Stargate Universe: Berzerker Drones | Explained

Ойын-сауық

The Berzerker drones are a highly sophisticated, artificially intelligent, fully autonomous and belligerent robotic weapons system first encountered by the Destiny expedition upon making their way into the second galaxy, after the ship's sensors picked up a remote energy signature.

A human colony from the alternate timeline was destroyed by the drones, but in the newspaper they found on that world it said, "The attack came from space, some kind of machines that went after their technology." This somewhat implies they didn't create the drones.

Interesting, I didn't think of that. The show doesn't really make it clear exactly who made them. The Control ships that command the drones, however, were capable of FTL travel, while the ships that the human colonies built to evacuate their planet after a supervolcano erupted weren't capable of FTL travel. Since none of the human colonies had FTL technology, to me it seems unlikely they created the drones. Still, it's interesting to think about. Thanks for the comment.

This is my proprietary theory. Drones hates Destiny and always try destroy it. They can tracking stargate activity and wormhole. This mean they "know" ancient technology.

  • @DestinysComputer

    @DestinysComputer

But the drones communicate via a subspace link and the gate establishing a wormhole is a massive subspace event. It makes sense they can track gate usage, despite them not being familiar with Ancient technology, since its how the Control ships communicate between the drones.

It's entirely possible that the purpose of such a ruthless and persistent weapon is not so xenophobically focused. For instance, if we assume that the race that built these weapons were involved in a war, it would make sense for them to deploy such large amounts of drones to areas that they did not want their enemy to each. The drones ability to identify where and how a target chooses resupply points indicates that their original purpose may have been objective denial. For instance, if you were their enemy looking to set up a forward base in a particularly dead area of the galaxy, having these automated drones find patterns in how forward bases were selected and then predicting/blockading those locations would be very useful to prevent flanking. The desperate kamikaze attacks they make on destiny to inflict maximum damage would have had serious repercussions on any forward military deployment, potentially even causing the advancement to be aborted through the sheer damage these machines could inflict. It's quite possible that once the war was won or lost, these drones were simply 'hibernated' so the segment of space they occupied was left alone (perhaps no one could remember how to deactivate them or their effort was simply not worth it). Years later the Ursini begin to advance and reach a point of interstellar travel and inadvertently activated a command ship triggering the events we see today. It's a shame destiny never took advantage of the Ursinis's homeworld command ship being destroyed to visit the planet, without any serious technology left there the surviving Ursini might have been able to rebuild or salvage important technology.

@jamesmeppler6375 The bad blood between MGM and SyFy was the result of Stargate's demise most likely. I saw rumors online (Which I dismissed as Internet conspiracy theories ) before SGU really got introduced fully they had a three series contract. That MGM hated SyFy's minimizing their revenue and wanted the business relationship to end by making and canceling the third series and then went bankrupt. MGM going under financially was a lot more than the Stargate series poor profits, and SyFy is known to HATE any series it doesn't have full control of the rights too. In fact SyFy destroyed the Farscape sets and as many props as possible so Henson studios couldn't take the show elsewhere. It doesn't sound like working with SyFy under any name they've used is a pleasant business experience. So I think SGU was a symptom of the MGM/SyFy fued, and Stargate's "death". Amazon now owns MGM and plans to bring back Stargate. Sadly the Writers strike has stopped all work on it, and many are afraid it will either just die off, or they'll give it to Warner Brothers "Bad Robot" production company which seems to thrash every science fiction series it touches.

The creators of the Destiny show shouldn't have taken so long to get the plot moving forward. Especially since they knew MGM was financially in trouble and needed Destiny to be smash hit. The story should have hit the ground running from episode 1. Not waiting until late Season 2 for things to finally move forward. By then it was too late. Season 1 spent most of the time with forced drama and characters wanting to kill eachother. That's not a recipe for success.

Obviously based on Fred Saberhagen's 'Berserker' stories. The Star Trek original Series episode 'Doomsday Machine' was also derived from his work. Saberhagen's stories stated that an alien race had created the Berserkers to fight another race, and that the machines had gone Skynet on both species, and over the unknown amount of time between then and the advent of humanity developing interstellar travel had had their basic programming so scrambled that _all_ organic life was to be destroyed. Saberhagen even hinted that they might have come from another galaxy.

The Nox are extreme pacifists but they might not have always been that way, they could have even developed their hiding abilities as a result of these little bastards, lose control of them, then hide, then run, then settle in the milky way when they felt they were far enough away

SG-1 is definitely the best of Stargate, no doubt about it. Atlantis was good, but Wraiths weren't as cool as Goaulds or Replicators (which SGA later bring us too - not original at all). Same with members of SGA team - Sheppard was ok, Rodney was the most enjoyable, Teyla was boring and Ronon was often like muscles without brain. O'Neill, Daniel, Carter and Teal'c were more consistent team imho. And for SG Universe - it was kind of different yet very interesting and season 2 was a lot better than season 1.

