Starfield is an action role-playing video game. Players can switch between a first-person and third-person perspective any time in the game. Starfield features an open world in the form of an area within the Milky Way galaxy, containing both fictional and non-fictional planetary systems, with players being able to land on more than 1,000 planets and an unspecified number of moons and space stations. The majority of the landscapes within the game were procedurally generated; they were subsequently modified and handcrafted content was developed around them. The game will generate the terrain and the alien flora and fauna of a planet depending on the star of its system and its atmosphere, as well as locations of interest as the player approaches a planet. The largest city in the game, New Atlantis, is the largest fictional city Bethesda has ever developed. As the player explores the game world, they will encounter various non-playable characters (NPCs), some of whom may join the player's crew. Such NPCs may aid the player in combat, carry items, or during confrontations, speak to other NPCs on the player's behalf. Some may comment on choices the player makes. The player may station crew members at any of their constructed outposts. Each companion character has their own unique skills and abilities. Some recruitable NPCs are able to be romanced by the player.
At the game's beginning, the player may customize their character, who is a silent protagonist. This includes choosing their body type, voice type, appearance, background, and (optionally) traits. Choosing the background of the player character will unlock three starting skills. As the player progresses, they will also unlock additional traits which may aid or hinder them. For instance, the Introvert trait grants players more endurance when travelling alone, but reduces their endurance when travelling with a companion. Most or all traits are removable through quests or certain actions. As the player progresses, they will gain experience and level up, allowing them to unlock new abilities found in the game's five distinct skill trees: Physical, Social, Combat, Science, and Tech. Each skill can also be ranked up by completing related challenges. A variety of firearms, explosives, and melee weapons may be used to defeat enemies. Most weapons are customizable via attachments. Equipping a telescopic sight enhances a weapon's accuracy while equipping a suppressor may engender a stealth-oriented playing style. The player is additionally able to equip various jetpacks (called boostpacks), which aids the player in both combat and the traversal of impassable or challenging environments. When landed on a celestial body, the gravitational force acting upon the player varies depending upon the body's mass. This may also affect combat.[
Prior to landing, the player may scan planets to view their natural resources. These must be extracted or harvested to fulfill many crafting recipes. Outposts can be erected by the player; these can serve as homes or to facilitate resource-extraction operations. In these outposts, the player can install Laboratories to research craftable items and upgrades, which are sorted into five categories: Pharmacology, Food & Drink, Outpost Development, Equipment, and Weaponry. Outposts can be constructed from a first-person perspective and an isometric perspective.
The player may also construct, purchase, or commandeer spaceships. At various "spaceports" located on planets, the player can buy and sell parts and spaceships, or have their own repaired. The game features a modular ship customization system, allowing players to modify their ships' central components, facilities, rooms, paint color, decorations, and weapons. Larger spaceships may possess greater storage capacity and living space but a lower maximum speed and shorter maximum Jump Range. Weapons must be equipped to defend the player's spaceship during ship combat. Ships feature a "power allocation" system, whereby the player must prioritize which systems receive levels of power at any given time. During combat, the player may opt to allocate power to weapons systems rather than their ship's "Grav Drive". Both hostile and peaceful NPC-piloted spaceships can be boarded. The player may plunder the ship, kill its occupants, commandeer the ship, speak or trade with its occupants, or return to their own ship.

I'm an old school gamer, in my time the side stuff was not side stuff. So I had to adapt to the modern approach at games with time. So what I do is this: -> I do a bit of main story -> Then I do some side stuff -> I start jumping between both -> When I feel like the story is gong to end I start doing some more side stuff. -> If I feel like I'm getting burned on the game I immediately go and finish the story. -> Then if I'm still interesting in the game I continue doing side stuff until I'm bored.

