    The Starfarer/Gemini is freedom. A hull series or some other trader is forced to go where the trade is required. They are either at the beck and call of contracts driven by the market, or are speculating directly on the market (and taking high risks with their own money). Starfarers mine fuel, which is required everywhere. They can fill their cargo on day one with no money down. They can make money wherever they prefer to be. Of course they will make more selling fuel where it is more risky. Hull series expecially dare not go anywhere that is not the most secure without heavy escort, and this greatly limits their profitability. Starfarers on the other hand carry fuel, not exactly something that pirates would gain from looting. They might shake down a Starfarer for free refueling, or they might try to board the ship to capture it, but the typical gank strategy of "shoot it till it stops then loot the cargo" will not apply to Starfarers. A regular Starfarer can be operated by a single pilot. Having one NPC along to man the top gun is optional, as one could easily retrofit that turret to be automated. For the more dangerous spaces where pirate boarding actions might be a threat, the Gemini is more apropos, with a full compliment of seven crew. A solo pilot has no chance of fending off pirate boarders. Seven crew on the other hand, especially with a few strategically placed, after market automated internal gun turrets, could make the pirate's lives difficult in the extreme. There would appear to be a lot more available space inside a Starfarer/Gemini than one finds in most other ships. This in theory means that that space could be 'tricked out' to expand the ship's capabilities well beyond it's stock options. There would easily be room to add an extra power plant, extra shield generator, an electronic warfare suite, etc., assuming that CIG has truly implemented their modularity system. Finally, the Starfarer has a rather nice weapon's suite. The Gemini is stated as having bigger versions of those weapons. While no ship in the game can survive a pirate gank (player pirates will only attack if they know they can win), the Gemini will probably be able to mess up at least one pirate enough for them to not be happy. That makes Gemini's rather unattractive to pirates except as a boarding prize, and while they are boarding you and you slowing them down with your seven crew and automated internal turrets, your guild and every bounty hunter within radio distance is bearing down on the scene of the crime.

    Peter Cohen I will choose the Star G, for a few reasons, first, it comes with a LTI, I can get it blown up as many times as I like (or when time comes), then as said, it is more combat capable. So here's the point, I know many people love going into war zones and end up a frozen corpse, that's what I do in EVE, and if that's the case and at the same time, you realize that you aren't actually a top gun or dog fighter, the Star G is the best option at hand as far as I can tell, for logistic vessels are essential components of a fleet, both military and commercial, the Star G extends the operational range of ships. Although the host is very right about the escort part, but this is what I think, in an organization that has or capable to form a fleet, this ship will be very welcomed and will be deployed near the front line to maximize it's effect, either refuel vessels that are going out for deep space exploration, of combat vessels coming back for a refuel straight from the front. The point is, Starfarers are extremely valuable targets (at least for me) for a guerrilla squadron. So, I put it in EVE's way, if you like to trade in high-sec, choose the standard version, but I sure the hell not; if you would like to operate in low-sec area for either trading or logistic, Star G. Now let me get my card...

    Peter Cohen With its system, the Starfarer/Gem is the only ship you'll ever need to explore (possibly). Remove some tanks, keeping some to collect and refine fuel and throw in whatever sensor suites you can. Provided air and such are things which can be restored on-board (no need to land for food/water etc), you could go out on day one and come back to civilization after a few years.

    Star-G is the better option for me. Cant make money if your dead. In the end, you have to ask yourself a question - do you really want to rely completely on the competence of your escort (and you will need an escort) or do you want to guarantee a far better survival in any situations whatsoever? The answers would be - could you guarantee your escorts will be there and be good enough to scare off anything and everything? If your answer is yes, then the Starfarer is for you. Or if you want to have the oppportunity to wander off to a gas giant to collect raw fuel knowing full well you have the arms and armour to survive enemy encounters, coupled with a guarantee that if your escorts get too gung-ho and leave you for dead chasing enemies too far, or if they are incompetent, you WILL survive. If this is more your thing, then the Star-G is for you.

