This old steam railway is more important than you think

Ойын-сауық

If you are a millennial, the chances are that Thomas The Tank Engine had a huge impact on your childhood. Steam engines are simply as cool as it gets, and Mike Fernie gets behind the controls of a beautiful engine on the oldest running heritage railway in the world, The Talyllyn. The question is, are trains becoming less cool to kids these days?
A massive thank you to the volunteers at Talyllyn for having us, check out their awesome little railway here: www.talyllyn.co.uk/

I adore this railway, such a beautiful place to visit, I’ve been visiting for 39 years and will continue to do so, I love the railway, I’d of thought there’d of been a mention to the fact that Rev W.Awdry who wrote the original Thomas books used to run the railway. Another beautiful railway local to this is the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland railway, equally as beautiful

I completely agree with Mike's analysis on kids' TV. I was obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine as a kid and as such I have an interest in steam engines. Kids nowadays do not have the same outlets or influences. Its a real shame

True history in motion. Steam was Britain's gift to the world. We lit the fires of industry and began a revolution. To this day incredibly dedicated and talented people give up their time as volunteers to keep that flame alive over 300 years later. I wish I could buy a pint for every single one of you. Having operated a steam engine, the thing people don't realize is just how delicate the throttle truly is. There is a fine line between "we got it moving" and "we spun the drivers" which is BAD. That said, once you get a feel for it, the engine legitimately talks to you. You learn how to listen to what it is telling you and how to react. Also, due to the extremely low rolling resistance of the rails, you only need a light touch to get going and on flat ground, it will coast for a long distance. Mike did an incredible job operating, he really has a knack for operating the engine and did an incredible job of presenting too. Proper job all around!

Well, it finally happened, another crossover we never knew we wanted: "It's the countryside that really gets me fired up" later that day.. "James your train's on fire" "Is it!" looks back "Oh PAH! " "Well, there you are" Would love to see Hammond and/or May visiting the different railways. imagine Hammond on a gravity train!! "Trucks and broken slate lay everywhere. luckily no one was hurt - except Hammond, who laid bruised and bemused, with only his laughing colleagues for company!"

Here in Colorado we have a narrow gauge rail line from Durango to Silverton, every summer as a kid when we went to our land in Durango I would haunt the station and take the train back and forth at least once every summer trip. Once I grew up, I took the Amtrak across country several times over the years and have never tired of it. Something magical and "old timey" about being on a train, it's slow enough that you can see the world around you passing by, and the journey becomes an actual part of the trip, unlike with planes or cars. I've met some great people on the trains, it's a different breed of folk who prefer that mode of travel.

I used to work on a heritage railway here in the States called Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad from Autumn 2016 to Winter 2017. Had a lot of fun. We had three steam engines, one of which was behind glass while waiting for repairs. Sadly, Mt. Rainier Scenic closed in 2020 until further notice due to financial losses caused by the pandemic. The last train ran on Christmas Day 2019.