What I wanted to have happen is for Eli or someone to find a way to reprogram dormant drones with no command ship and have the drones then consider Destiny their command ship. And if Destiny got enough drones it could use them to cover damaged areas of the ship, which would save power as shielding would not be needed. I wonder if the Command Ships/Drones have a way to repair or make new ships . . . or if all the Command ships that exist are the only ones that exist. If they have no way to replenish their numbers then the industrial capacity of the race that created the drones was immense.

i like the series even if it was a slow starter to begin with.....and would love it continue since i've watched sg1 and Atlantis + all the movies many times over the years. there is obviously a universal force at play (discovered by the ancients to begin with) but not followed through with the discovery .... there would be a possibility of one or more ancients could inhabit the ship alongside humans but hidden since they do not interfere in the lower planes OR one or more of the original builders of the ships could exist by uploading there own consciousness to the ship before setting it on it's path (they exist as long as the ship exists) since we already know minds or consciousness can be uploaded to it using the chair interface. the universal force while not directly observed can be seen affecting things such as the creation of a system with a star/planet that can sustain life ( albeit temporarily) and the return of the crew left behind .......the spire on the planet somehow managing/maintaining the planet and it's ecosystem for the crew to stop and restock , the planet was not meant to be settled but was a pitstop along the way heavily indicating the destiny and it's crew being closely observed in some fashion not to mention the return of the settlers AFTER they all died temporarily restoring them allowing them to say goodbyes and what not........all this indicates that universal force wants them to continue and is helping (much like the ancients do on occasion even when they are not meant too) now for the command ships and drones .........i can think of one thing that would fit into place somewhat..... first off it has been stated there are multiple seed ships and the only one encountered so far was the one closest to destiny after it's launch possibly delayed by the aliens onboard , what if the first seed ship was manned by a crew of ancients (just a thought) that ship became a generational ship and tech evolved along with the ancients and they eventually found somewhere to settle , they went on to create a defense system (command and drone ships) which had the capabilities similar to replicators but less advanced and like the replicators turned on the creators destroying them and then lay dormant until awakened by other races that eventually evolved out there.

Although I may have liked the SGU television series to have continued, all unanswered questions are essentially irrelevant in the end because the show is a production where many times the answers to questions brought up by events in the show were never actually addressed properly even before the filming is done because the producers always want to keep options open to them to change whatever aspect of the show they need to do for financial purposes. There were a lot of flaws in this particular offshoot of Stargate cinema but the numbers for revenue purposes were the only thing that counts so no matter how good or bad you believe the series was, it was cancelled because they didn't think it made enough money period.

It's implied the Berserkers were in a war with two galaxies neighboring each other, and Destiny unknowingly stumbled into what was left behind from one of these battles. As for who were their creators, it's difficult to say if was human from alternate universe, or a different species entirely. But in the end, it doesn't matter who created the Berserkers since their creators were probably long extinct by the time Destiny found them. The drones aren't programmed to reveal anything about creators anyway/ Why that is because they're only created to destroy anything with technology regardless of the species/ origin. But it's interesting to theorize who created them some distant point before the show.

sad the show was cancelled to soon in it's life. would have been nice if they could have collected. more of these drones over time after destroying the control ships. maybe even figured out how to get control of the control ships. they might have been slow collect a good number of them. for defensive means with a bit of reprograming in there source code. possibly even found a way to backwards engineer them. so they could then send that data to earth for defensive means. while also making themselves more of them as time went on. from materials they collected a long the way.

Me too. Even if they're not thinking of bringing back this as a television series, they at least could bring it back as a comic book series, novel or a animated series. Things that doesn't need as big of a budget like a live action TV series.

The drones were created by dr rush. At some point in the series they come across destroyed civilizations created by their future selves. The implication being that the crew broke into two factions and developed different societies. For whatever reason, the two societies destroyed each other. I think rush created the drone ships in a last ditch effort to stop it all from ever happening. If the crew were killed then the societies they later created would never be. This is why rush seems to have some kind of familiarity with the drones motivations. It would also explain how the drones seem to know where destiny will be.

The problem with these types of shows is that they are absolutely fantastic....for like 2 seasons. These lost in space, survival, dark shows are horrible escapism genres which is basically what scifi kind of is for most people. No one wants to go through a hell of a day and watch their beloved characters in a fantasy world go through a hell of a day, not everyday anyways. Soon you get tired of it or even if you don't you most certainly become numb to it and that makes the stakes seem forced. It isn't a good formula to have if you are planning a series that is going to go for the long run. Firefly 1 season, Dark Matter 3 seasons, Battlestar Galactica 4 seasons, star trek discovery has had horrible reception after only 1 season and I doubt the 2nd will be better, this just isn't a popular formula to use even if you have creative gold.

