The Banterlope YES! MYSTERY! Just shared the originals with a 50-year old friend who had not seen any of them. No need for her to see the prequels. Star Wars Mania in the 80s was a result of the mystery of 'What are the Clone Wars?', 'Who is Jabba?', 'Who is this badass Boba Fett?!'. Seeing Jabba's fat disgusting head for the 1st time was exciting. No other films invoked so much excitement as the original trilogy. The prequels were anti-climactic, boring and a letdown. Darth Vader is just a lovesick brat manipulated by the Emporer, the Clone Wars was just nameless clones fighting droids, Jar Jar Binks is ridiculous, etc.

***** definately. i often think that the phantom menace would have been better if the other gungan tagged along with obi wan and Qui gon booze but that's just my opinion. you know, the one that confronts Jar Jar when they go into the under water city. if the clones were actual people in armour and not just a bunch of i dentical clones who could be replaced at will, seeing them gunned down in droves would be more engaging. Mr Plinkett's ROTS review states that the clones could have been an army of clones of some grotesque creature. the OT never makes mention of the storm troopers being clones any way. I agree, Vader should have been a skilled warrior, not a Gymnast with daddy issues. it now puzzles me why Jabba went out in public to the pod race. i assumed that he was some kind of mob boss who was held up in his desert fortress so nobody could get to him. boba's origin story was pointless.

"Mystery" Yeah... when I did my fan-edit of Phantom, I removed Sidious ENTIRELY from the film. It detracts very little to the one-dimensional Darth Maul, and the whole "Which was destroyed? The Master or the apprentice" line is now much more interesting. I know the comment is a bit off topic, but I felt it fits the mystery topic at hand.

ForeverTheSickestGamer Revealing the main bad guy so early makes things so boring. We all know who the bad guy is, and it's very easy to make the link between Sidious and Palpatine. By removing the Sidious character, "There's no logic in the federation's play" is also stronger. You see Darth Maul, but you are never sure of who's behind it all. It seems to be the Federation, but why? It opens up so much mystery for Clones, without complicating the story for no reason.

  • @sean668

TS Prism I like that. The idea of not knowing who the "master" is adds some more depth to the movie (which was pretty one-dimensional otherwise). Did you edit out the midichlorian part too?

  • @TrapnestShinigami

    @TrapnestShinigami

Sean Brass Yeah. I never really was bothered by them so much, but if I ever put it online, probably via The Cantina forum form the Star Wars 7 News blog site, I know that's something expected from edits, since it follows closer the philosophical original idea of the Force in the original films, and since I feel the prequels should follow the originals and not viceversa, midichlorians don't really have a place.

As I said in my "Phantom Menace" review, every important thing you need to know about the backstory of Star Wars is revealed throughout the original trilogy. We know all the interesting stuff there is to know about what came before in those 3 films and the order of those information dumps was a vital aspect of making that current story more exciting, surprising and emotionally resonant. The reason a majority of those prequels just comes off as tedious filler is because that's all they were ever going to be. The only reason folks thought they wanted 3 films about backstory in the first place was because of the space-opera inspired episode titles originally ONLY done for aesthetic purposes. It doesn't matter HOW Darth Vader turned to the Dark Side, what matters is that he DID and that it's possible for Luke. It doesn't matter HOW the war started, what matters is that it exists and that our characters need to survive and win it.

  • @SamsChanneI

You're comparing actual events that happened in the real world with a fictional narrative that did not surround the cause of the war. Knowing how it started wouldn't have helped them win any more than *not* knowing.