    +mouseno4 You won't though(imo), that's the problem. Those slightly better stats won't help you survive in my opinion. Which is why I went with the standard StarFarer. In either case if you're attacked by a flight of ships that know what they are doing, you being in a Gemini or not isn't going to help you much. To quote an earlier Chris Roberts game, the Starfarer will “maneuver like a pregnant yacht.” And if you check the actual physical location of the turrets, you'll see that maneuvering around the guns is going to be very easy for whomever is attacking you.

  • @mouseno4

    @mouseno4

    I very much disagree with you on that. Superior shields, armour, weaponry and if you choose, missile racks on the nose. That will help me immensely. And whats more, if you look at the location of the turrets and their effective firing arcs, there is very little room where an enemy can hide. The ship is very well armed. Twin unmanned turrets in the ventral positions, one on either side. One gigantic turret on the roof behind the cockpit and two massive guns on either side of the cockpit that, if you watch the Freelancer video, can turn completely sideways. So no, defensively the Gemini is far better off than the Starfarer. If you ever hope to go into dangerous space outside of the UEE controlled areas, you better hope you paid a bit more and got more survivability. The base model is for those that have no intention of entering lawless space. The Gemini, CAN.

    mouseno4 I disagree. Unmanned turrets are just that.. UNMANNED.. In other-words how are you going to target an enemy to your side if you have no view of him?? In 3rd person mode you'd essentially be guessing. And with only 2 size 4 shields on a ship of that size you're going to get downed VERY fast regardless of your missiles/turrets. I reckon 3 cutlasses could take the Gemini without much of a sweat. The starfarer is not a combat vehicle period.. if you get into a fight.. it's already over.. that's what makes the Gemini redundant and not a good option.

    +undefinablereasoning 100% agree with this. If you plan on picking a Star-G because you think you will win gun fights you're picking the wrong ship. It is a slow dying whale in lawless space without proper escort.

    great reasoning here about which one is better. The armour on the Star G is only going to get you so far and for reduced maneuverability then its a no brainer and i'd much prefer not to get shot at. I also don't really get why the forums are blowing up over this, saying that CIG are going back on a promise for no more Lti. Seems to me the ones bitching the most are the ones that paid through the nose on the grey market to get one of these. Also if they're saying that Lti is supposed to be limited then that's just dumb as they just sold a shed load of Hull A's that many are saving for future CCU purposes and not then we're about to have the Reliant starter come out soon too which will also have Lti and be cheaper still - so that will fly off the shelves for later CCU options. My preferred option as an Original Backer with almost exclusively Lti ships is that they just give Lti to everyone that has paid Real Cash for ships before the PU launch. Sadly there's a vocal minority that will bitch about losing their perks when its not impacting them in any way. CIG could even give OB/VB members a replacement token perk for the loss of exclusivity like a hangar flair or skin for each ship they own.

    Von Choker I gotta disagree with your reasoning on the Star G vs the Starfarer. No matter how maneuverable the Starfarer is, there isn't any way you're going to outrun, or outmaneuver a fighter craft. So in the end the stronger shields, heavier armor, and better weapons are more important at the end of the day.

    +Phantom Zero I agree, plus the devs said the stats page is wrong so the Star G has one size larger guns and main engines. That's 3xTR5s and some REALLY BIG turrets, I don't see any but the most desperate pirates trying to board that thing.

    Star G for me. Very good points made about the standard starfarer being a better choice for profit. However, I know I will probably be spending a lot of time in lower security areas where I am likely to run into pirates. I would rather be able to get a smaller amount of cargo to the dangerous destination than get none of the larger amount of cargo through because I had to hand it over to pirates. I just can't turn down the the larger teeth and thicker shell of the star g. The lti means that I can take more risks for bigger profits and with 7 crew members to help defend against boarding it should make pirates think twice about boarding. I will probably use this for really long range exploring as well. I can just blast off and scoop fuel wherever I go. I can just go where the solar winds blow me.

    I wasn't particularly surprised by the Star G receiving LTI, as under the new system concept ships are offered with it (i.e. LTI for concept sales, 24 mo. insurance for Hangar/Flight-ready sales). In fact, what DID surprise me was that the base Starfarer did not have it, as both are still pretty much concept, with only the exterior white-boxing complete.

