Except when Maul faced Sidious, he was begging *for* death. He knew that it would be far worse for sidious to take him alive. Having said that, had Maul been in Vizsla's position, he definitely wouldn't have accepted the challenge.

Well, Maul was holding back, one Force Choke and he could win. Vizla didn't have specialized Jedi hunting gear like Cad Bane, notice he only used The Force to summon his lightsaber to deliver the coup de grace. After being given a large handicap and still losing, begging for mercy would probably shame the Vizla clan greatly. He also honored the Mandalorian tradition of meritocracry regardless of one's origin, a big part of their cultural identity. Technically speaking, the ones who didn't acknowledge him betrayed the Mandalorian spirit.

Vizla did well but this was clearly a display by Maul. Had he used the force to win the Mandalorians wouldn't have followed him. So he beat Vizla like a warrior.

Vizsla's final scene cemented him as one of the most underrated characters in all of Star Wars. He could've backed out of the challenge and just ordered his troops to fire but instead his code forced him into it. Not only that, but I think he knew he didn't stand a goddamn chance against a fully trained Sith assassin but still faced Maul head on and accepted death like a true warrior.

@@arnoldgreen4278 Actually from my understanding is if you fight AGAINST the Dark Saber and try to control it is when you can fail. Learning to meld with it and let IT fight using you is what makes it so powerful for a non-force wielder. And Vizsla definitely trained for this. Notice how he failed when he didn't use the Dark Saber to attack and decided to melee a Sith.

You know Maul was actually very honorable to his opponent. He could’ve used the force to his advantage but he he didn’t, to prove that his skills alone is enough for him to win. Despite his opponent using his arsenal of weapons. And in the end his opponent even accepts his fate knowing that Maul would be a powerful ruler for Mandalor

He has a few fights like this in Maul: Lockdown (set before The Phantom Menace) where he has to keep his Force powers minimal so as not to be exposed as a Force user, and they go down pretty similarly to this which is cool as hell.

I had the same thought rewatching this. I was like "why didn't maul just force crush him" but realized the same thing: he tried to keep it as fair as possible, he has the ability to use the force, which augments his fighting, but he didn't outright use it. Both men fought with honor. Such a good scene

It’s not an honor thing. Maul isn’t honorable. Honor isn’t in the Sith code. The only reason he doesn’t use the force is because he knows that if he does, the Mandalorians watching the fight wouldn’t consider it a legitimate victory. They wouldn’t consider him truly a better warrior than Vizsla. In order to gain the support of the people, he needed to not use the force.

Maul still has his connection to the force and was likely using it to sense moves ahead of time that no one can really detect so.. good call, I agree.

I don't know why, but seeing Pre Vizla use the Darksaber is just so satisfying to watch. You don't really see non-force wielders using a lightsaber that often, and it's interesting to see how someone without formal training uses one. In Vizla's case, he's very much all or nothing- his swings are wide and heavy, almost always being killing blows, but he has little to no defense of his own. Whenever Maul went on the offensive, he'd quickly get overwhelmed.

Maul knew Vizsla was arrogant and he used his pride to challenge him to an unwinnable battle. Vizsla put up a good fight, but he was not going to last against a hardened Sith.

Vizsla had no choice but to accept when Maul challenged him as he was bound by Mandalorian code. If he declined, it would have been a serious issue so it wasn't arrogance that brought about the fight. Vizsla was fully aware of how serious his predicament was from the beginning and fought accordingly.

3:08 since Pre Vizla is now dead, do we now call him Post Vizla?

I just realized, “only the strongest shall rule” resonates with the Sith “rule of the strong” philosophy. No wonder they threw together nicely with the Sith Empire back in the Old Republic.

Where do I even begin? Maul’s powerful entrance and declaration, the gorgeous art and movement, and especially the use of a full Mandalorian arsenal to give a seasoned Sith a run for his money. This scene was phenomenal, and I respect Vizla for sticking to his principles, even in defeat.

