    There are several who have their names on their costumes - even Rusty! It reminds me of those political cartoonists who have to write the name of the politicians on the characters, mainly because they can’t draw the people to a good enough likeness. Same here, really.

    @@robwarner9371there are SOME positive elements with some of these costumes, but not enough to make up for the negative ones!!! It would appear that the characters need their printed on them because there really isn't much about the majority of them that speak for themselves in terms of helping audience members (without literally spelling it out) identify either the character or the piece of railroad equipment they represent! 🤦 It's kinda like the equivalent of staging CATS (which I kinda can't stand) with the cast dressed in various types of professional sports style jerseys adorned with the character's names on the back, but more moronic! You got Mistoffoles looking like Michael Jordan in a red and black basket getup with the #23, Macavity like Shady Tom Brady in Patriots-esque NFL attire, Skimbleshanks rocking a Wayne Gretzky LA Kings themed Hockey sweater, etc.. like WTF are kids that wanna see characters that look like felines gonna think? I almost thought that the first video I saw was some kinda prank or gag teaser

    I am from Germany, Bochum, and I am shocked. What's that? Starlight Express? No. Definitly not. Andrew L. Webber killed the Starlight Express in a theatre...live and in front of everybody. Shame on you, Mr. Webber! I'm seriously so incredibly sorry that after so many years of waiting for a comeback, you're seeing such an absolutely bad and embarrassing production in London. England doesn't deserve that. Germany feels for you. 🥀🪦🔚 🎼🚂🎶

    You’re right my friend; I went to see it today, it was effing terrible. ALW opted for wokery rather than quality. I’m so disappointed ALW as he’s very critical for choosing his singers as they’re representing his work. I can tell you the new Rusty and Pearl’s voices do not have range and lacking in power. Bochum version is miles better.

All I can say is that seeing the original as a five year old who loved trains back in 86, I wished I could have one of the steam or diesel helmets and I was surrounded by train people! If my parents brought me to this after telling me it was a show about trains, I would have prolly thought I was being punished for something i did wrong or that they had just told me a big lie to tease me or pull my leg and really brought me to the Jetsons Roller Derby Extravaganza (I liked the Flintstones but really didn't like the Jetsons FWiW)!

    @@Frulas great minds think alike! However, you left out "right place, right time!" All 3 would be back in the lineup, if I had a say in it, as would the more aggressive musical tone that makes the original soundtrack tower above any other cast/production recordings. Here's a fun little experiment; Just listen to AC/DC from the 84 recording! It's essentially timeless! Then search KZread for the 2001 live performance of "everything in its right place" by Radiohead recorded at CANAL+ in France. I think you will essentially connect the dots I've just laid out. Am I insinuating one being influenced by the other? While that could be the case, I am not claiming that is the case. But rather, I'm trying to highlight that there are some remarkably similar and rather attention grabbing audio techniques between the two that rather effectively captivated the fans of both an extremely experimental and cutting edgelive act audience, as well as 1984 theate goers!

    I'm sure it's not easy doing what they do. But this show doesn't seem like it would bring much money in. I like the costumes and the skating but it seems messy. A small stage with that many ppl doesn't make alot of sense to me. Idk tho, this is just my opinion