  • @Mobius_Pizza

    @Mobius_Pizza

    LemmingOfEvil That's because the base starfarer was offered before with LTI with small text saying LTI was limited time only, and CIG didn't want to go back on that promise.

    You can't know which ship is more efficient until we know if the more powerful engines give a fast enough speed boost to compensate for the smaller cargo hold. If the Gemini could do three deliveries while the Starfarer only does two then the Gemini would pull ahead over time. Also, I'd imagine the fuel tanks in back aren't affected by ship version only the main cargo hold inside the ship.

    It's been said a few times that certain jobs will be very specialized (main example at the moment being mining) and that doing things wrong can cause problems. Well, it will be interesting to see if mixing the fuel tanks wrongly or over pressurization will do some proper damage to any careless operator aboard a Starfarer. Come on explosive decompression! LTI is a nice peace of mind thing, but a lot of the community that's complaining about it are the ones that have LTI already and *need* that badge of "I was first, all other things are secondary".

    Upping the crew from 2 to 7 is huge. You could have started out with a starfarer, went out to find some fuel to scoop and refine and start earning UEC. Now you have to pay 6 people to help you. The profit margins on this ship went to hell real fast. And the Gemini also loses 1/3 of it's capacity for the extra armor... o_O

    zeus anoxia Well you will be able to run the ship with a crew of 1-3 we don't really know yet how many you need. You don't need to man everything all at once, you only need people in guns if there is a threat and you could relocate them to manage fuel scooping when you need to.

    I wonder how much volume fuel is gonna need. I remember beeing said, that a fully loaded Starfarer can refuel about twelve Hornets or something like that. If I'm looking at the big pods on The Starfarer, every pilot of a smaller ship must be drowning in fuel. Has it ever been stated where and how fuel will be stored in the ships? I mean if fuel is a physical thing that can be collected, than it must be stored somewhere. So either the ships need special/hidden fuel compartments, or the Starfarer will be possible to refuel much more Hornets than we thought....

    BoredGamer You spoke the truth, just take real life examples when explaining this to the others. It takes ~300 crew to operate a destroyer in the past, that is 1/3 on-duty, 1/3 standby and 1/3 off-duty. but actually the ship only need a mechanic and a around 10 people to manage/ add fuel, and around 5 people at the bridge to sail, and the ship itself can hold as much as 1500 people. So go tell them this and end with "the crew number is just for your reference, it's bullshit".

    I read somewhere that capital-class ship, or atleast ships over a certain size, will persist in the game-world regardless of whether the owner is logged on or not. Thus it can be captured or destroyed while crewless. I'm wondering if this is the case with the Starfarer?

  • @lebouffi38

    @lebouffi38

    Emil Amundsen Hello sir, my guess is (and I'm pretty assured about this point) that the Starfarer is not a capital ship as it measures only 90m long. If you check other space sims or space operas, capital ships are most of the time, real flying cities with hundreds of men onboard. The Hull-E being an exception as it doesn't require such a ridicule amount of person to control it; but it is a capital ship through its size. My opinion is that you can determine as if a ship is a capital or not by judging its mass/size and/or the number of person required to fly it ;)

  • @lebouffi38

    @lebouffi38

    Emil Amundsen In EvE online for exemple, the Carrier class ship Thanatos from the Gallente civilization is a good exemple. In Star Wars, one of the Empire's Star Destroyers is another good exemple. Often, smaller ships will be landing on/inside capital ships. Hope I answered your question xD . For the first part of your comment, I'll speak about EvE again : in that game, when capital ship pilots logged off, they had to logg off inside of a POS (Player Owned Station) : the POS was an orbiting tower generating a giant forcefield around it so no shots or ennemy ships could pass through it. The Capital ship was then parked there, inside the Forcefield, in a relative safeness, knowing that POS's could be destroyed by a huge amount of fire power (organized ennemy fleet, other capital ships, etc). In Star Citizen, if what you say is true, I guess your capital ship will be that huge, that you'll have to park it somewhere, wether it would be a giant designated hangar on the surface of a planet, or in a deep deep space location that would be really hard to spot... I don't know really, but there was my thought