Sams ChanneI In my personal opinion, I feel that the more we know about a character's backstory, the more we can understand what makes them who they are, or why they do the things that they do. With the prequels, I feel they made Darth Vader somewhat similar to a Shakesperean tragedy. The tragedies that Shakespeare often write revolve around the downfall of the protagonist from glory, and experience torment either directly or indirectly before the ultimate climax, which was to take their own life. I felt that the prequels gave Vader a similar approach as he was once a young slave who aspired to be a great jedi, as he wanted a life better than what he had on Tatooine. He was also the chosen one of a prophecy that foretold that he would destroy the Sith and bring balance to the force. However, he was unprepared with the hardships that the Jedi life brought him, and as a result, was fully unable to embrace their ways. This is why Anakin was arrogant with his skills as a Jedi, and why he was unable to let go of the love he held for his mother and Padme. I know that people hate the romance, but to me, I saw it as a ROMEO AND JULIET interpretation as he was a Jedi while she was a senator, and the Jedi conduct mandated that he could not marry. It didn't mean that Jedi were emotionless robots that couldn't feel love, as they were encouraged to love unconditionally, but it was attachment or possession that was forbidden (Anakin specifically stated this in AOTC). The reason Jedi can't have attachments is because if they were to lose the person they loved, their love would be transformed into anger and hatred, which are aspects of the Dark Side. Because of this, like Romeo and Juliet, their love ended in tragedy. I actually thought it was a clever idea that the reason Anakin turned to the dark side was because he wanted to gain power to protect the one he loved. I honestly did not see that coming and felt it was much more creative than what I originally thought was going to happen (as a kid I thought the Emperor would zap him with enough Sith lighting and that would somehow turn him evil; stupid I know, but hey, I was in second grade when I thought that). That's just how I feel about Darth Vader's history, and I'm glad to have seen it as I felt it made his conflict all the more compelling. You don't have to agree with my opinion on it, but I just wanted to share a different perspective on the matter, that's all... Also love your reviews! Huge comic book fan and I write my own reviews on Amazon.com, mostly on comic books though... www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A2UEEAFTSTBVOT?ie=UTF8&ref_=cm_cr_pr_pdp

A strange but interesting order I read about was (4,1,2,5,3,6.) His logic was (4) See the film that started it all.) (1) See the Republic in its glory. (2) See the war starting. (5) See the war in full force and get the big twist about Darth Vader. (3) Go back and see how the twist developed. And (6) Finish the story.

Well we can't speak for Solo, but as of now the highest priority for any new Star Wars viewer is to watch 4, 5, then 6. After that, watch whatever you want. The prequels suck, so have fun with those. Afterward, I guess Rogue One and Han Solo would fit well before 7, 8, and 9. Or you can just ignore everything, watch 4, 5, and 6, then move on to Doctor Who.

Man, the issue is that children can't comprehend good movies like 4-6. They can like the prequels though because it has a bunch of lightsabers. If you wait until the can understand it, say, twelve or thirteen, by then the secret of Darth Vader being Luke's father is certainly spoiled. You can't protect your child from the infamous reveal. So, I'd show them the OT, but I wouldn't expect them to love it as much as the PT. Well, I guess by the time I have children the new trilogy will be out too, so it'll be scrambled again.

+Kakashi Hatake I don't quite get that point. I'm an adult with a pretty solid attention span and the Prequels are boring as shit. Like they are actually impossible to sit through without glazing over in ten minutes. I honestly can't wrap my head around the idea that millions of kids the world over have sat and watched those films without the taxation of trade routes and shitty political intrigue (if you can even call it intrigue) utterly boring them senseless. Compare that to the OT where you have a CLEAR story with a CLEAR spirit of adventure and CLEARLY defined heroes fighting CLEARLY defined baddies and what kids aren't going to like them cause... what? They were made in the 80s? Give kids more credit than that. A LOT of kids love BTTF, Indiana Jones, OT Star Wars, Ghostbusters etc. It's up to parents to expose it to them and share their enthusiasm. Kids pick up on how much you like something and if they respect your opinion then they'll be open to it.