  • @danteorfei4815
    @danteorfei481522 күн бұрын

    The costume designer and the musical director need to get the Lucasfilms "Kathleen Kennedy Treatment" IMMEDIATELY!!!! The set actually looks pretty cool. And from what I've heard, the plot has actually tilted back towards a synopsis that multiple age groups can dissect differently (IE it has more to offer mature viewers than the "all fluff/no complexity" 93 version... However, those costumes are (what I can only describe as) undoubtedly non copacetic! I don't want to say they are bad, because if there was a show about how the Time Lords hired the Jetsons to teach all the who's from whoville how to roller skate, they would prolly be fantastic! However, they just don't really make sense for Starlight Express because: #1) they don't really evoke or utilize connectable references to either the railroad equipment they are trying to represent or the idiosyncratic qualities of the character who wears them! For instance, the costume of Slick Oil doesn't really present an aesthetic to an Audience member (especially a child that likes trains) that can establish or distinguish her from the other freight cars as a tank car, a shady personality or even freight car (opposed to a coach or a locomotive)! In fact she just appears to be the yellow & black, punk rock Ghostbuster on roller skates who has happened to lose the gun portion of her proton pack! There is absolutely NOTHING about Electra and Greaseball that conveys to me (a complete train nut since infancy that can prolly pick up on the most subtle references normal ppl would miss) that makes me think either diesel or electric locomotives!!! And before a whole bunch of ppl wanna take the whole "human beings don't really look like trains" approach, I'll quickly say, " yep... That is 100% true, but the original team pulled it off in 1984 and the extremely low budget college production I saw in 2014 pulled it off in a completely different way and utilized a roller derby motif adorned with railroad related details and insignia to make up for expensive costuming shouting various railroad prototypes to the viewer! I was kinda hoping for this "revival" would take a similarly, creative "scaled down" costuming approach (limiting the really detailed/intricate costume aesthetics for the races - IE the quasi gladiatorial train transformative racing gear! I honestly think the costume designer should be incredibly embarrassed for failing to realize that the employment of racing helmets is the single costume tradition (that actually changes) between the various "official professional" productions of the show! Even the damn ice-capade version employed them and put their own spin on them! However, from what both your video brilliantly points out and the four extremely disappointing minutes of some bloke's video of the least creative encore of all time (I HATE the megamix BTW - if it were up to me, the only thing to be performed after LatEoT, would be material from previous iterations of the show that didn't appear in the first two acts {engine of love/whistle at me/etc - I didn't mention there's me or no comeback coz they would actually be back in the show}), the costume designer has an extremely limited knowledge when it comes to trains, the show itself and/or the show's history. They obviously also neglected to do any homework or research the aforementioned! I feel Mr. Luke "I don't want to be offensive" Sheppard/Shepherd/Whatever should be sticking his his skate into his mouth because he just gave the idiot costume designer a green light to present Dinah with here and southern draw as a tacky Raggedy Ann character, Electra as a non-binary dragon like character reminiscent of the witch from Disney's Sleeping Beauty. Pearl gets portrayed as a train car version of the hussy leg lamp from Xmas Story and the freight cars all look identical and can only be differentiated from one another by their name tags (sounds like someone might have an issue with a lack of identity between blue collar workers!)... 🤷🤨🙄

    It's also utter BO*!&CKS to say this show is a mess when they have clearly judged is solely on a very poor recording of the megamix which is a couple of minutes out of the whole show. This show does have soul and has so many positives including an amzingly talented cast who sing effortlessley and in tune whilst skating (including up large ramps). Shock horror...it's not the original version! in other news...it never pretends to be! it's new but respectful to the past and very recognisable as still being Starlight Express. IF you go expecting a carbon copy of what has gone before then you will be disappointed, if you go open minded and ready to embrace a new era then you will have a wild time. Some songs have been changed up, some new ones added (I AM ME and I DO) both work extremely well and HYDRA (A great character BTW) has his own little infectious ear worm of a song. The bridge that everyone seems to miss and bang on about is not there, not a game changer for me, the auditorium IS impressive, the effects are great, the sound wonderful, skating is certainly not slow and yes costumes are different, not bad, not worse...different BUT they work, There is a plot, as much of a one that a musical needs. This version blows the 90's tour version out of the water. So I say ignore the crap that is being written Jon, haters will hate and a lot of what is being said is based on the megamix videos online and as they are all recorded on phones so you don't get the real fun and feeling of a high that it actually leaves you on when you are there. For everyone else, if you really think you can't cope with Electra not having a Mohawk, if you are having panic attacks at the thought of a different skirt for Pearl, if your senses will be confused actually seeing Control rather than just hearing them and your brains cannot compute a gender change for Greaseball (A fabulous re-imagining of the character BTW) then maybe just stick to your memories of days gone by. Also.... in other shock news POPPA is now MOMMA...this also works well, U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D is not done in a country style anymore but the song is present, the stage revolves, there is fire, there are lazers and other special effect, there are projections, there are large screens. I think I have covered everything and will finish by saying...this is just my opinion but I have seen the show rather than just the megamix. Wow, I got more defensive of the show there than I thought I would! guess i'd rather read/see a more factual review than an attack on it,