I have a similar app. In some games it feels really natural to do side stuff as you go along the main story, and those are the games that tend to hook me most. Where the 2 start to blend together naturally and i don't need to plan out a gaming session with how much of the story i want to do

Idk man. Not only do I not sense the excitement from Todd that you do (I sense some excitement of course, but not _exceptionally_ high excitement), but I think that EVEN IF I did sense that exceptional excitement from a game director, it wouldn’t necessarily give me any more confidence in a game. Specifically in regards to certain devs like BGS. Because I think there are fundamental things that I care about or see as a big deal, that Todd doesn’t. Even things like “the acceptable state to a release a game in” or “tolerable number of bugs” or “the right amount quality-of-life features” or “acceptable concessions” or even possibly “satisfactory frame rate”… are all examples of things that I tend to disagree with Todd (and perhaps some other devs too) about. It’s all just my subjective opinion of course. But because of that, I can see a situation where Todd is SUPER SUPER HYPED about something, and it ends up being “meh” or even disappointing _TO ME._ That said, I’m incredibly excited to try Starfield. Someone gifted me an Xbox just because they knew how badly I wanted to play this game. So hopefully whatever concessions they did make will end up making sense and being worth it to me. (And the thing that I am absolutely NOT OKAY with and I can’t even believe people use it to excuse certain things is “it’s okay, modders will fix that.” Don’t even release a game on consoles if that’s part of your strategy, cuz that’s lame.)

I am a side stuff first player 99% of the time. There has been a few games that the main story just sucked me in so much that I couldnt stop, that was my first playthrough of the Witcher 3. The urgency of finding Ciri was just so well done that i genuinely felt like I would get a different ending if it took me too long to circle back to. I still think it would be cool for that to be the case, but thats probably controversial

Definitely a sides stuff first player. I find it hard to do the main story if I haven't done all the side stuff first. Sometimes it's actually detrimental to play this way, because I can get burned out on a game before I've beaten it, or, it can make what's supposed to be an epic finale trivial because I got too overpowered by doing all the side stuff first. Can't tell you how many final bosses I've smoked in seconds because the game let me get too overpowered. Very anti-climactic, and it's largely self-inflicted lol.

Main story vs. side stuff depends on the flow of the narrative for me. Open world games are all about immersion in my mind and if it makes sense for me to have a break and venture out and live the life of the character given what just happened in the main storyline, then I’ll wander and live that life. If things feel imperative that I move the next big plot line right away or I’d feel guilty as that character for ignoring it, I press on.

I have a tendancy to do a lot of side quests before I move on with the main story because of my experiences with old PS1 RPGs. Their format was usually, do side quests when you can because if you move the story along you may move past those side quests and fail/miss them. Also it was rare to have games continue going after the main story was completed, so its now ingrained in me to make absolutely sure I am done with everything else before I finish the main story.

I do side content interspersed throughout my journey through the main quest. I try to make it feel as natural as possible EI, i try to do must side quests as i pass them along my journey so i don't back track a ton. This feels best in games like the witcher 3. Pass through new town on way to main objective, stop and fullfil local contracts to make some coin, talk to people and help them solve their stupid human problems, maybe make some new gear, move on towards objective again. When i start a game with a long story and lots of side content, i usually try to only do one main quest at most per play session until i get further into the game and either want to just finish, or start to run out of side content if I'm still so into the game i wanna do it all

I like to do all the side stuff before I finish the main story but I do it in batches, I'll progress the main story a bit and then do a big chunk of side stuff until the only thing I have left is the end of the main story. If I focus mostly on the main story I tend to lose interest after and move on to the next game on my list. I'm the kind of gamer that likes to 100% a game (or as much as I care to depending on the title) and then move on to the next one and never look back!

I generally start the story because a lot of the time you will get some important item or ability within the first few missions and then I go all out doing/ collecting side quests until I feel like progressing the story a bit more. So usually like a 4/1 ratio of side quests to main story depending on how many side quests there are vs main story length. It makes games take a super long time to complete.

Well, the "200 endings" line given in the video is a highly-dubious statement. It's not wrong, but it's just combinations of 29 slides, less than Fallout 2's number, and far less than New Vegas' 190 slides. It's not lying, it's manipulative phrasing and specific interpretation (while hiding the actual problems well away from the public eye). It's the old "What I said was true... from a certain point of view." I'm more concerned about Bethesda's questionable grasp of narrative.

You get to play the game early (for streamers this would be nice) 3. You're supporting a struggling company who earnestly are trying to make a good game I once heard someone argue "There is no scenario where I will not buy this game, so I might as well pre-order". There is no benefit to pre ordering (apart from what I mentioned above), you are literally just excluding options and locking yourself into a position you cant back away from. That said, judge the game based on it's merits when it comes out, not on what we were expecting.