I love how the fight evolves and shows Mauls strength, his ability to learn quickly and the Mandolorians creativity and mastery of different weapons Vizla had the upper hand at first but after he showed and played all his cards (flamethrower, jetpack, bombs, guns, wire, those little blades...), it became clear Maul is the better fighter and not just because of his lightsaber training

If you watch closely at 0:24, Vizsla is seriously not happy about the challenge. He has a good idea of how dangerous Maul really is, but know that his code is being used effectively against him. He was willing to use all possible advantages to survive and keep his rule, but his army was negated when he was challenged to fight his opponent personally. If he had refused the challenge, what happened next would be unpredictable and even if he survived his character and leadership would be in question. He recovers more quickly than any of his subordinates can look at him, and gives the order to arm his opponent. He does his formidable best, which has the effect of demonstrating to all of his peers how effective Maul is at defending against their arsenal even when he restricts himself to only physical means of doing them harm. Really, Vizsla had lost as soon as Maul set foot in the room.

The way Maul growled as his saber ignited has to be one of the coolest and scariest thing, I have heard

Seeing the mandalorian use the dark saber in combat in BOBF, and then seeing vizla use it in combat shows just how skilled he was of a fighter and the dedication he had to train and use it. amazing details throughout all these years.

The short twitch when her bfs head went solo did it for me. There she briefly went from sarcastic badass to being actually concerned and even frightened for once. Such details make the show great

I think what really made me realize just how wild and powerful Maul is, is that for most of this series save for I think just season 7, he doesn't even have his full lightsaber. He gives people like Obi-Wan, Pre Vizsla, and others either a run for their money or outright beats them, and he does it all with only half his weapon in a style he's not as proficient in. I like to imagine if he had his full saberstaff he'd have absolutely annihilated Vizsla, just on the sheer fact that he's more comfortable with it, and it's a more unorthodox weapon when it comes to lightsaber combat.

I honestly prefer Darth Maul a hell of a lot more both here and in Rebels then I ever did in the Phantom Menace. There's far more to his character here then in Episode I where his only defining character to quote I Hate Everything: ''Looks like a devil man creature with horns and has a double Lightsaber. That's his entire character. Wow. How interesting.''

I watched this again after years... the fact that Maul didint use or reach into the force in order for the death watch to follow him is so perfect ... i only notice it because of a comment but once you realize it, its so evident... the amount o care the show creators (mainly Filoni i guess) put in this show is what allow them to respect and enrich the lore, even creating new aspects.

Clone Wars really succeeded because Lucas was more open to expanding the lore of the prequels with a team that he could bounce ideas back and forth with, which really helped. I have to suggest Maul: Lockdown as a book to read or listen to as an audiobook if you like how Maul did things here. Lockdown is pretty much Maul using his wits 90% of the time and avoiding the use of the Force, which is great.

Judiging by this series, Pre would have kicked Jango's ass. Awesome use of tactics technology and skill mixed with ferocity. Though I should add he was not a great long term planner, and thus his downfall.

If we take legends Jango into account, he killed 6 jedi with nothing but his fists, rocks, and snow. Then beat Tor Vizsla in hand to hand combat. And in ATOC managled to contend with obi-wan in hand to hand for a bit. Takes balls to engage in a fistfight with a Jedi. Jango had obi-wan on the defensive and could have killed him if nto for plot armor. And obi-wan beat maul.

Let's not forget Mandalorians are hard as nails! Famous throughout the galaxy for it. I know Maul was always going to win, but these guys hunt crazy shit for a laugh, they're all war vets and live tough lives. He was also a clan leader too, that makes him double trick. If it weren't for Force users, They'd probably rule the galaxy... if not the Hutts, lol.

Fun fact! The weapon Pre-vizla uses at 1:38 is actually a Lavarok! It was a very ancient weapon created and developed by the Sith during the old days of the Sith Empire, longggg before the time of even some like Revan.

I start this scene cheering for maul and then end it feeling bad for visla Great story telling.

This was one of the most badass fights in the clone wars series, you have to admit

I could watch this fight 100 times and never get tired of it. I could only watch the sequels once and never watch them again. This fight was so badass and epic.

It's been awhile since I've watched this fight and I gotta say, the choreography is amazing! Vizsla being as resourceful as a mandolorian, using his jetpack, blasters, wrist attachments, and even what some would call underhanded techniques to his advantage, but Maul with the overall superior combat prowess, and it shows!

I love when two villains fight (especially in Star Wars). You're not sure who to root for or who you want to win.

I love when Maul growls as he ignites his saber and the sounds synchronize, awesome detail

@@apparentjewel1154 Dude , he used his flamethrowers, grenades, gunshots, the jetpack, etc. Vizla was cheating the whole time, Maul was just using his saber.