Rush was an incredible and well-developed character it would be great if Netflix or Hulu picked up an even more mature and darker SGU series in the vein of Westworld. Unfortunately, these days studio heads would reboot SGU and replace Rush with some SJW icon with an agenda simlar to the path Star Trek and Star Wars have traveled.

The same mindset is driving out Marvel Comics out of publishing comics. The rumor is Marvel/Disney will soon be licensing the characters out to other companies to publish and market. The SJW writing and drawing the crap don't care if the comics die with Stan Lee, they will just move on to working for Buzzfeed or some nonsence.

"Mr. Brody's bullet-making project" was pure bullshit. You can't make modern military grade ammunition without precision equipment which they didn't have. I'll be generous and allow they could make gunpowder. However they couldn't make the military grade bullets or shell casings. And they never once used brass catchers to collect spent shell casings so they could be reused. As to the lame Twin Destinies excuse. First they'd have been out of ammunition long before that episode occurred. Second the the crew of the twin Destiny would have also run out of ammunition at the same time as the first Destiny. In SGU the soldiers carried FN P90's which used a 50 round ammunition clip. The weapon fires 900 rounds per minute (that means on full auto the mag is emptied in 3-5 seconds) and a modern soldier expecting to go into combat is issued at least 7 magazines so lets round up to 10 mags. That's only 500 rounds each In just one of their sustained firefights during the first season a soldier would have fired all 500 rounds in a few minutes because they always fired on full auto.

When did they use ammo? Water: Young fired a few shots to break up frozen waterfall pieces. Gorman fired a couple shots into cloud of alien bugs. Time: They most certainly ran out of bullets in the first time loop. They only fired a few shots in the second. They might have fired a few in the third to kill squigglers Justice: Spencer put one in his brain. Human: Greer fired a few shots at a "Spider". Lost: Scott unloaded a few at a "Dinosaur". Incursion: Many shots fired, but it was all over in less than a couple minutes. Anyone injured by the explosion wouldn't have had a chance to fire. Also, Lucian Alliance brought their own weapons and ammunition, which added to the total. Greer and Scott got into a firefight at the end. Awakening: Greer fired a couple rounds at an escaping Ursini. Malice: Simeon took one automatic and one handgun (and several mine-type bombs). He fired a couple rounds at Scott, a couple at a Kino, and a few at Greer. Greer fired a couple at Simeon. Rush put one in Simeon's brain after Simeon took several shots at him. Twin Destinies: Existing weapons & ammo doubled. The Hunt: No shots were fired, that we know of, until nightfall, after the Lucian Alliance had joined, presumably with their own (double) weapons. Greer was wasting his clips, but others were more careful with their shots. There was only one skirmish in which they had the chance to get off rounds, and it lasted about 30 seconds, and many were killed. Presumably their weapons and ammo were recovered. Common Descent: Scott and Greer engaged in automatic weapons fire with drones for roughly 12 seconds. Blockade: Young, Scott, and Greer in automatic weapons fire with a drone for slightly over a minute and a half, firing in one to two second bursts. The reason they didn't run out of bullets is because they used them sparingly. Brody wasn't making bullets until towards the end of the second season. Once they had control of the ship and its systems, they could have easily found precision milling equipment on board Destiny, probably more advanced than our own technology. This is the kind of equipment that a long-distance mission ship would be likely to have. He had the capability of turning mined palladium into parts for the stasis pod. Any shell casing spent in Incursion could have been recovered, which is where most of the ammunition they spent was used. There was exactly one sustained firefight in season one. It would be likely that the supplies they carried to the ship included lots of weapons and ammo, in addition to what the soldiers could carry themselves. Besides, is there a show out there that keeps a realistic count on its ammo? SG-1 or SGA? Have you ever seen movies like Rambo or Commando? The leads would have had to have carried a few tons of ammo on their person to get off that many shots. Why the sudden scrutiny now?

To be honest, All stargate ship mounted weapons are in the multi megaton range..destiny's shields were deigned to withstand the pressures and temperature of stars..specifically. They operated with a frequency shifting system. the weakest ships such as the Gao'uld motherships could fire 200 megaton blasts and withstand 1,000 megaton blasts respectively without taking any damage. destiny is clearly superior to that era of technology and yet the drones can still cause damage to her...In other words these drones are likely superior to any Gao'uld ships and even the older Asgard ships. they stated that the drones were able to adapt, i.e find weaknesses in defences and exploit them.

SGU was the worse of all of the Stargate shows, it felt more like a soap opera than a sci-fi show. The story took way too long to develop and there were too many plot holes in it, especially when it came to interacting with Ancient and alien technology. It never felt like any of the other Stargate shows or movies. I have tried several times to watch it on Prime, but always get bored and give up.