@@jarod317 probably the most prevalent dead TTRPG system ever. It has well over 400 books covering every scenario you could think of but its pretty rare to see people actually play it. A summary of the system would be that it allows for any kind of character, monster, item, robot, or other object to be built with the exact same ruleset making it possible to play in any setting with any character. Honestly though its probably more accurate to call GURPS a TTRPG engine that you build a TTRPG from because the game master needs to pick which rules to use and which rules to ditch, no one would ever use all the rules unless you absolutely wanted the most realistic game ever and were willing to remember hundreds of pages of rules.

I intentionally avoided the trigger area and went to 30+ without having any shouts.. The ship building looks awesome. I like the sound of it taking time to so we see progress over the course of a playthrough. For me it's the fact it's also effectively our house/base. I have dabbled in modded Minecraft and my absolute favourite moment was building a mobile base to fly around explore, with a safe place that I can sleep in and store my stuff. With starfield the fact we can also steal ships, board them. Upgrade our ships over time. Just sounds so cool.

It depends. I tend to follow the main story in order to unlock features/events I want to explore. The more content that is locked behind the main story, the more quickly I will pursue it to completion. But in FO4 for example, I spend most of my time building and managing settlements, and pursuing mod storylines (eg. Sim Settlements 2). For Starfield, I think I will spend most of my time on ship building and outpost building/management, so it really depends how much of that content is locked behind the main story. I typically do finish the main story as I get curious - but I could see myself spending 60+hrs before I even start work on the main story. Mind you, Todd did seem to indicate the things I am most interested in are more late-game content, so I may end up pursuing the main story in order to get the revenue streams up to do that stuff.

My theory on why there's no on planet flight or rovers is because the traversable worlds are actually a little smaller than we think. • @LiveEnd06

Tbh I kinda think it will no matter what. 1000 planets is way too big a promise, even for Bethesda, and frankly I'd be willing to bet that 600-800 of those planets will be boring and empty copy-pasted repeat planets, and I doubt even 50 or 100 of the planets will be interesting. Past that, sure not having a river or vehicle isn't a big deal, but only having the jetpack to hop around here and there doesn't seem like it's gonna last for hundreds and hundreds of hours because of how much there is to explore. I get the counter-argument of "well fallout and Skyrim don't have vehicles so hur-dur" but just because they didn't, doesn't mean vehicles wouldn't be a nice addition, and even past that, it's not like players would have to use the vehicles if they were in the game. You could still very well play it like you would Fallout and let the other players who want to use the vehicles just have fun. That's like saying Elden Ring players who don't like using summons, sure you can make your game harder, but people who just want to have fun can use the summons or vehicles in Starfield.

If I burn through the story and am disappointed, I don’t feel like doing any side-stuff. I am doing as much side stuff as possible and then do Main Story sporadical in between. This is also because some side stuff is repetitive and I like to change up my gameplay with story in between so the side stuff isn’t as boring or feel like a chore. The other reason for me to do side stuff before is also because some maps change depending on the story, e.g. some parts of the map changes, gets destroyed, you get to a different part of the map without getting the option to go back etc.

Personally I don't see why it'd be a design choice. I get that Skyrim or Fallout kinda relied on walking around, but those aren't games where your supposed to explore hundreds of planets. And sure we have a little booster pack but frankly that doesn't seem good enough for long term traversal. I also don't like the argument against it because if you don't want to use vehicles and just walk around everywhere, then don't use them yourself and let people who use them enjoy it. It's like summons in Elden Ring; if you want the game to be harder then don't use them, but if you want to have fun then go for it and use summons or in this case vehicles in Starfield.

Narratively, it's pretty bad - the plotline where there's people now sits on top of the plotline where everyone is dead, and constantly get in each other's way. The final boss happens every hour or two. Depending on what Event is on, magical bullshit could be happening every hour on the hour. There's half a dozen powerful, technologically advanced pre-war secret societies that still exist, somehow. And so on. The size limit on your storage is extremely small. Can't carry much. They way I do sidequests is I'll do all the sidequests in the area in which the main story is and kind of ignore any other areas until the main story takes me there, but I will always do the main story stuff in each of those areas last to keep that big end goal to work towards. I find that as soon as I finish the main quest and story and lose that big character motivation and narrative goal I drop the game regardless of whether I've finished all the side content or not because I feel like the story has ended and so has my character's arc.

In terms of mods, what I want the most for the game is a Halo themed overhaul, as well as a Star Wars themed overhaul. Halo & Star Wars weapons, enemies, armor, locations, ships, etc.

