to break it to you but actors do loads of work they hate because it pays the bills! Starting with most of my acting friends. You go where the work is…
