    Not only was that city flooded by ocean water and went 10000 years without maintenance but it was also hit by an Asuryan beam weapon and a meteor swarm quite recently. Still takes a hard water landing with no issue. Lanteans must have had insanely good architects.

    The strange thing I always think about is how little evidence there is of the Atlantis' presence on it's previous planet. A geothermal power station and one second hand puddle jumper, both on the bottom of the ocean, is all Atlantis left on that world.

    I appreciate the writers actually giving a fairly realistic portrayal of what it's like to de-orbit a spacecraft. (IE: not going straight down)

  • @gg5115

    @gg5115

    5 жыл бұрын

    Actually, I don't think this is realistic. They weren't in orbit, they just arrived. There is no reason they couldn't just drop straight down. You have full maneuverability in space. Just pull up over your spot, come to a relative stop in the upper atmosphere, and cut the engine. Well, you'd want some counter-thrust before splashdown. The space jump scene in the star trek movie was realistic as hell. As opposed to everything we put in orbit, which we skim along the surface of the atmosphere at 17,000 miles per hour. That of course, needs to slow down a lot, to get to the hundreds of miles per hour range of the lower atmosphere, and somewhat slower at the end if it is a splashdown.

  • @Blackholefourspam

    @Blackholefourspam

    5 жыл бұрын

    Geoff Graham If energy isn't an issue than you may have a point but they specifically mention draining a lot of power getting there. Maintaining a shield and aerobraking is one thing, maintaining a steady velocity slow enough to not strain the shield anyways is another. It might actually cost them less energy in the long run to get to a near orbit velocity before entering just to allow them to sink most of that potential energy into the atmosphere over a larger time frame. You can't even take advantage of a suicide burn since slamming into the atmosphere is just as bad as hitting the surface at those speeds. Jump scenes are only realistically effective if you don't plan to stick around long enough to fall to the planet, or if you assume they jump to a point where their velocity relative to the body puts them in a circular orbit. In the later case, Atlantis was in orbit anyways when it jumped to that position.

  • @gg5115

    @gg5115

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Blackholefourspam Well, we are never really told what the velocity is coming out of hyperspace. In theory, it should be zero, but they make a window and drive into it, so you expect that exit velocity. Which may well be 17,000 miles per hour or faster. That's kinda poky when you're driving around solar systems. Probably closer to a million miles an hour cruising speed is what you'd want. Also, did they catch the planet in spring or fall, coming or going? The Earth is going about 67,000 miles an hour around the sun. If you catch it coming at you, and have 100,000 relative miles an hour to shave off, then I think you might cause global warming shaving all that off using the atmosphere. The show isn't that complicated I guess. It still seems a lot cheaper to just maneuver to your spot and drop, since you have to have the ability to maneuver pretty fast anyway, rather than use the shields to dissipate all that energy.

  • @aresthecrazy9335

    @aresthecrazy9335

    4 жыл бұрын

    Geoff Graham I hate to do this, but you are making several assumptions here, we are never told the size of the planet Atlantis is landing on in this clip. It could be larger or smaller at which point the orbital velocity changes drastically. The second assumption is hyperspace velocity, it’s actually addressed in a brief statement in SG-1, in that most ships use their Sublight engines to slow down after exiting hyperspace, now Atlantis trying to save power might have skipped that step and in the prior episode it’s stated that Atlantis is hurtling through space at several thousand miles per second, since hyperspace conserves momentum when you exit it like a wormhole, that basically means Atlantis exited the window at or near Orbital velocity above the new planet. Hoped that cleared a few things up.

    I forget if it was mentioned during the episode, but I believe Sheppard came in that fast to shorten the duration of using the ZPM so it would have more power left.

  • @luminatrixfanfiction

    @luminatrixfanfiction

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't think so. The city was only operating with just one ZPM instead of 3 so he probably only had a 1/3 of the power to feed into the sublight engines. Also going faster against the Atmosphere would create more heat, radiation and friction which would put more strain on the shields. If anything that would have created even more power drain. You also have to consider that Atlantis' main power conduits were damaged and leaking tons of power even with the patchhold they came up with. So Atlantis probably wasn't even using 1/3 of the power (one zpm) because a lot of the energy was being leaked.

    You didn't know that??? Its the show's official continuation and is INCREDIBLE!!! The first 6 books (there's 8) focus on the war with the Wraith and their new leader, Queen Death. Gives more background for several characters, including the Wraith. Has canon Sheppard/Teyla eventually and heavy hints of canon Sam/Jack. The last two books focus on them dealing with the Pegasus Asgard and the return of Doctor Elizabeth Weir. She appears sporadically through the first six books and plays a big role in her own way in the final battle with the Wraith. Aiden Ford also returns in book 8 and we finally learn what happened to him after The Hive. INCREDIBLE series!!!

(This instance being the city shield itself) it is a byproduct of atmospheric entry and unless you enter the atmosphere at subsonic speeds (impossible when slowing down from orbital speeds because then you make it worse by falling pretty much straight down and accelerate up to supersonic speeds again anyway) I hope I was able to clear things up for you there.

    Something I never understood about the series. There's Atlantis, the crown jewel of the Lantean civilization and repository of all of their knowledge, and yet no one ever thought, "Gee, how did they make the ZPM's for powering their technology? How's about we look in THE DATABASE right here AT OUR FINGERTIPS and then make as many ZPM's as we need". The replicators didn't seem to have any issues in producing as many ZPM's to power all of their own city-sized ship star-drives. Why couldn't the SGC:A team do the same with THE ORIGINAL DATABASE?

    Michael Dobrey because the entire database is in the Ancient language, very few people in the Stargate franchise actually read/speak Ancient. Two people I know for a fact can read ancient are Dr. Jackson (SG-1 and not assigned to the Atlantis expedition) and Dr. Wier. (Head of Atlantis Expedition and spent a large part of her time focusing on the expedition itself, only looking in the database when she had an open moment or when a task needed it, which was rare)

    Well if they want to land without exploding the do have power in some kind. Space Shuttles cannot be slowed down by friction alone. Also too much friction could damage the hull. Actually they come in as Gently as possible to not risk hull breach in the re-entry and slow down when their back on earth. Since their built like an airplane they can brake with their wings by pointing up the ships nose. And on landing they use parachutes to brake. Reusable rockets either use parachutes too and get fished out of the water or catched by ships / helicopter with a net or use their thrusters to brake and land on a platform on the ocean like SpaceX Rockets.
