STARCROSS and its FERRY to EXMOUTH | Devon | April 2024

Starcross is easily accessible by train from London and many other main line railways stations. From the railway station you can walk into the nice waterside village of Starcross, famed for Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Atmospheric Railway, enjoy some local food in one of the local pubs, like I did, or you can catch a ferry over to the lovely beach town of Exmouth which sits on the other side of the estuary.
From Starcross there are also some lovely walks to to places like Dawlish Warren or Powderham Castle.
In this video we will take a look around Starcross and learn a little bit about the Atmospheric Railway and then we will catch the ferry over to Exmouth and I will show you the boat and a few snippets from the short trip ( it takes about 15 minutes to cross).
I did not mention fares in the video, because they will change and all the information can be found on the Starcross - Exmouth Ferry facebook page.
This was filmed on a bit of a grey day at the beginning of the season in April, but just imagine how it will be with blue sky and sunshine!
Please note that the Ferry is CASH only.
I paid £8 return in April 2024.
I think one way was £5.

Hi Louise, I'm glad to say, I've managed to find your Starcross to Exmouth video on You Tube, I must have been trying to locate it on Facebook earlier, without success, I've just watched your excellent video, and once again you've made my day, because although me and my wife didn't do the boat trip you were on, we did quite a number of the Stuart Line cruises, on the large boat #The Pride of Exmouth#, and our favourite one was a sail from Exmouth to Sidmouth, and return, which was a beautiful 2.5 hour sail, also from your boat, I could make out the hotels me and Heather stayed at on the promenade at Exmouth, and your video also covered the marina area, which was also a favourite of ours, thank you for helping me to recall so many happy memories with my late wife, and am glad you still remember seeing me at the steam train gala about three weeks ago, which has still got me buzzing! Keep up the good work, Louise, as you must give older people like me, who can't get out to do the driving and walking any more, lots of pleasure keep up the good work, martin😊

So pleased that you found it Martin and that you enjoyed it! That’s lovely that you saw places in it that reignited memories of special times. Those hotels look lovely on the seafront. I picked up a timetable for the Stuart Line cruises from their booking office in the marina. I definitely hope to go on one or two this year. The one you mention sounds really good! Wat h out for a video as soon as I get an opportunity ⛴️

I knew about the Atmospheric railway, but not the little ferry which crosses to Exmouth. Nice video, Louise. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you! Yes, those chips were very good! I had walked there from Dawlish Warren that day, so was ready for them! It was a very cold February day when I filmed that with ice still on the pavements, but a lovely blue sky! I agree, the views from the ferry were stunning. Really looking forward to doing this trip again one day. Have a good Sunday 🤗

Fabulous Louise. We keep saying we are going to head to Exmouth again as when we visited it was very bad weather. This addition of the ferry seems like a good idea. Thanks for sharing with us. 👍🏻🚶🏻‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Enjoyed seeing Exmouth again, I worked in a hotel there back in the 80's but never went to Starcross so nice to see it. Can't remember the marina area (probably hadn't been built) 😂 . Lovely dogs on the boat. 😊

Always wanted to do this ferry ride Louise! So good to see you have done it on your channel. Definitely the best way to arrive in Exmouth. The Exe Estuary is such a beautiful river with a lot of nature and wildlife. I thought you had a new companion to join you on your walks and explores there for a moment! Ah, the ship's dog he keeps the passengers for the ferry company. Another really lovely video Louise. Really enjoyed this! Thank you. Take care, Paul

Thank you Paul!! Haha! I should adopt a dog to take with me on my walks and explorations … or borrow one! These two were lovely and seemed to do a great job of greeting passengers 🤗 It really is a very nice way to arrive in Exmouth. I really enjoy a boat ride and I have discovered some lovely ones in the South West since starting my channel. Loads more to try too! ⛴️

That's really interesting about the atmospheric railway - there's an example of one in the SS Great Britain's Being Brunel exhibition. I think I've only ever been to Exmouth once before but don't really remember much about it. The ferry looked fun, I imagine on a winy day it would blow away the cobwebs! 🤣 Those chips sounded really crispy too. Yum.

Haha! Yes! The chips were really crispy! I would love to see that example. Brunel is such a fascinating character and inventor. I am looking forward to returning to Exmouth on a bright sunny day again soon.