Love your breakdown videos, Luke. You're an intelligent individual, and your approach that is focused on logic now, excitement later after the game has released, is something everyone should take note of. I also 100000% agree with you that the Ship Builder system is probably the thing I'm most excited about, I want to build a fleet of custom ships, spend hours just detailing every module, features and paint job, go out in open space and mine resources, build a network of outposts to help transport and divide resources for my ships and weapons, explore derelict ships, taking ships after dog fights.. all of that is why I want to play the game. And even though there are already some games like that, they don't have the story, characters, side quests and freedom that BGS games usually have (some of them, anyway...)

....what games are there like that? I 'd love to know lol. Just depth of the ship building alone kinda puts Starfield on an island by itself.

I’m surprised more people aren’t disappointed by this game having far less romance options than previous Bethesda games although being so much larger

Definitely an even mix of main quests and side quests for me. If you do too much of one you ruin the other, in most cases atleast. Like you'll be overpowered and end up blasting through the campaign missions if you do to much side quests/ adventuring in open world games.

One thing I’m worried about is the difficulty. All the enemies seemed mindless and did almost no damage when shooting the player. I don’t want to be able to just steamroll every hostile NPC I encounter

The gameplay demos are usually always played in god mode which would be why it looks like you take no damage.

side stuff main quest, depends on the game, but usually side stuff if it helps my character level up faster. I really like when games make an effort to reward players for doing the side quests, like in horizon zero dawn, the final mission gives you a warning before starting. And there's actual changes (admittedly minor) to the final mission depending on choices.

As a general rule, I always try to "clear" a location before going onto the next step of the main story. For instance, I have recently gotten around to playing Mass Effect 1, and I did my best to do clear up the entirety of the Assignments before moving into Virmine, and then again before going to Ilos. Since it's pretty easy to keep track of all the missions, I feel comfortable going about the game that way. For Bethesda games, however, I usually mix it up a lot more, doing a bit of sidequests and bit of main story interchangeably. Due to massive scale of them, I feel overwhelmed trying to do everything before moving on, and usually the quests are a bit of a nuisance to go around. All in all, I feel that Starfield (like most Bethesda RPG titles) is right up my alley when it comes to gameplay mechanics, and if it works as intended, it might well become my favorite game of all time (unless ES6 fixes combat and magic from Skyrim or an extremely unlikely, highly innovative pokémon game hits).

I prefer to do everything at the same time, the main story along with the side stuff, but giving more priority to side stuff. When I finish the main story it gives me a feeling that the game is finished. And, I've been playing Skyrim since July 2nd 2014.. I have over 2.000 hours (which for me is a lot) and I've never finished the main story.

As someone whose beeen playing since the early 90s. Games always directed me to do side quests first, because once you finished the story, thats it the end, you couldnt go back, and considering doing side stuff helped make you more powerful. Yea. Probably why regen mobs and grinding irratate me so much. Ive gkne and cleaned that area of gobbos for the village to be safe, not for them to alive 5 minutes later, it breaks the sense of accomplishment and progression and reinforces that everything im doing is pointless in the same way mobs are always around the same level as you, so if they were annoying to begin with, they will be just as much later no matter how many more skills or trained ability youve gained unless youve commited hours into muscle memory, which no one has time for

I am one of those players that played ES III, IV, and V and never finished the main quest line because I was so busy doing all manner of side quests! 😅 There are some quests that won't be available if said quest giver dies, or if I finish the main story and certain quests are no longer available.

3:03 until a year or 2 ago I hadn't gone to see the Greybeards. Once I figured out the dragons don't spawn until you give the Dragonstone to _jarl Balgruf's top guy,_ I stopped going to Bleak Falls Barrow as well in new characters. Instead I like to start with some of the guilds depending on the type of character. In Starfield I intend to find out how much Helgening the game does along a "main quest" intro, before I can get in a ship and become a space trucker, pirate, ace, explorer, miner, etc.

3:40 I'm a mix, I play them simultaneously, I focus a bit on the story quests and when I get to a part in the story where there seems to be a hold of sorts (whether it's discovering a new city, town or area, accomplishing something or after a big event in the game...) then I start doing some side quests, and after that I get back into the main quests, I think that's the most balanced gameplay experience you can have, at least in Skyrim since the game doesn't force you to hold onto one or the other, you don't feel like you're grinding or missing on to the plot of main story since the side quests are just as good, if not better (sorry for my shit grammar)