@@sorjonen8358 The Mandalorian fighting style is based around the use of multiple weapons and gadgets. It was originally designed to counter Jedi abilities. That being said, Pre Vizsla did manage to incapacitate Maul a couple of times and he always chose to move in with his darksaber when that happened. He never opted to shoot Maul from afar, which he would have done if he didn't insist on fighting honorably. In return, Maul fought honorably too and did not use the Force to attack.

Just came here to double check what happened to Pre Vizsla after seeing the new mandalorian ep because I forgot how/if he died.

This is the ultimate version of Maul we ever got and he is a beast to behold!!

Now seeing how heavy the dark saber is . Gotta respect how pre managed to wield the blade the way he does

Heavy? The actual blade shouldn't really weigh anything, and a handle is easy to manage. The problem is more that training with conventional melee weapons don't prepare you for a weapon with so little weight.

Best part about this whole fight. Is that when it came to it. Maul DID not use his powers of the force or his weapon. He just straight up kicked Pre's ass. As a true warriors.

My favorite thing here is what Kanan said to Sabine came true: "these tricks may help you from time to time but wont keep you alive in the long run". Everything Viszla did, maul had an answer to. Everytime something failed, Viszla tried something new until he had nothing left but his hands and hand to hand against a Zabrak, mandalorian or not and sith or not, is not an easy battle.

*One of Death Watch leaning in to whisper:* "Is this really how we always dealt with things?" *Other Death Watch:* "If it wasn't, this is the way we do things, now."

I freaking love Maul’s fighting style.

Vizsla: It's over, Maul! I have the fly ground! Maul: Don't insult me, nooby amateur. (jumps and kicks Pre down to the ground)

For not being a force user or trained with a saber vizla was pretty good with the saber and fought maul well. Vizla kept his own against maul and when defeated he accepted his defeat.

I love how Bo-Katan uses the same line Maul uses to regain control of her small army.

(After chopping Pre Vizsla's decapitated head) Maul:"This is the Way!" (Every Mandalorian followed saying except Bo-Katan) : "This is the Way!!!"

2:20 Why he didn't shoot multiple times to kill him? I know, I know, because the script said so.

+Black Griffon Just Like Maul doesn't use ANY Force type abilities in this scene until after the fight is pretty much over. They're both warriors.

Blaster shots aren't allowed to hit Force-users.

I love how both of these 2 stayed as warriors the entire fight. Vizsla: Accepted his death in the end, did not cower or beg. Maul: Didn't use the force the entire time, with the exception to his senses and ability to see things before they happen, but Vizsla also got a jet pack so I think its still pretty fair. Vizsla likely knew he would lose to Maul, get still took the challenge.

1:51 I just noticed Vizla blocked with his beskar and not his blade.

Maul just used his saber, fighting skills, no sith powers and won.

This makes me want to watch the clone wars again... truly great show...

2 of the greatest warriors in the galaxy, the mandalorians and the sith battling it out for control of mandalore. Noting how in the past the 2 have worked together but to see maul a Sith Lord fight pre vizla whom is mandalore at this point is amazing.

This is one of the best duels in all the SW canon--showing how a Jedi unencumbered by morality would fight. Maul barely uses the Force either. It would have been appropriate if he had used Exar Kun's sabre staff, but brilliant either way.

Vizsla may be tough...but he's no Force-User.

kadindarklord force users are always using the force it’s not just moving objects without the force Maul wouldn’t have been able to do half the things he did in the fight

Force using doesn't have anything against the prowess of the Mandalorians. Many Jedi and Sith alike fell to the Mandalorians since the time of the Neo-Crusaders. They're the real deal.

that dark saber (pre's weapon) was always the coolest to me, also it was said in the old republic series, that the dark saber when used in battle, could break an opponents weapon with enough force behind the swing

That snarl gets me every single time

People forget mandalorians are (used to be) the premier force user hunters of the galaxy. Most of their gear and weapons are tailor made to fight force users.

Pre Vizla did pretty good against Maul though if Maul had his double sided lightsaber instead I feel like he would’ve won a lot sooner since he’s specialized with it more than just a regular saber.

There was a moment when Vizsla could kill Maul by cutting his arm and cutting his head 1:00 . But that hesitance cost him his life.