Where do your parents fit into this in terms of showing you films? When did your opinion shift? How were you not bored shitless by them as a kid? I mean ATOC you sat through that? JackFlash85 This is where the magic of Star Wars plays in, everybody subconciously loves it. My father showed me the OT when I was young, I think five. Then one day he shows me the prequels, which, funnily enough, I screamed I didn't want to see because there was no Darth Vader. After watching the movies, I couldn't comprehend why I liked them, I just did. I loved Revenge of the Sith because it had the coolest effects and flips and stuff. And Darth Maul's double saber? Coolest shit ever, right? I realized I was wrong when I grew to the age of eleven, and I could begin to comprehend what a good story was. I liked the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones because again, it seemed to have better effects than the OT. I don't know why I wasn't bored shitless watching them, but whatever. Perhaps others prefered the OT when they were my age.

Just a fucking dumb idea that anyone else in the director's chair would have thrown out at first suggestion. I never got the whole, "What order should I watch the Star Wars movies in?" debate. Everyone knows that the only way to get the full experience is to watch... 1. "Rouge One" as soon a sit comes out. (It takes place before "A New Hope" after all.) 2. "A New Hope" (original cut obviously.) 3. "Attack of the Clones" (so that you will know the backstory of Boba Fett.) 4. The cartoon portion of "The Star Wars Christmas Special". (Again, so the viewers get to know Fett a little more.) 5. "Empire Strikes Back" up to the part where Vader says he is Luke's father. 6. "Revenge of the Sith" (So the audience can see first hand that Vader is in fact, Luke's father.) 7. The Live action portions of "The Star Wars Holiday Special". (After episode 3 the audience will undoubtedly want to hear more wookie roars.) 8. The remainder of "Empire Strikes Back". 9. "Ewoks: The Battle for Endor" (So the audience is introduced to the Ewoks.) 10. Read "The Thrawn Trilogy". (Obviously because they are awesome books.) 11. The "Clone Wars" Movie (Because it is clearly the best out of all of these.) 12. The "Star Wars Rebels" TV show (but only episodes 3, 7, and 21.) 13. "The Force Awakens" (Because it's made by JJ Abrams.) 14. "Return of the Jedi" and finally. 15. "The Phantom Menace" (Just so the audience gets some closure.) oh, and then play "Knights of the Old Republic".

+Gaming Winner I like Machete Order because of the Parallels between Luke and Anakin's path. You see how they both came a surpressive life on Tatooine, how very little patience they had, how they struggled with inter-conflict, and how they ultimately had to choose, light or dark. When one is finished watching ESB, one has these questions: Is Vader really Luke's father? What will happen to Luke now? The Alliance? As ESB was a dark film, the Alliance itself could be seen as weakening. Taking a step back and flashing back to the old republic days and seeing the upbringing of Anakin Skywalker (and ultimately, Darth Vader) allows for those questions to be intensified, and allows the new viewer to see the similar paths of Luke and Anakin. Anakin was worried about the one's he loved (Padme, Shmi, ect) and allowed his emotions to get the best of him. Luke was the same way. Anakin's experience was more tragic (Mother dying in his arms) and we can sympathize with him that, yea, I might go ballistic on the murderers of my mother. Yes, the prequels are flawed. Especially episode II. But when utilized correctly, they can enhance the story of Luke and Anakin Skywalker.

There was someone who showed Star Wars to his wife for the first time, and he used Machete Order. When Hayden Christensen reappeared at the end of Return of the Jedi, she smiled. Machete Order was thought up so that one single shot wouldn't be confusing, but tolerable. Machete Order not only made that shot tolerable, but it made it a good experience for a first time viewer.

My biggest issue with The Clone Wars was the little kiddy humor that took me out of the show. The annoying droids being stupid and clumsy just to force giggles out of 5 year olds got old quick. However when the show focused more on the actual war, the Mandalorians, Darth Maul, Sith/Jedi training, then I really enjoyed it...

