Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings is here today to show you how she prepares her fabrics before you start stitching. You must use spray starch to keep your fabrics from stretching.Saturate it completely then hang it to dry. Once fully dry, then you can press it with your iron. What a super helpful tip, everyone should go out and stock up on starch!

This makes me want to go starch/restarch everything in my studio!!!!! Thanks for the video-I love watching you girls-I bet you have a blast making these.
I appreciate the helpful video! Am at the start of learning about quilting and didn't want my fabric shrink unpredictably after I sew everything together. This preshrinking step is a common thing with teextiles, it's not inert like paper.
Thanks a lot for the tip, It works, is great!
I followed the instructions precisely and my beautiful Mackinaw Island layer cake and every piece shrunk.
Never starch after cutting! It WILL SHRINK quite a bit! Always before cutting fabric!
Do you starch batiks the same?
I want starched fabric but I'm worried about shrinkage. Also, what if you don't want to wait for those to dry, or don't have a place to hang those? Is there an option for spray and iron right away?

Hello Casual Crafter! I don't recommend it, the starch liquid might crust onto your iron.
Do you have a preference on starch brand? Do you do the same with large yardage pieces?

Vickie Graveline We prefer using Faultless Spray Starch which you can find at your grocery store or Walmart. We like to also spray starch our large yardage pieces but not quite to the extent that Lisa Bongean does. Thanks for your question!
Saturated with starch and piled together to dry like that, dye will run.
How can they breathe with all those chemicals?

Can't do it....so hard on the lungs and the earth!!!
So it pre-shrinks the fabric? May you explain why preshrunk fabric is important prior to sewing ? New quilter here.❤

Hello Xris! Starching helps prevent fabric from fraying as much and it's easier to make more accurate cuts with starched fabric.
I would like also like to know if you wash the starch out of your quilts when you're finished. I know starch can attract creepy crawlies.

Linda Cejnar It depends on the quilt. Some we don't use and just hang up on the walls and if we do use the quilts we certainly wash them. We have never had issues with bugs although we have heard from several people saying they also had issues with bugs. We use Faultless spray starch and we haven't had any issues. Thanks for your question!

You can get the iron on Amazon. :)
Could Best Press spray work as well? Do you also use the starch for the backing??? That'd take a whole can lol!

Jessica Flores Certainly, Best Press is great too. We just prefer Faultless. You can certainly starch the backing. I don't find its needed however.
No thanks.. too much trouble. I do fine with the sizing in unwashed fabric.
Followed your advice and completely ruined an expensive layer cake. It went from a 10 inch square to a little less than 9 1/2 inches and completely warped. I learned the hard (and expensive) way. No thanks!

+hbmoore121 Thanks for watching our video. We love this technique because it essentially preshrinks your fabrics. Please contact us at kimberly@fatquartershop.com if you would like any further clarification or assistance in this matter.