Night Clone I get what you're saying, and _kind of_ agree. Except sometimes the mystery _is_ important, such as in Treasure Island, where even at the end we never know what Long John thought of Jim: was there genuine respect there, or did Long John simply view him as a useful idiot? This was intentionally left unresolved. However, there are no such mysteries in Star Wars that I can think of. Oh, there are unanswered questions, to be sure, but I can't think of any which wasn't trivial. On the viewing order, however, I absolutely agree with the question-answer order of things. Because without the prequels (which in my mind do not exist), there are indeed important questions not answered. And the reason to watch the "question" first is that the prequels were made to complement the original trilogy: the original trilogy, on the other hand, was not made as a continuation of the prequels. The reason I do not acknowledge the prequels, by the way, is because they simply do not cut it as a fleshing out of the back-story of the original trilogy. It is not entirely consistent with the original trilogy, which is another reason to watch the original first: if you watch the prequels first, you might get the impression that it is episodes IV-VI which are inconsistent with the prequels, and that's just crazy-talk. When it comes to the technology displayed in the series, as well as fight sequences, doing the originals last might be somewhat anti-climactic if you're into fancy, bouncy moves.

Rogue One connects the OT and the PT together so I think it would be fitting to watch Rogue One after viewing all the other ones, imo. So it would be 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, Rogue One. Especially considering RO pays homage to both trilogies. RO would be the cherry on top after viewing them all if you think about it. And it transitions perfectly into Episode IV, so you can restart the whole marathon after that! You literally end where ANH picks up, so I think this order makes the most sense.

I say this. When showing someone the movies for the first time, watch them in release order. Try to burn the Despecialized Edition on to a disc. When you've already seen the movie and you're gonna watch the saga again, watch them in Episodic Order. It doesn't spoil anything since you already know what happens and I've noticed it makes watching Return Of The Jedi better. It feels more emotional at the end since it's kinda like it's the last time you'll ever see Star Wars (even though it's obviously not).

Nice reasoning. Although I personally wouldn't show the prequels to anyone. A child can grow up and decide that shit for themselves just the same way I wouldn't shove religion or political opinions down a kids throat either. Yep, these films are just that important. If they want to see them for themselves then fine. I have no problem with it, but there's a reason the OT works and the 6 film saga doesn't. That's not just opinion. Anyone who has any cinematographic background knows this. In this case, the questions the OT poses just don't need answers beyond subtle hints - and that's one thing the prequels ain't.

After that first viewing in that order you can do whatever you want. Keep watching them in that order or see them from 1-6, which i often do these days. But I grew up with the mystery & wouldn't give it away for the world. It's OK now seeing them in episodic order because i know them all by heart. But for the first time, don't spoil it. I grew up watching 1-6 on tv and I knew everything that had happened before 4. But every downside has an upside. Because the feeling was so much more different. To me it was like I went back to my hometown from when I was a kid and saw everything changed. I mean the shear difference in atmosphere (republic becomes empire, love becomes hate, fear has become suffering, the kneeling down of Darth Vader for the Emperor, Obi Wan's words, Leia and Luke's first scenes) everything had a completely different and new meaning to it. I'd not have it any other way! Another argument for me was how it made me mature. The prequels inticed me with their fighting scenes and good people in power. But the sequels lacked those and replaced them with wisdom and hopeful deep meaningful quotes that would put a person through the dark times patient for better times.

Episode 1 is one of the most pivotal parts of the saga. It shows qui gons death which is the spark to Anakin's turn to the dark side. He's also the one who deems him the chosen one

I don't know if this is true but I've heard that Lucas had a sort of a plot for six movies before the release of A new Hope. But Lucas wasn't able to make episode I-III because he thought that these movies requiered more advanced technology to be able to make them the way he wanted. So if epiaode I was released first: in which order is the best way to watch them?

my viewing order includes all of the original Marvel Comics from the 70s and 80s in between and after the OT . simply because the comic was my Star Wars fix between movies back then . So much new content out there now it is amazing ! I remember a time between 1986 and 1991 where the saga was mostly dormant and all you could find was a roleplaying game and a few source books . So many people bitching about this or that aspect of Star Wars ....There is something out there for every one , if you don't like one facet , choose another . That said , the Q & A order is how I would show a new viewer the saga . I do find the Machete order to be an interesting experiment however , especially when using a 3 in one fan edit .

I used to think it was chronological order I-VI. But now I think the IV-VI then I-III is better due to the mystery of Jabba the Hut and Darth Vader's origin. Thank you for shedding light on this dark side, HelloGreedo.

But when you already know the movies and you want to do a "marathon", watching I II III IV V VI adds something awesome: the build up. From the very begining we're told about the end of the sith, and when you see that coming at the end of Jedi, when you see that celebration scene at the Ewok's, you know that the light side efforts were not vain, that the galaxy is free (I'm excluding the EU, talking about the movies only), and that feeling always bring a tear to my cheek, because I remember what our heoes from episode I to VI have gone through and I say to myself what a wonderful saga! Plus when you already know the movies, you don't have to see the original trilogy just before the prequels to feel and remember (I could watch Revenge of the sith right now and still have goosebumps when seeing Vader's rise).

  • @tolfreep
    @tolfreep8 жыл бұрын

I understand your view and I respect it as you said the Original Trilogy gives you questions that the Prequel Trilogy answers however I never found that. Myfirst experience of Star Wars was when I was five years old and I watched a VHS recorded version of Return of the Jedi. To my parents there was no burning question which film I watched first, they put Return of the Jedi on because it was a great film and they knew their 5 year old would love it and I did. I followed up not long after with The Empire Strikes back and much much later with Star Wars. So I never experienced the mystery just the quality. however having a child of my own as made me appreciate the loss of the mystery that I could have got. It's not just the mystery of who Vader is it's who Leia is and to extent who Palpatine is. Now while I agree watching them in Episodic order doesn't make sense for first time viewers watching 1,2,4,5,3 and finally 6 works really well you follow the narrative all the way through to 5 getting the reveal that Vader is not a man who killed Luke's father but is his father also it keeps the reveal of Leia being Luke's sister right until the second to last film. this is in a way similar to the machete order but only gives you one flashback film in ep 3. Also it gives you a glance at the clone wars before moving to ep 4 and having Ben mention them. Now I'm not saying my way is the right way as you said viewing order is any person personal choice I just know that I want my kids to watch first time (and first time only) in this order so they can get the mystery that I didn't experience with it. Love your channel man and sorry for the long text :).

+HelloGreedo What order should we watch the movies with Rogue Included?

  • @tylerisawolf2286

I agree with you. Some people say 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and then 6, but just because it is the numerical order, doesn't mean you need to watch it that way. The prequels and the original trilogy aren't the same story. They follow parts of the same universe with some characters following over, but as you mentioned, the original trilogy is the question and the prequels are the answer. Episodes 4-6 are a finished story. Sure it leaves you with questions, but those can be theorised on. The prequels answered those questions, which is good. The original trilogy could exist on its own. Watching 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and then 6 spoils many plot twists. Great video!

In my college years when all episodes were released I decided to watch them in the order of release and yes these questions came to my mind As who are those strormtrooper What is the force etc And prequels did answer my questions but I was surprised when I rewatch those movies through digital or blu Ray and I am kinda confused by the changes are being made to this franchise from time to time

I've been lucky enough to grow up in a family where the original trilogy is sacred. Before I watched Star Wars for the first time all they'd ever talk about regarding the movies was the original trilogy, never the prequels. Of course, I watched the originals before the prequels. I fell in love

All very valid points. But, here's one thing I would like to point out, because I've watched them in various orders. The order you're watching them in CHANGES the story you're being told. For example, starting with the originals; the story you get is about a group of underdogs taking on the Empire. But if you watch them chronologically, the entire saga becomes Anakin's story.
